off topic, but because of your tip i got this camera for cheap. finally got a helmet cam for snowboarding. thanks man!

also, contour HDs work great inside the car. it has a wide field of view so when i jammed it on my passenger seat's head rest for a test drive, you can basically see the road AND the driver at the same time. really cool camera.

This is how I mount my FlipHD Mino. Its basically @ the top left corner of my Honda Fit. It might seem like its right in my face but its not. Its not even in my peripheral vision most of the time when I drive.

Here are some video samples @ nite in the rain which I figure are the most trying conditions. Because I mount my Flip upside down, the videos are also upside down. Whenever I review a video, I use VLC and can just rotate it but most of the time, if there are no accidents, I just delete the video without reviewing it.

for car cam its crap. it does have wide angle, but doesn't stay on when connected to power, doesn't do cycle recording either.. however video quality is good, lowest setting, my 8 gb card would run out in 4 hours, (but batt last only 1-2 hours)

AutoBlackBoxShop.com are they even a legit bossiness? i emailed them almost a month ago and they still didn't get back to me.

i did lot of research
and got the DOD GS300
it is small and record 1080p - no LCD screen but it is nice and small
records automatically when you turn key on
and stops when you turn key off
easy to install - long power wire goes to 12V plug

Pro:
small, good quality, 1080p - use micro SD card, easy to install, very good video qualitly, loop recording when memory card is full.

Con:
setting up needs a small monitor or tv in order to change the setting, night time recording is a little snowy if no enough lights.

8GB micro sd card records 2 hours of 1080p

here is a sample @ 480p reduce quality in order to upload

here is another no sound @ 720P better quality but remember to change the setting on youtube in order to watch 720p

it is not cheap cost me $275
there are cheaper models of course
but like anything in life, you want better quality, you have to pay more.

I'm sorry if I missed it in previous posts, but does the Black Box record sound as well? Out of all the ones I've been looking at, that one looks the most promising.

EDIT: Can it record for 24hrs? Like even if you're parked and away from the car?

you have to be more specific!
because more and more of these car recorders are called black box
are you talking on a specific model or brand?

Sorry, I meant the KCI Smart Black Box.

I am not sure about the wisdom of having GPS/data overlaid in the video, since the overlaid text is hard to remove and can be counted against you.. eg if you are hit, while you are slightly over the speed limit. Why risk it if you don't have to?

I think it is better to have velocity/position data recorded in a csv / txt file elsewhere.

With potential evidence and data, you always want to be able to selectively show what you need to prove your case; never show extraneous stuff.

I've been watching a lot of russian car crash compilations lately. Apparently it's mandatory to have a dashcam if you get enough accidents. This along with the bike license will definetly make dealing with insurance a whole lot easier. Also would help with a lot of hit and runs.

There are ones where it'll record even if your car is off but only for 1.5 hr or so before it dies. It'll saved the recorded file before it dies.

I am currently looking at this one.

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

Emailed the seller to see how it sticks to the windshield. Looks like double sided tape or some sort of glue.

The one that you are looking on eBay is recording VGA
That is like web cam definition
It would not be very clear in my opinion
That is why I got gs300 is 1080p
You can lower the quality too
But why bother to record something that is not even clear
Easy way to try
Just setup your digital camera record video in VGA quality
And later play on your tv or computer
Then record 1080p and watch the difference
I just got 3 more of the gs300 for my relatives
They like it
It was cheaper when I bought more this time
$250 after shipping and duties

Someone i know just picked up two cameras from HK. Includes 1080p, sound and can take up to a 64gb card. All for about $110 CAD each.

Highlander711 10-21-2011 09:58 AM

cool that is cheap!
but i guess it all depend of quality and how size

the GS300 is an expensive unit for sure
i have been using mine almost a year and so far no problem
and same
can take micro sd cards up to 64GB
but nobody use that high as the 64GB SD cards are so expensive

i use 8GB and can record 2 hours 1080p
you just need the last 10 min of any clips anyways
and just copy it to your computer
as someone mention it before too
i can lower the quality so i can record longer hours like 720p to 4 hours
but why bother?
most of my trips are less than 1 hours anyways

spoon.ek9 10-21-2011 10:04 AM

forgot to mention it's 30fps too. anyways, the reason some people need 64gb cards is to record while the car is parked during work hours. hit and runs are super common in cramped parking lots of asian malls.

PiuYi 10-21-2011 11:09 AM

^itd be horrible if their car was broken into and the camera stolen because they had a $200+ gadget sitting there in plain view :lol

spoon.ek9 10-21-2011 11:34 AM

haha that's true but this is a $100 gadget :troll:

iono, give and take. there's risk involved with everything.

If that the case I don't thing dash camera would work
You would be recording the front of your car only
How about your sides and back?
You will need to buy 4 camera for each side if you are using as security device
Or in case someone hit your car in the parkade

As for someone want to steal it
Well same as gps system
You have to protect them
But on the other hand
You need to buy a smaller size camera so people can't see it

spoon.ek9 10-21-2011 02:35 PM

well, the only real solution is to back into your parking spot lol. sides, back and interior of course won't be recorded.
