Checking out re-rides here and there for the new stock, seems like they have decent deals.

Thanks for the helmet suggestion. I was looking at HJC but will definitely look into those and online for some of the gear

All those mixed reviews got me thinking I'd rather spend my money elsewhere.

Were just talking about gear here, not service.. If you know what you want for gear, you wont have a bad experience. I would never have them service my bikes though.. They've always had the best price for any gear and hardware I've bought.

Yeah just gear. I'll check them out, thanks.

If I were in this position, I'd skip the pants. Reallocate the money into the helmet fund. I feel like it's really fucking hard to hurt your legs on a bike anyways. $300 taxes in for a helmet would be kind-of on the budget side. A $500 budget means you'll be getting the premium shit which you wont need to replace for a long time.

DKaz 04-13-2016 01:41 PM

The first time I went down on a scooter, my knees were hit hard. I thought they were scraped off or whatever but it was just impact and road burn with no skin breakage. I got textile pants with knee armour for $110 or something, doesn't need to be expensive.

But textile is damn hot above 30C so I am looking for a decent stylish pair of riding jeans or chinos before the summer.

Don't helmets need to be replaced every 5 years regardless? A more expensive helmet will offer better comfort, noise attenuation, lightweightness, ventilation, etc. but a budget helmet will offer the same protection.

Agreed. Feels like fit is more important on the helmet than the price. None-the-less I wouldn't reallocate your funds from one protection gear to another in your situation. I'll rather suggest you reallocate $ from the bike fund instead.

I spent around $1300 on my gear and feel like it's worth every penny. I read this quote somewhere before.. "If you were given a chance to spend any amount of money on gear the minute before you crash, what gear would you buy and how much would you spend? Now take that amount and buy your gear with it."

Mostly correct... I would say any helmet meeting the ECE22.05 specification are the best ones. The ECE 22.05 standard is built on 25+ years of Government research of crash statistics and every helmet is tested before leaving the factory. Almost every professional racing association, including MotoGP require ECE 22.05 rated helmets.

Although DOT is the only requirement in Canada, DOT ratings aren't formally regulated -- just manufactured to a checklist.

You want a helmet that has both DOT (for legality) and ECE 22.05.

Boy do I want this! Why didn't I find this in 2014 when I was buying a tank??? So hot!

Agreed, I'd spend no less on a helmet... People who thinks just because it reaches satisfaction rating from a standard; thats all they need.

But just like how cars were built, all those cars out there meet the 5* safety standard and these manufactures promote that is what they reach.... but there are more premium manufactures like Mercedes/BMW that exceed the expectations.

and when shit is about to go down, lets be honest we all want to be in the safer and far superior product......

604STIG 04-14-2016 11:21 AM

I got body slammed off the bike when I had my crash years back, thank god I was wearing my spine protector (It was an Icon protector for $110 at the time) A piece of gear to also consider.

Interesting. Is ECE 22.05 considered a higher level safety standard than Snell M2015?

Might need to re-think my next helmet purchase. Provided I can find one that'll fit my head shape.

320icar 04-14-2016 10:42 PM

So how do I find information on which helmets have these higher crash standards?

Raid3n 04-14-2016 11:08 PM

Snell Foundation - Motorcycle Helmet Standard Comparisons

comparison of Snell M2005, DOT and Euro ratings.

Helmets are not my field of expertise I don't know very much about standards or what goes into design/development. However IIRC the Snell 'M2015' rating is actually the highest standard when it comes to impact transfer. The main issue is that unlike 'DOT' or 'ECE 22.15' the Snell Memorial Foundation is a non-profit independent org not endorsed by any government, and therefore fewer helmet brands feel the need to have achieved Snell testing.

Might be wrong on this. Too lazy to fact check. Both are endorsed by professional racing leagues so I would probably rate Snell and ECE on the same level.

Easiest way is to use RevZilla's filters. Also, they wont have everything but you can also look up specific testing results on: http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/

DKaz 04-15-2016 03:10 AM

The budget priced HJC CL-17 is SNELL rated although I think to M2005 or M2010. It's popular among autocrossers.

underscore 04-15-2016 07:51 AM

If you're looking at Snell rated helmets (but I'd make sure it has DOT too, for legality and insurance reasons) make note that there's 3 different types. SA20xx is for car racing, S20xx is for karting, and M20xx is for motorcycling. Personally I'd never cross uses for one since the testing is supposed to be quite different.

If it meets the standard, then its passed all the testing for that standard. There's no real way to know by how much something surpasses the requirements for that standard.

DKaz 04-15-2016 10:44 AM

Interesting. Luckily I don't autocross. Lol.

So I am looking for a first bike, I'm 6'3 and 220lbs. 4K budget

For insurance purposes I've decided to go no bigger than a 400cc.

Right now I have 2 options on hand;

2015 CBR300RA - <1k kms practically new. Selling for 4000
2011 Ninja 400R - 14k kms. Selling for 4000 aswell.

Does 14k km sound like a lot on a motorcycle?

Pros and cons on each? I know CBR is susposed to be underpowered vs ninja 300 or R3. Ninja 400 was a limited production and only one or two markets so aftermarket is limited.

Opinions?

DKaz 04-15-2016 04:39 PM

Honda has 2015 CBR300Rs $1300 off right now FYI. Call Burnaby Centre right now and see if they have any left. Kelowna Honda has a couple of CBR300R w/ ABS for like $4305 all fees in plus tax. 0km, full warranty.

zilley 04-15-2016 04:59 PM

Id just get whatever is cheaper because honestly they're all underpowered :troll:

but for reals, you prob be on a 600 within the season.

This the one you referring to? I'm interested as well but when he stated, takes a couple minutes to warm up. hmm... If it isn't, I agree with the poster above..buy a 600, and I'll pick up the 400! :)

I say you should go for the ninja400. More kick.

Naw thats not the one, have a lead on a private sale going, if i bail then ill pass your info on

Will call carter tmw to ask. Wonder how the CBR300R will fit me. I sat on a Ninja 400R and it was a pretty nice fit, seemed like just the right size for me. I dont like the slipper clutch of the Ninja 300R and the R3 is just out of budget right now for a first bike.

Power wise i dont really care yet cause it will be my first bike and im just putting around town for now not even really any highways.

Im thinking CBR300R will depreciate more than the Ninja 400R at this point as the ninjas been out for 5 years now and theyve been floating around 4k. CBR's brand new go for 4k so when i resell ill be taking at least a 1k hit down to 3k probably.
