Sorry man :(

Do you have a back up plan?

Akinari 06-12-2015 11:26 PM

Yeah I do, which should've actually been my first choice all along cause it was the thing I genuinely wanted to study, which is human geography/urban planning. So everything's good to go on that front

That sounds like a way better choice!

Since you're done and all, if you don't mind me asking, what was your approxiamate GPA (average)/LSAT score going into the program? How competitive were you in terms of your extra-curriculars? Did you take part in MUN, debate or any student committees in your undergrad?

Energy 06-18-2015 04:54 PM

GPA: 82.xx (w/ drops), 81.xx (w/o drops)
LSAT: 170

My GPA was below average but LSAT was above average. UBC only looks at GPA/LSAT, not extracurriculars. Its a hard numbers school unlike UofT.

Are you considering law school?

not necessarily.. just wanted to get some insight on how competitive UBC graduate programs are in general. Also, my sisters preparing for the LSAT soon so wanted to get an idea

Not sure if you're in on this too, but how does UBC compare to like say TRU and UVIC?

side note though, did a few LSAT practice questions for fun, and its actually quite fun! But I can imagine it being a pain in the ass if you're pressured to do well on it haha

Energy 06-19-2015 12:25 AM

UBC Med and Law are really competitive. Only UofT is more difficult in terms of admissions.

As for UVic and TRU Law, if you can get into UBC then go for UBC. UVic is a good school but UBC is more highly regarded, has a greater selection of classes and is conveniently located in Vancouver so networking is easy.

I wouldn't pick TRU. Their tuition is almost double UBC's and the quality of education and job prospects after finishing are not quite there yet. It also has a reputation as a safety school - if you cannot get into UBC and also cannot get into UVic then TRU is your only choice.

Haha yeah the logical reasoning section of the LSAT is pretty fun. Its like mind games. I do remember it getting very stressful, especially for me because I needed a higher LSAT.

Good luck to your sister! Is she applying to UBC? If she has any questions or concerns I'm happy to help.

Akinari 06-20-2015 12:31 AM

Missing 12 credits of 1st and 2nd year GEOG/GEOB courses, recommend I take them first before moving onto the 3rd and 4th year GEOG/research stuff?

What was the makeup of your class like? Curious to know if UBC values a poli sci/economics background, seeing as both would have a strong carryover..

I would assume anyone with the aspiration of becoming a lawyer would care to update themselves on current events, politics, contemporary issues, would someone who is not as well-versed with these topics have a hard time keeping up in law school?

Energy 06-21-2015 09:05 AM

Class makeup in terms of educational background? There were a lot of poli sci majors but I don't think that helped them much beyond knowing how the government works, the electoral system, how bills are passed, etc.

They really emphasize that background doesn't matter - you could have done Asian Studies or Geography and excelled at law school.

Keeping up with current events, politics and SCC cases can help depending on your interests and what area of law you want to go into. But again, not necessary.

Its more about what you make of it. Its a lot of work but at the same time it was really fun for me. I miss seeing my friends every day and going to class haha.

Akinari 08-12-2015 11:36 PM

last stretch of summer before classes begin again  for those who are still attending UBC, who's down for a pre-school meet sometime in the first week of September before classes begin? Otherwise a good place to meet is at the UBCSCC ice breaker that always happens on the top of North Parkade.

First semester at ubc: Is it possible to opt out of the rec fees and what does it entail?

van19 09-09-2015 04:39 PM

It's not possible to opt out of Athletics and Recreation Fee. It's basically there to pay for varsity sports team, aquatic centre use & random fitness/rec activities. Bullshit i know.. :okay:

Akinari 09-09-2015 09:00 PM

Man why did UBC have to install gigantic offset double speedbumps at the entrance and exit of North Parkade :fulloffuck:

Also I'm 100% confident they are taller than Vancouver speedbump bylaws allow them to be. I saw stock height sedans scraping over them the other day...

Stop wasting our money UBC.

Energy 09-09-2015 09:33 PM

Haha park at rose. No speed bumps and I think it's the cleanest and most spacious lot at UBC.

Akinari 09-09-2015 10:21 PM

With my current classes, the closest parkades are the one right by Asian studies and Thunderbird. Hopefully those don't have speedbumps, will find out tmr morning!

Mining 09-09-2015 10:23 PM

Got hooked up this time with parking. No more getting ripped off!

Explored the new SUB today, not much...lol. what a waste of money. Food still sucks.

van19 09-10-2015 12:22 AM

Any places with free parking near campus or at least free after 5 ? I know of the homes near Forestry. Anywhere else ?

LuHua 09-10-2015 07:50 AM

Does the good ol' stretch of Marine Drive count? haha

And fuck those speed bumps, they're at Thunderbird too. My car's close enough to stock, and it's nailing those stiff stock mud guards unless I inch across.

Akinari 09-10-2015 11:06 AM

Aaaaand parkade by Asian Studies and Thunderbird all have those massive speedbumps. Fucking UBC man. Probably included the cost of those speedbumps in our tuitions too.

There is free parking inside campus a super secret place ehuehuehue some of us here know it, pm me for details

theevilslave 09-10-2015 04:16 PM

Now I wonder how those supercars on campus are gonna park

Not that I'm aware of. But park at your own discretion.

Also, I wonder if enough people file a complaint to UBC they'll consider doing something about those massive speedbumps. I wonder which genius thought that was a good idea.

Signed up for GEOB103 to satisfy my low-level credits, prof was TBA and I went to class for the first time today and the prof is some old Brazilian dude that might as well be lecturing in Portuguese, cannot understand a word he says. Went on SSC and instantly switched class to 2nd term with a well-rated prof. Instapeace outta class :fuckyea:

There's a Shaw stand by the student union hall all of this week -
I'll be working there on Tuesday and Thurs from 930-530 for anybody who wants a student deal on Internet/TV :)
