TOPEC 07-26-2011 04:27 PM

also, how well do these camera work at low light/night time recording?
it would suck to record an accident during night time and the video is just grainy and blurry

CP.AR 07-26-2011 04:29 PM

can the members that have a camera post up a sample full res video on youtube? And perhaps post up a link to where you got it :D

Bahhbeehhaaaa 07-26-2011 05:08 PM

even if is 200 buks or even 400 buks cam, I think is worth it because one day it may save me from a million dollar accident.

The is the app I use:
Cockpit Recorder for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G on the iTunes App Store

And this is the mount (not exactly the same one, but similar):
Aftermarket Windshield Mount - GPS Accessories

Here are some videos I took....

In for any group buy of a dash cam with 720p support, and auto delete old clips function!

too_slow 07-26-2011 09:11 PM

Anyone use a GoPro HD as their dash cam? Experiences?

Death2Theft 07-26-2011 09:25 PM

Go pro would be horrible at night.
Would love to see peoples installs as well.
Vacuum dash mount leaves rings behind telling thieves which cars to break into.
I'd prefer a front/rear bumper or rearview mirror mount.

I use the GoPro HD mounted on my dash but it stands out like a sore thumb. I'd prefer a smaller semi hidden one.
As Death2Theft states, they are horrible when it starts to get dark, and I'm not too impressed with the video it takes during the day.

AVS_Racing 07-26-2011 10:18 PM

the problem with cameras like go pro that doesn't have the auto on feature, is that it is a bitch to have to manually turn the cam on every time you use it or have to turn it off after you park. im actually looking to upgrade cuz mine doesn't have the auto on/ shut off feature

TOPEC 07-27-2011 12:00 AM

yes as mentioned, theres a few flaws with the gopro hd

1: its not auto on/off
2: it doesnt record over the files
3: it used to battery powered only, but now new firmware update has enabled the gopro to be charged while recording
4: it doesnt have screen to show what is recording so its a pita to aim correctly

although most of the flaws can be fixed, its just a pita to set it up and get it running properly, not to mention the car suction cup is HUGE

I started driving around with a Flip miniHD camera hooked up to a suction camera rig I purchased off DealExtreme. I was looking @ some of the camera stuff they had on DealExtreme but I was suspicious about the quality. I stumbled upon the Flip website and noticed they were having a sale because Flip was being shut down by Cisco. It sounds strange but I have the suction cup on the top left corner of my windshield and I have the Flip recording upside down. I'll some some photos of the setup later on. It sounds strange but it works great and its in HD. When you view the videos, you just have to flip it around 180 degrees. VLC will allow you to do that for example. The whole setup costs about $130 which is cheaper than my $300 collision deductible I figure if I ever get into an accident and I need to prove my side of the story. The advantage of using the flip or any other flash camcorder is that you have a decent camcorder around if you are not driving ... say if you get caught up in a riot? =) The bad thing about the Flip I'm using is the battery life is weak @ only 1 hour. It'll record my drive to work which is 30 minutes and then I can charge it @ work but if I'm out with my friends, that's a different matter.

Not to sound like an asshole, but everyone always MENTIONS "group buys" rarely does anyone do anything about it. In my experience with doing one on RS, you have to trust the people who are even interested in the item you're doing. To do my mirror one was SO tedious its not even funny. Heads up to the guy who does end up setting one up.

This is why you only deal with legit members or those who have a good history.

Thankfully, we can quickly figure this out by searching the member's post.

It may sound unfair the new guys but it's a precaution that most should take when considering organizing a group buy.

All the group buys I've had on RS have been successful ones, however, it is mainly due to dealing with people that are regulars on this forum.

Wonder if this would work when your car is off. Got hit and run the other day. :(

Hehe 07-27-2011 09:40 AM

How many people are actually interested?

My cousin sells this exact product (range from VGA to HD quality ones, some with GPS location record built-in)... but his minimum is 50sets/order I think.

I can figure out more details if there's enough interest.
