recently went from 5/8ths to 3/4ths

raygunpk 03-29-2009 12:24 PM

Hmm I always wondered what mine is... I go to Cyclones and just get whatever. Maybe I should try 5/8.

If you don't know, then you're getting the default "regular cut"

I sharpen at 7/16

Yep. I still have a pair of pump skates from the past. Hahah.

raygunpk 03-29-2009 02:35 PM

What's the default at Phil? 1/2?

SumAznGuy 03-29-2009 08:34 PM

default is 3/8's I believe.

mickz 03-29-2009 08:35 PM

According to Tobi at Cyclones the "regular" sharpening hollow changes from 3/8" to 1/2" depending on the time of the year.

KDawG[CRX] 03-29-2009 08:42 PM

it all depends on what you like...
and yes it does depend on what time of year it is...
that mainland athletics screwed up the pitch i had on my skates, i was on a 9 inch radius, and he put a reverse pitch on my skates... i had to get my skates re-profiled

raygunpk 03-30-2009 07:03 AM

that's cuz you suck at life kel :)

Hondaracer 03-30-2009 06:13 PM

hockeyshop sharpening ftw.. go on saturdays when the best techs are there

I totally have to agree with you on that. I live in richmond and i drive all the way to the hockey shop for sharpenings.

mickz 03-31-2009 01:45 AM

Never really had my skates "butchered" since I first started playing and had Sportchek sharpenings... but then again I only get the usual 3/8" or 1/2" cuts and have never had my skates profiled.

Noir 03-31-2009 09:08 AM

Anyone ever tried Sports Exchange on Burrard for sharpenings? How are they?

KDawG[CRX] 03-31-2009 11:12 AM

the guys there are really solid, no complaints so far..
i'm sticking with ultimate edge in north van, they profiled my skates and set up everything for me

Leopold Stotch 03-31-2009 03:31 PM

Pretty new but

juts bought my first real stick from wood

Bauer Vapor XVI intermediate stick

i love it, so short and it's like a slinky :D

Hondaracer 04-01-2009 10:17 PM

if a sharpening takes less then 10 min it's not being done right imo

If a sharpening takes 10 minutes, then find a new person to do your sharpenings.

If you're first in line, your skates should be done 5 minutes....max.

kwokerz 04-01-2009 11:12 PM

one free skate sharpen at sportchek with that scotia bank coupon that you can find a red flag deals. i think its until june 2009.

Here's the coupon for those wondering. It's a good deal for those who aren't worried about getting their skates butchered but if you happen to know a good tech at Sportchek it's quite the deal. Unfortunately I know of none.

Sportchek will probably fuck up your skates so you'll end up having to pay a real hockey store to fix it. I'm not a skate sharpening expert and I have never sharpened a pair of skates but from sharpening drill bits, you don't want burn marks everywhere. That's how my skates always turned out with Sportchek.

can you explain why it changes depending on season?

Hondaracer 04-02-2009 04:54 PM

My buddy bought skates from sportscheck and got the complimentary sharpening

I don't know if they just didn't even do it but they were dull as if they weren't even touched

KDawG[CRX] 04-02-2009 07:10 PM

willinder:
it changes during seasons because during the summer, the ice is softer, so you don't need such a deep hollow, during the winter/colder seasons, the ice is harder, therfore you need a deeper hollow, but its the best rinks, that you don't need to change the hollow to skate, there are very few rinks in the lower mainland that you don't need to change the hollow... a lot of people don't notice it, but if you are using your edges a lot, then you notice it
