A couple funny things in Richmond last night:
first, my friend's STI was having trouble last night, those Kumho 4 seasons are not that great, i know he's a pretty smart driver, so i blame the tires.
Second, i saw a Bentley Continnetal Flying Spur on Alderbridge, seems to be doing fine.
Third, saw quite a few cars stranded in a parking lot, the thing is, when they're stuck in the snow and trys to move, people only know how to move forward? they never think to go reverse and THAN forward... and they don't even turn the steering wheel! finally when the car starts moving, dunno why they have to stop or slow down again, don't even know how to keep the momentum going... oh, i sounded like i'm ranting...

Nothing wrong with going only as fast as you feel safe to, but everything is wrong about blocking others and interfering with others' speed, as I always said. | I'm not complaining about people driving 20km/h. Would be a hazardous to let them drive any faster because they are the ones most likely to lose control on their own. But blocking me AND going 20km/h makes me grumpy. Quote:

i plan on driving to cypress tomorrow on my all seasons. if they setup check points on the mountains, I will pull over and attach the chains. if not, I drive up simple. |
I also drove all day with OEM all seasons. Snow tires are more responsive but it just depends if you think it's worth the money to spend on. Besides this winter, all the previous years had snow that lasted like 1 or 2 days at most. And it wasn't higher than maybe 5cm. (This winter is just going crazy)
Although driving up a mountain might not be the best idea unless the roads are plowed. If you already have chains, why not just attach them. You can go uphill on the streets, but if the whole path (like a mountain) is all uphill, you're gonna be going up there very slowly. like crawling speeds with just the all seasons. Quote:

FF for teh win.
And yes, shovelled driveway @ 1am this morning. Looked like at least 20cm? |
Someone I know had a bad accident where the side of their car was all caved in. Surprised they can still walk with minor injuries. I think the accident happened on HWY #1 too... not sure though. Quote:

I got stuck yesterday trying to get into my back alley. I probably could of wiggled my way through eventually... but it would waste a lot of gas, and a lot of rocking/spinning. Wasn't worth the time so I just parked in the front of my house. Quote:

I really do think 4seasons are adaquette as long as you drive smart. So I'm surprised.
And yes, I see too many people just ripping it forward and spinning those tires and going nowhere in their FWD. All they have to do is reverse a bit, then gas hard again and the momentum will go over any patch of snow that got them stuck earlier. Once you're rolling, hard to get stuck with a FF. This is stuff ICBC doesn't teach you. Instead, they just tell people not to drive when it snows. This is why there is so many dumb drivers on the road that are scared of snow. But then again, I guess it's good advice to tell drivers to just stay home when it snows. I have the road all to myself. I acutally can get to places faster now with better gas mileage.

4 season tires are deadly traps for winter weather...
you REALLY need winter tires if you wanna drive in this snow, oh, and either FWD or AWD...
Don't even THINK about heading out with 4 seasons and RWD or summer/fall tires...
I haven't taken my car out since last last saturday...a good 10 days =(

i plan on driving to cypress tomorrow on my all seasons. if they setup check points on the mountains, I will pull over and attach the chains. if not, I drive up simple. | Sure, all-seasons can still get you around for the most part, but there are times where winter tires will make the difference. Bottom line is winter tires grip a lot better in the snow and cold, and it's not just the tread. The rubber compound is different too and maintains more grip in cold temperatures.
Even if you're good at driving in the snow with all seasons, what if someone else comes out from the side street and you can't stop in time? You might be able to with winter tires.
Sure, that probably won't happen... but there's always a chance. Up to you to decide if it's worth it or not.
I was fine driving with just all seasons in the past... but last winter, my tires were going bald anyway, so I decide maybe I should just spring for a couple snow tires for my front. There definitely is a significant difference.
Saturday night, I was going up the Knight Street hill after the bridge and my tires didn't slip once, and others in all season tires were leaving snake trails sliding left and right spinning their tires all the way up the hill...

Sure, that probably won't happen... but there's always a chance. Up to you to decide if it's worth it or not. | True that the chances are low, and it probably won't happen, but the risk is there. But I guess there is always risks. I personally have seen, because of the snow, everyone is crawling 40km/h at max on city streets, and inside streets, no one is even able to poke their car out into the intersection at any speeds excessive 5 km/h, due to slipping or uneven snow. But I guess that also depends which part of the city you're in.
But no doubt, snow tires will always have a big advantage over 4-seasons.

Feel like preparing a nice batch of water balloons for them just to get their attention. If honking and high beaming doesn't work, what else will?

There is just too much snow! Took me almost 10 minutes to get my car onto my driveway and I have Nokian's!
I better go start shoveling the street in front of my house. It's just one giant mess.

the snow plows came and shoved all the snow right at the bottom of our drive way...took 15 min of moving back and forth in an AWD SUV, what a pain...
being on the road at 6:45am doesn't help, being one of the first cars to go through the big piles of snow, swear the plows didn't go through the main roads/highway till way after 7:00am.

Hahaha... wow, from reading this thread, it really does suck to be you people! The snowplow left a few feet of snow at the end of my driveway; it took me all of about 30 seconds to get out.
And that was with four year old all-seasons.
And no chains.
There's a lot more to driving in the snow that simply what tires you have. Yeah, tires may be where the traction comes from, but it also comes down to how your drivetrain works, how the differential/s work, traction control systems, etc etc. That said, maybe I just don't see why anyone could ever complain about this much snow cramping their driving, unless you have some crazy low car that's more snowplow than car LOL
EDIT WITH PICS:
The Problem:
The Solution:
I don't see the issue?

Damn there's a stupid idiot on my street who parked his Accord a car length from the curb because he's either stuck or too lazy to dig out his drive way. Now it's slightly blocking street traffic because we have a two lane road. Shit, if this douche is still there later tonight, I'm gonna go leave him some presents on his car.

And I'd stay away from anything trying pass itself off as a "LandRover," because it's clearly a cheap chinese knock off of the genuine article, just like your "Royalex" watch.

Regardless, anyone with AWD or 4x4 and some decent all season tires should be able to get around just fine if they are smart about it.

You'd think. Hell, I would say the same thing... but then, you remember that people think BMW's X-series', Porsche Cayennes, Audi Q7s, Hummer H2s, Escalades, and pretty much every douchebag that put 24" wheels on their Silverado/Sierra thinks that they have a proper all-terrain vehicle.

The problem is they think having AWD means they can drive the posted speed limit because it's "made for the snow" or something, or that it's fine to attempt any hill because AWD will get you anywhere.
