Commuters beware: freezing temperatures expected this weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The snow has eased off and turned to rain over most parts of Metro Vancouver, but we still have some chilly temperatures to worry about as we head into the weekend.

On top of exam cancellations at SFU and some transit delays, New Westminster Police have also warned that the hills are very treacherous and they're advising commuters not to take that drive if they don’t have to.

Across the Lower Mainland, every municipality is preparing for very cold temperatures, which means salt and sand will become a very precious commodity.

And for yourself, you might want to drop by the local hardware store and get some sand and salt for your sidewalk.

If you're thinking about putting snow tires on your car, Steve Menzies from OK Tire in Burnaby says if you don't already have winter tires, it may be too late to get some because many sizes and brands, have sold out.

"Try to be creative and find sizes for people to get their snow tires on their cars, but don't wait if you're planning on buying snow tires, don't wait, because its not going to get any better, its going to get worse."

Menzies says one of the possible reasons for the shortage is it’s been legislated in the province of Quebec that - by law - all cars must have snow tires on with no exceptions.
