Yeah plastic kits. I think I'll go take a look today! |
Well the deal is actually for the full week. So not too bad! |

Honestly, I buy model kits often. Go Go Hobbies in Coquitlam is by far the cheapest place to get them. Even lower than eBay. Only drawback is, they don't have stock. However, they can get whatever you need within a week. If you're close to Richmond and need the model now, Imperial has the advantage. Some people don't mind paying the extra for selection and in-stock items. Being close to Coquitlam, it is a no brainer for me. Always phone ahead. Tamiya Paint is also cheapest at Go Go. And no, I don't work for Go Go Hobbies. |
Just got back, forgot to check this thread again LOL. Anyways, bought a Fujimi Merc 190E for $20 (ebay'd and google'd at the store, couldnt find it for cheaper at least with shipping). Also had a $15 JZX90 Toyota Mark II in my hands but put that back down. edit: pic of the Benz for fun http://www.1999.co.jp/itbig06/10063577.jpg Decent I guess, but nothing extraordinary. They had some retarded pricing on some of the other kits though, like a $64 kouki S13. I'll definitely keep Gogo in mind, but maybe after I start getting through all the kits that are accumulating in my room...its baaaad |
Don't get me wrong, Imperial has some really good deals on clearance stuff. It's just recent stuff that is waaaayyy overpriced. IJN battleships and crusers, for example, are on average $100.00 more than what I pay for at Go Go Hobbies. Go Go Hobbies works for me, because I know exactly what I want and can wait the one week it takes for the order to come in. Tamiya tools, the Snap On of the model world, is way cheaper through Go Go. I used to purchase a lot of Tamiya Craft Tools from HK, because it was so cheap. Now I don't bother. The only time I buy models off eBay is if it is no longer available in NA. BTW, shopping on-line from HK is pretty damn good. Shipping is trouble free and models are duty free! The other time to buy models at ridiculously low prices is the IPMS swap meet. Fall Show |
5 Attachment(s) Started building the Tamiya 1/350 IJN Yamato (new version) at Christmas time. I've spent a bit of time on it and have the hull and main decks painted and put together. I also have the main guns completed, along with the superstructure and a few other major parts. So many photo etch parts to deal with. I don't have high quality pics of the model, just ones I took with the iPod. The fans on my paint booth are getting a workout. That primer stuff is plain nasty. I just love my Iwata airbrush. Gone are the days of spraying with aerosol cans and wasting a tonne of paint. All the painting is done in the 20 ft car hauler out back (more like dog house). Wife would kill me if I painted inside the house. |

that is a hardcore setup... |
^I cringed as I cut two 4 inch holes in the floor of the then brand new car hauler for the two exhaust ducts from the paint booth. This is what happens when you move from the Valley to Burnaby. You have to buy a house that's half the size at twice the price. My tools and stuff had to go somewhere. The trailer is heated, has a good sound system, and a few other goodies. All I need for summer is a bar fridge and an air con, although it cools down pretty good with door up front open and the rear ramp lowered. |
Now I'm tempted to get equipped with an airbrush :okay: A little worried about the thickness of Krylon primer on panel lines and such.. |
^Tamiya Primer is so sexy. The stuff does not build up or cover up minute details. Tamiya Fine White or Grey is what you need if you don't want details covered up. As for airbrushes, I will never go back to anything else. The finish you get with an airbrush is amazing. You have so much control. From hairlines to wide spray pattern. All you need is a compressor with a pressure regulator. |
Tamiya fine primer is really the best stuff there is..period.. I got a can of Krylon primer after using Tamiya for a while and hated it. Too bad I can't find any more Tamiya grey around here. Mr. Surfacer 1200 is pretty good too. |
Tamiya grey comes in regular and light version. So I'm told. I always thought grey was not as fine as the white primer. I have a can of Tamiya fine grey primer. I don't use it because most of the IJN Tamiya kits are in grey, LOL. I bought the stuff for German armour, which comes in sand colour. BTW, on advice from a salesperson at Imperial Hobbies, I bought a Valejo, water based primer. It is meant for airbrushes, so I bought it right away. I've tried it a few times and I am disappointed by the results. I always end up going back to the Tamiya primer. 12 bucks a can at Go Go Hobbies is the best price anywhere, and I get a "good guy" discount on top of that (hee hee). For those who are getting into painting their models, be it Gundams or anything else, using a primer is a must. I painted a model once without primer and the paint came off too easily from just handling it. Also, the Tamiya primer goes on so nicely, I can get away with not washing the parts in water prior to painting (I can see some hard core modellers cringing from what I just said). |

Also, he told me small scale models are making a come back. He has had so many people special order models and supplies recently. To the point he is going to start carrying all Tamiya paint colours in all types - acrylic flat/gloss, TS spray paint and even the AS series for airplane modellers. The other day I picked up some CA glue. I thought CA glue is CA glue, but there are all kinds of different ones out there. I bought the one that is semi gel type that is also flexible. Damn, it makes applying photoetch so much easier. |
It's been quiet in here, so I thought I'd share my latest DIY project. Really simple idea. There is a similar item you can buy out there called the parts saver, but it has some flaws. My little solution works for me and it cost next to nothing. When working with small parts, you drop it and it's nearly impossible to find. I've lost plenty of very important parts in the past. Not only that, but finding it can take forever. Here's what I did. http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...apronfront.jpg Took an old apron I got from somebody ("Get Cracking" egg apron) and put some velcro on the table and back of apron. http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...nbacking-1.jpg I can remove the apron from the table at any time. When using it, I take the neck strap and wear it like normal, but bottom upside down, forming a trough. Sory, no POV pics taken, LOLOLOL. When not in use, I simply roll the sucker up and it's out of the way. http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...c/rolledup.jpg Now there's no way for parts to hit the floor and get lost when I fumble. |
How are everyone's builds going? Been working on a widebody 86: http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...me/1234567.jpg |

Great thread! getting back into the whole models thing myself now that I've freed up a room downstairs to be used as a 'display room'. Going to have it mixed with assorted diecast and plastic models. BUT.. sad to say, lost my patience on this 'polar lights USS ENTERPRISE REFIT'...but all I'll have to do is repaint it white and try again later...in the meantime, er.. gunmetal spray paint won out lol. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...74588343_n.jpg |
I really should start building some before buying more...:okay: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y80...719_000401.jpg |

Hm, after browsing this thread, I might just make the trip to Imperial to pick up a couple of car model kits when I need the paint for my Armored Core Ambient model. I can't wait for that one to show up since NOBODY in town stocks AC models, and the last one I saw three years ago was a hundred bucks. Also, is it better to paint Gundam-style pieces with them in the rails, or should I remove them and paint them individually? |
Imperial Hobbies has their anniversary/customer appreciation sale sometime in August. In recent sales, the discounts were 25% off everything in the store. If you can wait till then....... |
