The regular one plays only regular 3DS games. The Sky3DS+ plays the newer games that take advantage of the N3DS' upgraded processor.

The cheapest way right now is to downgrade it with DSiware + a second hacked 3DS and put on what is called arm9loaderhax. It edits the bootloader of the Nintendo so you can backdoor install games. Will cost you $10 as you need the DSiware game off the eShop to do it.

If you don't have access to a second hacked 3DS, you're going to need to buy Sky3DS.

EDIT: I don't think there is any place in Crystal Mall that does it, but some places in Richmond probably do. I would avoid those because they do a hardmod with soldering (saves time I believe) at the cost of warranty.

So from what I've read online, I think what I am looking for is to mod my 3ds in order to be able to download games for free from the eshop online. It sounds like in order to do that I have to go with arm9loaderhax that you mentioned? So I don't have access to a second hacked 3ds. Is there any local service that can do this for me? craigslist?

You mentioned places in richmond. Do you know of a service or store in richmond that I can bring a 3ds to that can do this?

Thanks!

If you can find a 3DS that has firmware 10.7 and under, it is a lot easier to hack. It's still an involved process, but if you, strictly, follow Plailect's guide it will be able to play all homebrews and backups. No Sky3DS, or similar, required.

I think I will be buying a brand new 3ds. From then, shouldnt be possible to downgrade it to whatever firmware?

Presto 12-02-2016 03:59 PM

It looks like all firmware is downgradable. However, versions 10.7 and lower are a lot easier to downgrade. Brand new New 3DSes, prior to the black and white's release on Black Friday, should be on 10.7 or under firmware.

Ah, yes, forgot that if you get a 3DS under 10.7, it's alot easier to hack without a secondary device.

I've been dealing with a N3DS that came with 11.0 for the past two days. Brain is fried.

I looked at the steps, and even though i have the necessary pieces, I balked at the process for 11.0+ downgrades. :rukidding:

Razor Ramon HG 12-02-2016 04:05 PM

Anything 11.0+ is going to require a DSiware game I think. Ended up having to buy Legends of Exidia from the eShop + load up Cubic Ninja on a Sky3DS to downgrade.

A lot of work, but you understand the process after you do it once.

Mr.Money 12-03-2016 12:37 AM

ummm....i got the homebrew menu going but i dont know what to do how to play 3ds games...grrr.

I've read a lot of sources that refer to this as a guide for hacking the 3ds,

https://3ds.guide/

should I follow this guide?

Presto 12-03-2016 01:10 AM

Yes. Follow that guide. Make sure to follow it exactly, and if there's any hitches, do not continue until you figure out what is wrong.

Mr.Money 12-03-2016 01:12 AM

i got the homebrew menu...do i this next??? https://3ds.guide/updating-a9lh

Mr.Money 12-03-2016 02:03 AM

?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????

Razor Ramon HG 12-03-2016 07:43 PM

Just follow the guide accordingly to your firmware version.

It's hard for me to tell what you what exactly you need to do without knowing what you've done.

Do you guys know if pokemon moon/sun is available after hacking the 3ds? Also, I am thinking of buying a 3ds off craigslist. Found a couple of sellers that have brand new unopened 3ds for under $250. Any risks or dangers that you guys might know about? Thanks.

ceeteezy 12-08-2016 10:42 PM

So I picked up my DS.. I am having trouble connecting it to my wifi network? after some research, I have read that nintendo ds is unable to connect to a WPA internet network and only WEP networks? is this true? I am using telus if that helps. Any suggestions?

Razor Ramon HG 12-08-2016 10:53 PM

The 3DS is very picky about WiFi that's for sure, like it doesn't pick up Wireless-N.

I live in a safe neighbourhood, so my WiFi connections at home are open.

I've never had to test for WEP/WPA.. but the latter is much more secure. Then again, it really depends if someone really wants to hack into your WiFi network to begin with.

ceeteezy 12-08-2016 11:09 PM

This is so weird. I havent seen anyone anyone in this thread complain about the wifi with the 3ds.. I cant be the only one with WPA network on telus. I guess I will have to call telus tmr and try to change to WEP.

BTW, I found a guy on craigslist that will mod your 3ds for 50 bucks for whoever needs to get their 3ds modded,

http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/van/vgm/5910340717.html

decided to take mine to him and save the time/money to do it myself.

Razor Ramon HG 12-08-2016 11:48 PM

You will need a previously modded 3DS in order to do it, so that was probably your best option anyways.

Just log on to your Telus modem to change the security protocol yourself.

Turn on a computer connected to the modem, run ipconfig /all in command prompt, take note of the default gateway, plug default gateway into your web browser, login, and make changes.

I truly hope you didn't pay close to $250 without it being the new XL.

The new 3ds should be closer to $180 from what I have seen (though a lot of people are upselling the Black Friday edition for closer to $200)

Seems like aside from that limited edition release, Nintendo has discontinued the regular "new" 3ds. I do not see them being listed on the web shop.

Yeah, I logged into my telus modem and changed the wifi security settings from WPA to WEP. Works now.
