Or you spend $40k on something big like a renovation or a car, and then lose your job the next day?
Or is it just terrible lack of awareness when it comes to spending?
My parents always paid off the CC in full, every month, and I guess that stuck with me. I've never thought of my CC as way to buy something I couldn't afford to buy with cash.
Sorry I don't mean to be naive, it's genuine question. | A pair of siblings is know is like this, maxed out their credit cards and LOCs working crappy cash jobs to look like they’ve made it. These people actually exist lol
Their mentality is that they’ll pay if off easily when they make more money, which never ends up happening

I know a girl with deadbeat parents but received $4K/month allowance for not being there.
Financed a CLA250 2016, which is funny because she made a statement about guys driving Honda/Toyota's. It was a 2008 Model, that's new in my world.
She also mentioned how she never checks her CC Statements or knows how much is outstanding. Doesn't pay on time, just throws $500-1,000 whenever it comes up on her mind.
Recently she bought a new condo because her old condo reminded her of her ex. Caveat? She has no job either.
You can't make this shit up. I'm semi-jealous

I'd say she's a 9 to fobs, 8-8.5 to most people. It's hard to refer attractive girls to friends, they only want tall or rich because all their past bfs.
Not good to date, and piping attractive girls are tough.

i guess that's where mikes gf is at, she knows she makes good money so she thinks with just a little discipline she can handle anything.
the thing she doesnt understand yet is like any addiction you have to hit rock bottom before you can fix it.
she has to realize that 40k is a fucking lot unless you're making FU money and it will take an entire lifestyle change for any middle class person to get out of it. | You know, I tend to agree with the thinking that as long as I am making good money, I can climb out of most financial holes that I might get myself into.
But the biggest caveat that goes along with the thinking is -- you need to have utmost control and discipline, and you need to have the decisiveness to exercise that control and discipline when the time calls for it.
I don't remember what (or whether) Mike mentioned how much her gf makes. But for a nurse, a safe, conservative bet is probably at least $120k/yr? Let's say her take home pay at the end of the day is 60% -- so that's $72k.
To me, a $20 - $30k/yr expense should probably be enough to support a bare bones to basic creature comforts life style. That leaves $42 - $52k, which means in theory, the $40k debt could be paid off in a year or less. As long as I am still capable of making good money, is it really that bad to maintain a $40k debt?
The single biggest thing that I would do differently is to not leave that debt on the CC. Instead, I'd transfer it to a low interest loan of some sort to save on debt servicing costs.
For me, a debt that I can pay off within a year is probably the ceiling amount of what I'd be comfortable with. And that means I would consider doing one of two things:
1. maintain the debt at the current level (and continue to enjoy my current lifestyle), or
2. make slight changes to the current lifestyle to reduce expenses and gradually bring the total debt amount to something smaller
Again, the emphasis needs to be control and discipline. When you need to call it quits, you need to call it quits. (This is actually something I eventually came to realize after enough dating -- when you need to call it quits, you need to call it quits.) And when there is a goal you want to / need to reach, you need the decisiveness to put that goal into action.

^^ no way, my nurse friend works a lot of ot but she's over $200. I also know of a old nurse who works regular shifts is still over $110k with barely any ot. They still get holiday premium if their shift falls on a holiday.

-Mark | Full time out of school with shift premiums for a FT rotation is about 85k
Public health would be about 75k
My wife is 8 years in as an RN, with 5 years or so as an LPN and she cracked 100k in early October with no overtime (trust me I wish she would take some)
Top pay scale nurses will easily make 120k in public health and 140k with shift premiums and no ot.

It's all public knowledge, got a friend in health care who makes at least 75k. Go look it up if you're curious.

The ones working at hospitals in this day and age need to be paid the same as cops, even more IMO since they can't carry a gun.

And cause the majority of nurses actually help people instead of the minority, like cops

I'm fairly pro-defund the police for the US and I just *hate* cops like Adam Palmer and I generally hate the police unions but I don't think most cops are bad in Canada (though some generally are bad).
That said, it only takes a very small percentage of a profession to be bad to make the whole profession disreputable especially those professions with a lot of power. A few cops abusing their power is far, far worse than a few teenagers spitting in your McDonald's burger.
