I like that Tort's gave everyone a pat on the back after the game too. You can't be a huge asshole coach if you don't also reward your players for responding and a job well done or else they just tune you out.

Thats what I love about Torts and hate about AV. Guys arent playing up to snuff : Torts doesnt wait for intermission, called TO and reems them on the bench, immediate response. Av: NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM. Fresh stick, NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM. After a good shift/game, pats on the backs, words of praise, making them feel good. hockey players are just human beings, and respond like anyone else would. Av? NOM NOM NOM CHEW CHEW CHEW. Only thing is that this works well short term but eventually the players will tune it out too.
As long as everything is running well, there is no need to yell and scream and treat these adults like little kids by yellow and poking them and then benching them. But once the team goes in a funk and he uses this card, it will only work so many times before the players learn to tune him out just like what happened to AV and Torts in NY.

Crow was a pretty good coach. Coached the cup wining Avs team and started off well in Vancouver but eventually players tuned him out too.

I think Torts is smarter than Crawford or AV in terms of getting players to play the ways he wants them to play. For example, I remember a game this season where Kassian was benched for an entire third period and had less than 10 minutes of ice time because he was so bloody lazy on the backcheck.

All coaches, including Torts, can control ice time for players, even bench them, to send a stern message in response to a player's laziness or poor performance.

He's not all yelling and screaming as a coach. He knows how to push the right buttons for players with different personalities.
