That's exactly how I have been using Windows for years... probably since I started using a resolution higher than 1024x768. It makes no sense whatsoever to run most applications in full screen. Things like photoshop and programming of course, but for web browsing and shit it makes no sense.

After a day of use I'm liking win8 much more guess its all a matter of getting used to it

I heard when you actually do the purchase using the upgrade advisor it prompts for a key. Some ppl get it some don't.

that's so odd; considering i've never received a cd key when purchasing a laptop

weird

maybe those people are getting cd-key requests because their win7 is pirated

No, like I said, it asked me for a key when I used the Canadian site and entered "Other" as the PC model. But when I used the HK site it didn't.

StylinRed 10-27-2012 08:29 PM

ah i see

for me i entered an actual brand and model into the line

ah well at least it still works kinda :)

Gh0stRider 10-27-2012 10:50 PM

WTF is this shit? It's disgusting

3klipze 10-27-2012 10:52 PM

wonder if its possible to run windows 8 RT on my android Asus transformer.

Tim Budong 10-28-2012 12:56 AM

apps that most impressed me on Windows8 so far are

TSN

and this news app called BENTO

Yup, any good sites have content maxed out around 1000px width, just so people still using small monitors can view the sites properly.
I always leave my browser windows smaller, just because sites look so weird when all the content is in the middle, but there's so much "white space" on the sides.

I just went to NCIX today to play around with Windows 8 for a few minutes.

Not as bad as I thought, or as bad as everyone was saying it would be.

I don't need the Start button, and being a PC user that maximizes the full usage of shortcut commands, I adjusted to it pretty quickly.
And the desktop mode is pretty much the same thing. All the shortcuts are the same, so yeah.

I'm actually still on XP, and didn't feel like it was too confusing making this "big leap".
The Charm Bar is there as it is, but it's not something that windows 8 is dependant on to use (which I initially thought it was).

Anyway, I'm due for an upgrade cause my system's 5 years old.
Is there some deal where I can upgrade to Windows 8 from XP for a special deal price?

Just get it here

https://www.windowsupgradeoffer.com/

Use the HK site (possibly others) and you can get the discount without a key.

Wow sweet... I never thought about upgrading to Windows 8 at all... but for $20 bucks, might as well for a more updated OS....even at the full retail price, its still far more reasonable than Windows 7

There would probably less ppl pirate windows if they didn't charge fucking $150+ CAD for OEM version and $250+ CAD for retail!

!SG 10-28-2012 07:33 AM

will update after i get back... wonder if ill have compatibility issues like i did with windows 7.

SkinnyPupp 10-28-2012 07:46 AM

I am 5 minutes in and.. umm it's pretty much the same thing minus a start button. There is a start 'screen' now but I haven't looked at that. The one it gave me after the upgrade is cluttered with stuff.

Need to figure out how to get TweetDeck to work

I will say one thing, it is instantly noticeable how much faster it is. And this is with a 2700K with 16GB ram and an SSD. Win7 was already pretty damn fast.

SkinnyPupp 10-28-2012 07:59 AM

I want my Start button back! :okay:

And apps that make use of that 'snap' feature or whatever it's called. I love the feature, but not when it means having to use fucking BING

SkinnyPupp 10-28-2012 08:18 AM

I don't like that you can only have one program 'snapped' at a time.

StylinRed 10-28-2012 08:47 AM

i like how the search function is integrated into everything

i miss the old start button at times but less and less the more i use win8

i would like some customizability in windows start menu apps like the news app id like to add and remove news sources but it doesn't look like you can

otherwise so far so good

the snap function is great but it would be nicer if i could dictate how much of the screen it takes up

darthchili mentioned Bento a few posts up for news.

Just tried it myself and it will do everything you want it to do. Very very slick app.

SkinnyPupp 10-28-2012 10:45 AM

The music player can't see any of my music :fulloffuck:

Edit: I had to open Windows Media Player, add the folder ot the library (even thought it was already listed) and click "Continue" for a permissions error dialog... kinda fucky

SkinnyPupp 10-28-2012 11:12 AM

In a way it feels like a transitional OS. Like a touch OS tacked on top of normal Windows 7. Looking forward to checking out the performance, but I have reviews to publish first.

I think it might be more suitable for my laptop. I'll try that tomorrow.

604nguyen 10-28-2012 11:16 AM

is there anyone with a shaw email account that managed to sucessfully set up their email on the new mail client??

i cant get it to work, i used the same incoming/outgoing server and port numbers that i used on my phone and windows 7 machine...no luck!

:okay:

Edit, got my key. BTW if you use the en_HK version, you don't even have to enter a Windows 7 key. When I tried using the en-CA version, it didn't accept my old Win7 key.

Yea I'm getting the prompt no matter what I put. Does choosing the en_HK version (or any other country for that matter) effect any settings? I'm assuming it shouldn't since you can change your region in the Region+Language option.

terkan 10-28-2012 12:00 PM

only compatibility issue i have is the usb 3.0 controller driver?? o_O i had to uninstall it for the upgrade

!MiKrofT 10-28-2012 12:16 PM

^weird. I had no issues with the ivy bridge usb3 controller on my laptop. Then again I did do a clean install.

Preemo 10-28-2012 02:14 PM

Yeah same. No issues here with USB 3. One of the strong points in W8 is the native USB 3 drivers/support for it. Try a clean install. Upgrading over an existing Windows install is taboo.
