Don't go to a good school = Failed at life
Didn't get straight A+++++? = Failed at life
Didn't get an entry level job at a bank after high school = Failed at life.
Life's tough over there. Here in Canada, if you suck at life in HK, you can still do okay here. We joke about Asian parent memes and being try-hard Asians to get that extra 10% in class, but that means a lot in HK. Got an ugly face? You're definitely fucked.
you're talking about it as a tourist.. for people earning a middle class wage in RMB that's probably not considered cheap
As a working class in China you're kinda fucked, but it seemed like if you could open a business in China, risks and costs are low, opportunities are high.
Anything related to salaryman without western companies and you're cooked

Fuck tipping, salty that servers make $25-40+/hr, back in the cash days, they're making almost $50-60K net pre 2019 full-time
I forgot: if you are in China/HK and you are "fat" you are 100% screwed. The only person on RS who might not fit that definition is mikemhg. Everyone else is a fat fuck and that's not forgivable in HK/China.
Our food here is cheap! look at waht you can get for 16 bucks at richmond public market
I just bought 2 cuz i wanted to compare captain wah (top) vs wonder wok (bottom)
I would say wonder wok is still better. Higher quality
anyways its so much food that you can easily feed 2 with 1 of these monsters....
fucking westopher and his lesbian vegan queef cookies for 5 dollars each.... just thinking about it makes me queasy.
Imagine buying 2 per day at $32, that's $13,000 a year + my $1,500 studio rent and suddenly it's $30K/year

As long as you're not in Roppongi or Manhattan below 64th street (and even then, you can till find deals), life can be cheap too.
People are inherently bad at finding good deals for some reason. On top of that, people don't compare prices in local areas to their wages, which is very important.

Yes but think about opportunity, you have way more opportunities there, don't forget you are 45 min away from China on transit which is even cheaper spending, you can pick a weekend get away every week, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam is less than a flight time to Toronto and cost. What do we have here now that we can't even go to the US. Absolutely nothing, Victoria? Alberta?
you mean buying a used s2000? that is a weird metric to use to compare a city lol
on that topic though, my friends bf who lives in toronto sold his s2k during covid. it was a low-ish miles one owner ap2 (i think), and all i know for sure is he got 60 something for it.
also aren't you white? we have the most asian white guys on this forum. skinny, 69styles, gerbs...
Well a cheap studio here puts you in the west end or new west, both are kinda ok to live in.
OTOH being cheap in Toronto puts you in Rexdale or a corner of north York.
cuts deep: I bought a house in a corner of North York.

Nuh-uh. Lots of outdoors stuff to do. We used to go portaging out in Algonquin Park (back-country camping across the lakes, with all your gear & supplies loaded w/ you into your canoes) and that was basically free.
There's a ton of infrastructure around this: various outfitters across staging sites w/ canoes and gear and stuff for rent. Back-country campsites that are designated and tracked: the rangers make sure you check in on time, otherwise they'll come rescue you. But at the same time spaced out enough (out of ear- and eye-shot) that you feel like your group is out there alone).
We were essentially camping on private islands, hopping across the lakes. Nothing like that exists in BC that I could find.
It only sucks if you live way out in the middle of no where.
I'm a 10 minute walk from the Yonge TTC line. It's a 20 minute subway ride into downtown. And the subway coverage is way better than Skytrain.

Yeah but if u compare any other west coast city to Hong Kong, the opportunity and trips advantage in HK disappears.
Housing costs is HALF Vancouver in Seattle. New build townhouse 900k.
Salaries is DOUBLE and far more stable than HK with Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon.
Japan is a $500 round trip from SEA lol
Really the only missing flights that matter are Rio and Buenos Aires
Used cars are way cheaper to buy in HK and insure than here, it's the parking and gas that gets you. But then if you can get the China plate then you can get everything done cheap in China.
Can you even get into the US anymore without them icing you and charging you $100k? I doubt the average minimum wage worker or average plumber since you guys referenced that will get any US company to sponsor them. It's only cheap if you're making tech bro money or healthcare, which is not the average person.
What's with all this hating on Canada, I'm getting triggered.
Buddy takes a trip to China and comes back with rose-colored glasses. Don't be like Honda, Baws, everything seems great on vacation until you're living there for an extended period of time.
If you don't like it here go ching chong over to HK and stay there then

