Hey guys been a minute

I'm headed to HK and heard the HK taxi app is gone, is there an alternative other than Uber?

bcrdukes 08-11-2025 04:10 PM

Holy, been forever!

Try Didi. Uber reigns supreme there.

what's the demo of your guest(s)?

dinner 1: Between your options I'd choose Mott 32. But do you want good food, or good ambiance?

dinner 2: Elisa / Gotham usually gets recommended

bcrdukes 08-12-2025 05:52 AM

Since Keg is somewhat ruled out, Badhobz has a suggestion. :troll:

Whatever you do, don’t go to burdock and co. That place is overrated as hell. I don’t know how it got its Michelin star. It’s terrible. Published on main or Anna Leah is much better.

Spent 500 bucks there for two people eating absolute trash.

I always recommend Boulevard (in the Sutton Hotel) for anyone looking for a nice dinner. They've introduced a dry-age steak program on top of their other steak offerings (hanger, ribeye, striploin, wagyu) and while I can't say it's the very best in town (I hear Elisa is king) it's all very good plus they happen to have perhaps the best seafood menu in town and I'd argue that their dessert is the absolute best in town (the awards are numerous).

Great service that's friendly and relaxed (not stuffy at all - Jameson has a sharp wit), lovely oak wood heavy room, not overly loud (especially if you're in the back).

I also like the demographic there - you get families, you get older rich folks, young tourists being spendy, hotties, etc - it's a nice atmosphere with good energy inside and outside. I've taken my in-laws (with my 6y.o), buddies from out of town, been on a double date etc - it plays well with all sorts of audiences being a hotel restaurant.

The tomahawk and seafood tower I had last year:

theyre family and family friends visiting from san fran.
im tipping the scale towards good ambiance but good food is a plus.
is there a reason you would recommend mott vs QJ? QJ's menu looks more luxury.

Boulevard has what I consider a hilarious kids menu. It's a 3 course meal for $48 (!!!) and you can get a prawn cocktail as part of the first course. Like can I just get a bowl of Mac and cheese with a glass of milk for $12? I don't think they have high chairs but they handle kids pretty well due to being a hotel restaurant (I imagine all hotel restaurants handle kids well - much better than the non-hotel fancy places).

Depending on your party size there's a backroom area that has a few booths and which can fit a table for 8-12 which is quieter and pretty spacious that kids can somewhat run around in if needed. It's sometimes used for private parties as well - it just gets real pricey if you go private.

Elisa for steak for sure. Great steak. If you don't go later at night I feel like it is quite kid friendly - saw a few families with young kids when I was there last.

For Chinese food... are they more into traditional Chinese/Cantonese food, or the new style luxury Chinese food? Mott/QJD falls into the latter camp.

For the first style, traditional Cantonese fine dining, I'd suggest Neptune Palace on Marine and Cambie, or Dynasty on Broadway.

AzNightmare 08-12-2025 08:26 AM

Has anyone ordered anything from RockAuto recently and shipping it directly to Vancouver?

Are parts being tarriffed?

I like Mott 32 ambiance over QJD's, and being in downtown means opens up walkable after-dinner activities versus being at the corner of Cambie / 12th. Either option will impress so both are safe options.

Personally I prefer the traditional Cantonese Seafood restaurants like roastpuff suggested, so something like Dynasty or SeaHarbour in Richmond is more up my alley.

I've never looked at Mott32's menu till today and holy shit that's expensive stuff. It does look like top shelf product though but I got a bit of sticker shock - it's seems like some stuff is as much as double what a place like Neptune would charge.

I bought some brake rotors back in June, and there wasn't any extra charges beyond what the RA invoice showed. And RA only charged for parts, shipping, and taxes.

Not sure if June is recent enough for you though, considering the 30% tariffs just kicked in on Aug 1.

noclue 08-12-2025 09:14 AM

Quanjude weekday lunch special is great value - cheaper than the keg

bcrdukes 08-12-2025 09:17 AM

I just got a bunch of oil filters from RockAuto last week. No additional charges, duties, or tarrifs.

I needed to remove a diseased tree back in May/June, and Sonick recommended DC Tree Services:

https://www.dctree.ca/services

Their crew was good and prices were reasonable. I'd be inclined to hire them again if I need any major pruning done.

nismodrifter 08-12-2025 11:29 AM

Thanks guys I appreciate the recommendations

Doesn’t the checkout at RockAuto straight up say it’s the all included price, no further fees?
