Paying more for worse gas quality so we can support corn growers?

How is ethanol on fuel economy rating and air pollution? dont tell me it burns dirtier

must be

otherwise i dont see the point other than adding stupid ehtnanol when it does more harm than good

So no word on Esso here using ethanol in their 87 (no ones said anything so I'm judging that they don't have the additives that Shell, Chevron and Petro do)? Shell probably does from what I've been reading so far. I filled my tank with the Chev 87 BEFORE the 21st, so I'm a bit lucky I guess.

Nothing but a marketing gimmick. The way I see it is

1) Government legislates that all gas must have ethanol
2) Ethanol demand soars
3) Ethanol price goes up
4) Farmer grow corns (which is DIFFERENT from the corn we eat, these corns are not edible) to make more money
5) More farmer grows corn means less land for growing food
6) Food prices go UP
7) Gas prices does NOT go down, all in the name of reducing carbon footprint

End result:
a) Common people have to endure higher food prices AND high fuel prices
b) Oil Company: PROFIT

fishing666 01-26-2010 02:48 PM

ethanol is fairly safe at 10% or less
ethanol has less energy per unit of volume making that 1.10$/litre not worth 1.10$/litre anymore so your mileage goes down

why do they add ethanol to lower grades????
ethanol makes the octane rating go up

Anyone who thinks the Mayans could predict the downfall of earth many hundreds of years in the future, but couldn't predict their own downfall at the hands of the Spaniards is completely retarded.

haven't seen any labels at chevron, but no wonder im not get 400km+ a tank like i used to. never changed my driving habits either.

orange7 01-26-2010 11:03 PM

i've been only running on chevron, would it be a bad idea to switch to shell now?

Why would it?

i'd think it would be beneficial to switch it up once a while to get a different additive in there to clean out whatever gunk techron couldn't get out.

I've only been brushing with Crest my whole life, would it be bad to switch to Colgate now?

It won't make an appreciable difference to most of the cars people drive. Especially unmodified cars used for commuting. The folks most likely to notice a difference are those running at the ragged end of an aggressive tune, and you know what? They're running 94 already, and won't be affected by the ethanol blend.

Simple. all gas is mixture of 87 & 94. If ethanol can make rating go up, they can use less 94, which has a higher profit margin.

I find that it's not good idea to switch shampoo. I get a lot of flakes whenever i switch, it takes a while for my scalp to adjust

Mmmm... some, but not all. Depends what station you're talking about.

If you want to know for sure if it's a blend, or a regular mix... then watch the analog dials, if you can see them that is (some stations are blocking them off with stickers). And not all stations have 94 to blend with...

In some states, you can get 85 octane... pretty sure they're not mixing 94 and 87 to get that ;)

What annoys me is that lots of pumps nowadays only have 1 nozzle for all 3 grades.

It means I have a probability of getting either 87 or 89 for the first few litres of my 91!

Boooo.

Less than a litre way less. 89 is just a mix of regular and premium.

Esso gas contains no Ethanol.

Esso gas contains no Ethanol.

Pretty sure the piping contains more volume than 1 litre.

Yeah, but Esso has no cool additives. All they've got is a non-talking Tony the Tiger mascot. :haha:

TL_99 01-27-2010 05:11 PM

if esso gas has no ethanol in the 87, then i'm going to try esso again. if its truly that bad, then i will have to go for shell 92 or sth like that which has no ethanol

Esso gas contains no Ethanol.

when i was at esso it says May contain up to 10% of ethanal.. at the bottom corner where it is hard to see in small letters.. explain that?

mekaw 01-27-2010 08:29 PM

I filled up my parent's mini van today and esso said 10% ethanol in their gas posted on their pump.

I dont have issues using chevron since I only use 94 yee yee

TypeRNammer 01-27-2010 08:37 PM

FUUUUUU so far bad gas mileage on chevron 89 octane