It’s probably his first time out there in a long time. Maybe ever. Can’t blame the guy for having a good experience in his homeland.. that’s how they getcha. But if you keep travelling more and more the cracks will show and sooner or later you’ll be missing our rain, moderate temps, super high crime, and overall lifestyle

The North American dream is a sham HAHAHAHAH (so is Australian and European) we're all fucked but Canada definitely isn't the holy grail that us Canadians make out to be lol
Oh you bet I'd leave. Probably missed that post somewhere, but I'd leave for a director role lmao. Dating is easy in HK anyway.

Channeling my inner HondaRacer, Vancouver (in general) is so unsafe that I accidentally did my laundry and touristy roamed around in the largest brothel district in Osaka and western Japan LOL. Yeah, it felt grungy, rundown and almost sketchy with the locals staring you down and you feel obviously out of place, but nothing like Vancouver on a regular basis. I didn't know this was a legitimately sketchy neighborhood till I told a Japanese bartender who said "I'm Japanese and I would NEVER venture into that area"

I don’t think anyone makes Canada out to be a holy grail. Nowhere is, it’s just relative to where you came from. For someone from Uganda, or Palestine, or Syria or Sudan? Canada is absolutely a fucking utopia! We aren’t dealing with active genocides or no drinking water or war. If you think there’s somewhere you could leave Canada for that would have the same delta, it’s genuine insanity. Are there better places to live objectively? For sure, but in a world that has 210 countries or so, there are literally like 7. LITERALLY. If you’re looking for the land of opportunity that Canada was 40 years ago, really the only option is if you believe in reincarnation, eat the end of a shotgun and come back as the kid of rich people. The era of getting rich through hard work is over. Enjoy life for what it is, we have it pretty good.

Literally me before going to Europe:
Holy shit their lifestyle looks amazing!!! Their cities look liveable
While there:
Wait the partying, dating, food all amazing!!
A month later:
wtf why do they all hate each other! The Spanish literally hate if you’re from a different region of Spain??? I can only live in certain countries if I want to make friends easily?? People just bum around until they’re 35 then get married when they get bored??? The POST OFFICE has 50000 rules, none of them written down???? The expats have no friends??? The train is 120 euro????? Electronics are 40% more? Bruh take me back to North America!!

Like calculation of upside/downside of each place is so personal. Everyone be arguing in this thread not just about a specific circumstance but about a range of them too.
I can argue upside of US is generally better for a lot, but for lower income self employed it is bad because of health insurance!
BIC could get a new job in HK that values his exp and triple his salary, math changes a lot then.
I do think rose tinted glasses a lil on the stronger side but sometimes we need some romance to make some changes in our lives. I still have them on for NYC but they’re slowly coming off… still love it here tho.

Yeah it’s gonna be different for everyone pending priorities. Safety, finances, geography, weather, activities, job prospects etc
I will always say though, if you want to move, go for it. Just don’t act like you’re leaving here cause it’s a piece of shit. It’s a great place to live by all of those metrics. Is it the best for all of them for everyone? Of course not. There’s a whole world out there, if shit sucks for you, do what you can to fix it.

Since we're talking about East Asia and how it's so great, I'm sitting on a bullet train to Osaka right now.
I can see why there are so many Americans over here. Food is so cheap and so is getting around.
But you know what's different about Asia? You see people young and old, men and women, doing grunt work. In North America, you don't really see young people doing grunt work anymore, unless it's at Starbucks.
People in North America, especially those who are born in North America, have it pretty easy.
And speaking of fat Chinese people, there's more than plenty of fat Mainland Chinese tourists here. Seems like being overweight with a chubby face still allows you to live a good life in China.
