Just moved to a new place, a condo near Westminster Hwy and Garden City in Richmond. Opted to get Novus with 50down/10up at 54.00 per month for first twelve months. Then it goes to 63.00 month to month after first 12 months. No contract with a fiber optic connection. Every place I called had about a ten day wait for installation. Novus was at my place in two days and there is no modem, they just modify a jack. So far my uploads are 10mb minimum and my wired downloads are at or near 50. Wireless is about half that.

Can't rewind on live tv frequently
Channels freezes

Shaw's response..."have tried rebooting?"

have the same issues with their PACE box as well

Im really getting tired of Shaws equipment and service and paying over $220 a month for tv and internet but i'm also hesitant to go with Telus because it sounds like it's the same :/

This is why shaw stopped using pace, they suck. If you call in and complain that it does not work you will likely get a motorolla replacement.

I was in the same boat as you when I was with shaw. I decided to just jump in with both feet and have been very happy with Telus. I ended up buying my equipment and they have been working with very little issues for 4 years.

The only unresolved issue i've had is about once a month a channel i'm watching will start getting an echo with the audio. This can be resolved by switching the channel and then going back to the original.

Also shaw have the Go Shaw wifi/hotspot and Telus doesn't. As long as you are within Shaw's hotspot you can logon to it and use it for free.

The best PVRs are the DCT 3416. The newer PVRs tend to not last very long. Usually about 1 to 1.5years they start acting up. I deal with this PVRs everyday.

i "think" the Motorola DCT series don't support mpeg HD steams? for example my grey DCT-3416 cannot watch the BC1 news HD channel 216, where as my DCX-3400 works, but then my DCX has that god awful hdd grinding noise if the room is very quiet.

Hondaracer 10-19-2014 06:33 PM

Telus's hardware sucks.

Telus actually has quite a lot of these too, it is just not advertised.

The motortola dct don't support the newer hd channels which suck but still the best box to date. the newer boxes have so much delay when changing channels or using the menu

When I switched to Telus, I thought I was going to be missing the Go Shaw wifi feature.
But with a lot of people having data plan, it somewhat seems redundant, unless your purpose is to prolong battery life by using wifi instead.

I only have 1GB data per month, and I know for today's standard, that's very little. But I barely crack 500mb.
But then again, I have friends who are trying to keep their usage from going over when they have 5GB.
Not sure what you guys do with your phones, but I don't download porn or watch a lot of YouTube on my phone.

down == the speed at which you're downloading from the internet

up == the speed at which you'll be uploading content to the internet.

For your particular usage, you'll be worrying about down speeds for the most part. If you're creating content for twitch and streaming (as opposed to watching streams), then you'll need to worry about upload speeds.

Raid3n 11-09-2014 10:26 PM

if you need upload (streaming to twitch) i would go with telus or novus if you can get it. shaw is still playing catchup with upload speed...

knight604 11-09-2014 10:40 PM

Telus all the way , the only set back is the hardware , who cares when you can bridge it .

umm if u "renew with shaw for 2 years" i assume u signed a contract? how r u able to get off? and if ur getting shitty speeds yd u continue with shaw? if ur using a router have u tried plugging straight up to the modem and test the speeds? maybe its ur settings with ur router?

Sounds like you're stuck on a 2 year contract, so the best thing you can really do is to get your internet bumped up to broadband 50. I'm on bb50 right now and the speeds are excellent.

oh before i had shaw extreme internet. it was awesome. i went to the website and checked out shaw 25 internet. seemed to meet my needs. so i went ahead and sign up for 2 years and got HD cable. the penalty is 15 bucks a month times by how many months you have left.

as for the router settings. i have no clue. not familiar with routers

yah i asked to get bumped up to BB50 but its another 50 bucks per month.
not interested in the price bump ATM

TOPEC 11-10-2014 12:55 PM

ur high speed 25 is the same speed as extreme from way back, 25Mbps down. there shouldnt be a difference in speed, i suspect it has something to do with ur router acting up causing the slow downs and not with actual shaw. easiest way to diagnose the issue is plug something like a laptop or computer straight to the modem bypassing the router and do a speed test. if speedtest comes back at 25mbps then the issue lies within ur router.

guurl 11-11-2014 01:23 AM

shaw go wifi comes in handy when you don't want to go over wifi
but telus internet is better. depends what area you're in though. whether you're close to those boxes. youd be getting suuuuper fast internet.

knight604 11-11-2014 12:08 PM

Im on telus 50, i get like 5.3 or 6.

50mbps = 6.25MBPs so you're pretty much maxing out which is awesome.

knight604 11-11-2014 12:33 PM

Yeah love the new fibre optics.
