All these pics were taken with a Micro-Nikkor 105mm with VR turned on and the camera in programmed mode. All shots were handheld with natural light (except 1 or 2 with fill flash). VR works great and handheld shots are easy even with the weight of this lens and the camera body.

Unfortunately, even though you can shoot at a slow shutter speed, you can't prevent your subject from moving. With the wind blowing it was hard to get clear shots.

These were the first pics I ever took with this lens. Looking forward to practicing my macro shooting when my daughter isn't bugging me. ;)

That butterfly photo is great! My fav. out of the bunch. Great colors overall in all the photo's! Were all the pics taken locally?

ericthehalfbee 11-08-2008 05:50 AM

^ They were all taken at Butterfly Gardens on the Island. Went over for the day on Thanksgiving weekend with the family.

I'd love to go back there with a tripod and external flashes as there's just so much to shoot. I have lots of shots of butterflies, but as I said, with the slow shutter speeds they often came out blurry.

Boostslut 11-08-2008 04:57 PM

Wow crazy i totally wana go there and check it out! Macro mania!

Boostslut 11-08-2008 05:11 PM

Wow, definately a big fan of macro too! How did you guys take pictures of the bee's and bugs without getting stung or bitten?!

Macro shows a lot of detail, but the parts not in detail give me a huge headache. But those pictures still amaze me - every single one!

Boostslut 11-11-2008 07:30 PM

Pretty cool looking woodbug. I think that's what they are?

look at those evil eyes :D

Mananetwork 11-11-2008 08:51 PM

How do you catch these guys without them running away?

Boostslut 11-11-2008 08:55 PM

Patience mostly. Of course many do fly away, but overall you get some good shots. Gotta take what you can get.

Boostslut 11-13-2008 11:55 AM

Played around with my MPE-65mm today. Didn't get anything too crazy. Just some common fly's. Man this thing is sharp! This picture is maybe 2 times lifesize? I haven't even got down to 5 times just yet. Its a super tough lens to use, that will get stunning results with practice.

More better images will come with time. Hope you enjoy the macro's!

Boostslut 11-16-2008 11:30 AM

Moar macro's! Dinosaur! Actually its a Shield Bug.

You should see my new macro experiment =) I'll post a couple by this weekend

Whats the setup? :)

On the MPE-65mm Macro

1X life size (the max magnification the 100mm macro can achieve)

http://i37.tinypic.com/wclqgx.jpg

5X life size

http://i33.tinypic.com/f3fewx.jpg

Not the best pics by any means, but just to show you what it can do. This thing has such shallow DOF @ 5X its crazy! Those are full frames, no cropping or anything.

Thanks!

niforpix 11-18-2008 05:47 PM

I see a lot of sensor dust... :p

Boostslut 11-18-2008 05:48 PM

Yeah it magnifies that too! haha..

dub.dub 11-19-2008 08:39 PM

That's the max the 100mm macro can do? :\ Anything closer up? I thought I saw previous images from that lens that are closer.

EOS > M42 adapter, Fujica macro bellows, Super-Takumar 50mm f1.4 or 135mm f3.5
About $100 for the whole setup

Gets in pretty close for what it is, but damn does it ever magnify the dust on my sensor:eek:

dub.dub 11-19-2008 11:09 PM

^ shots of the macro it can do :)

Boostslut 11-20-2008 03:26 AM

dub.dub thats how tiny that subject is. :) very very tiny.

Boostslut 12-07-2008 02:33 PM

They are called a Dicyrtmina. Interesting little guys. Cool colors! Taken with a 40D + mp-e 65mm macro lens + MR-14EX Flash. Magnification around 4X. Cropped down a bit. So getting maybe 6X life size all together.

DeFactoGuy 12-12-2008 09:15 PM

having some fun w/ reverse EF-S 18-55 (non IS) lens.

I can't wait to pick up a macro lens for my camera..

Any suggestions for a Macro lens for my Nikon? Obviously I dont want some $1000 plus lens...

But I do want something quite good at a reasonable price..

Doesnt matter if its Nikon, Tamron or Sigma branded...hell if I can save some money buying a really good 3rd party lens, I would..

Any suggestions would be awesome...

I cant wait to be able to take pictures like that!

endless402 12-17-2008 04:22 PM

grabbed a tamron 90mm for my d300

now waiting for extension tubes to arrive

big question is whether i should go for the sigma ring flash or the nikon r1
