They do indeed. The main argument against them is that they cost 50-75% of a 200a service upgrade and technically does not add much value to your home when compared to a 200a service upgrade.

Imo if you're just looking to add EV charging or heat pump capability, then the load share systems are a great option to extend the life of your current electrical service.

I almost wanted to ask for a 3-phase service to accommodate the future workshop that I had imagined. But the cost put that dream to rest. It's cheaper to rent a place with existing 3-phase power. Nevertheless, gotta think ahead. The worst is either having to do the work twice or in my buddy's case, no capacity in his particular area.

My house was super fucked up in terms of loads (something I knew, so upgrading service was the first thing I did after I moved in). 200AMP was basically bringing the house's load back to "ok" for load calculation and an EV charger, but not much else. Given the price difference... I was like... fuck it.

Well yea, load calculation and reality are two different things as well

Generally people with 400a services who’ve calculated a 80% load at 400a end up using closer to a 100% 120a service. It’s extremely rare for these 400a service to use anything close to calculated load unless you’re a house on the west side with a massive heated driveway, indoor pool, etc

And even then most of those people don’t even live in the home so there’s no load anyways

What about a power wall + solar panel on the roof if you need that much capacity? Will that be cheaper in the long run?

Solar will never pay itself off

I think there was somthing locally where if you own your home for 40 years you’ll never pay one of those Tesla roofs off. Even people who live in sunnier parts of the province barely generate a day worth of power to run basic shit like lights etc.

I’m sure it will improve over time but right now in BC solar power is not feasible. I think it also has to do with the intensity of light we get here, like you could be outside on a super sunny day here and barely get burnt, whereas in Arizona, Palm Springs, Nevada, etc. you could spend half a day in the sun and you will DIE lol

^Beyond the quality and reliability of our sunlight here, our electricity is relatively cheap compared to other parts of the world which makes solar power even less attractive from a financial perspective.

That was a beautiful house once you look past all the damage. But damn it'll be another half a million minimum to bring it back to livable condition, and more if you want it to be a little nicer.

Except for the pool, the work that the house needs all seem to be surface-level type of stuff? So the in-house reno costs shouldn't be too expensive, esp relatively to the proper price of the house itself once it becomes habitable & marketable again.

But then there is the pool... What should you even do with it? How much would it cost to rip it all up and just turn it back into a yard?

How much does it cost to have a pool? Is it more of maintenance or hoping it doesn't leak and create a sink hole?

Depends if you heat it or not in the winter. Most people just drain it up to the piping and blow it all out, let it sit

I know a few people who heat theirs throughout the winter to a temp it’s comfortable to swim in and it’s an extra 6-800 a month in gas bills I believe.

Pools are like a BMW though, there’s always somthing going on/having to fix

Exactly.

My parents had a machine shop doing all sorta stuff and I grew up with those machines. So, as crazy as it might sound, my "toys" were basically those machines that my dad had in the shop and I used to do all sort of crazy things with them.

I haven't been working with them other than some occasional urge to custom-made some stuff I want. But the idea is that one day when the kids are off to college, I want to have a shop just so that I can do all sort of coll stuff I used to do as a kid.

If I am understanding things correctly, you can get away with powering 3 phase-powered machines without having 3 phases power -- you just need to get yourself a variable frequency drive to convert your typical single phase power into 3 phase, and these things are not expensive at all -- they are literally a couple hundred bucks. But whether there is enough power to supply the machine could potentially be another story.

Yes and no.

3-phase is not required per se. It's just nice to have it. But that's only true until you have motors running at less than 15hp. Anything beyond that, you can't really do it without 3ph. At least I have not seen anyone hooking those on a single phase power. Plus, you can have multiple things running at the same time (CNCing something and go wreck something with hydraulic press... etc), while without 3phase, you'd have to time them to make sure you are not breaking them.

But it was something crazy like 130k to have it done IIRC. It's going to be cheaper to find a farm with existing 3-phase to rent a barn from them.

without 3ph. you get very inefficient and with 2step residential rates ... good fucking game

my shop runs 18 hours a day and our electricity bill is 2k max... mind you its welder and motors galore here

hehe, you tried xometry?... way cheaper than a full on cnc shop

Residential areas with underground infrastructure very rarely have 3ph unless you live right next to a strip mall etc.
