Im starting to really enjoy macro photography, do you think its worth the investment to get a dedicated macro lens?

For sure! Thanks to Jason (Senna4ever) and his macro shots, I got into it too. :D I picked up a Canon 100mm macro lens a while back and I love it! And now Canon came out with the new version of it, 100mm L series lens with IS! *droooool*

One of my old shots:

I was saving up for a 70-200mm 2.8L IS
but the 100mm 2.8L IS Macro suddenly got much more appealing..

Ahhhh what to do...

Boostslut 12-12-2009 07:22 PM

Macro is alot of fun forsure! Looks like your on to a great start! If your interested i'm selling the most powerful macro setup money can buy for Canon. MPE-65mm and a mr-14ex ring flash. You can play with the setup too if you like, its pretty crazy!

niforpix 12-13-2009 01:24 PM

I wish that MPE-65 had autofocus. I'd be all over that!

Boostslut 12-13-2009 09:24 PM

Would u like to try it out sometime niforpix? :P Auto focus is useless from 1:1 on really..

We have one in the rentals department.

If stupid Canon would put slow speed AF like some other camera bodies, AF would be perfectly feasible.

Haha I'm ok, thanks. Like Senna said, we've got one in rentals. I'm surprised I haven't tried it yet :p

Nice shots! Could use some more DOF though! Keep it up!

ninjai123 01-07-2010 09:13 PM

i was wondering how you guys get so close up to the object without the blackhole i had to flip my 50mm on a 35-70mm and i get the black hole around the object.

77civic1200 01-07-2010 09:35 PM

^ are you saying you are using 2 lenses at the same time? with one reversed?

You know you are only supposed to use the one right?

Boostslut 01-07-2010 09:41 PM

I googled it.

First thing that came up. http://stephenelliot.com/2007/05/15/...aphy-tutorial/

77Civic, its lens-reversing. Two lenses, a 50mm reversed on another lens works great! Don't know why your getting a black hole though. Hmm..

CP.AR 01-07-2010 09:52 PM

Read the link boostslut found - I would say the black hole is caused by the focal lengths... I don't know how to explain it, but I imagine it being something like "looking through a tube"

In other words, try messing about with the lengths a bit

niforpix 01-07-2010 09:57 PM

^^ "boostslut" not "bootslut" lol

ninjai123 01-08-2010 10:19 AM

yeah I don't know why either with the black hole i put both of the lense to infinity maybe my hand is not really good at handling the second lense lol

Senna4ever 01-09-2010 01:08 AM

My current set-up: 5DmkII + Nikon 55mm f2.8 Micro-Nikkor. Gonna test it out tomorrow!

does that setup only allow manual focus and control? which adapter are you using?

Senna4ever 01-10-2010 08:32 PM

I'm using the Novoflex EOS to F Mount adapter. It's a little expensive at about $250, but it's extremely well made, unlike the shitty $50 ones you can get on e-bay. As the lens is a 30 year old manual focus lens, there is no AF, but AF is useless anyway in macro photography. Exposure is via stop down metering.

Boostslut 01-10-2010 09:11 PM

Post some up Senna let's see the magic!

Senna4ever 01-10-2010 11:19 PM

The bokeh of the Nikon lens is awesome. Didn't get any shots, as I ran out of light. Here are some scanned Velvia 50 slides taken with a Nikon F4s and the 55mm f2.8 Micro-Nikkor.
