Woke up to this ... how did UFC get so irrelevant? Is it their PR machine? Didn't even see anything about a UFC event. Does Covington get a post in Trump's admin?

SkinnyPupp 12-15-2024 11:18 AM

UFC is still as popular as its ever been, ticket prices are insanely high, they charge cities to run shows there, and PPVs still require a monthly subscription on top

I don't get it. Who is watching all these shows with no stars on them?

mikemhg 12-16-2024 07:35 AM

Is it as popular? Do you have access to viewership count? I don't think it is.

I had no idea I was behind 2 events here in Jon Jones :lol

Love to see Colby lose though.

I do actually. UFC prelims on ESPN 2 or FX usually get top ratings on cable after whatever huge sports are going on (like college football and basketball). They are working on a new TV deal that they expect will be even bigger than the current one (which was $1.5 billion and ends after next year)

UFC 310 was one of the lowest gates of the year, but this is at just over $5 million. Highest flyweight main event gate in their history.

They're still doing insane business, and I don't understand it. Is it all just the Trump voters watching?

GLOW 12-30-2024 08:27 AM

i don't follow boxing but friend sent this one over, seemed competitive
Fury vs Usyk

135 title fight was non-stop

main title fight went as expected, do we know why tsuyrkian <-i can't spell it pulled out?

i hope moiccano got paid well to step in on 1 day's notice like that

Arman Tsarukyan withdrew on Friday before weight in. said injured his back.

Jiri vs Jamal was a Good Fight.
Jiri matured alot. He want to fight Alex Pereira for the 3rd time :lol

Merab vs Umar was Good, too. Umar is not ready for 5 Rounds yet.

whitev70r 02-01-2025 09:49 PM

Israel Adesanya lost in a KO, round 2 !! Against a #5 ranked fighter Imavov

GLOW 02-04-2025 08:28 AM

what do you think Isy should do now? at 35 years of age i think he's 1-4 in his last 5?

retire, try to go on another run at the title, move up to 205 (i don't think he should)

GLOW 02-09-2025 02:58 PM

i enjoyed the zhang/suarez 115lb title fight more than the DDP / strickland title fight.

think they're gonna try and do DDP vs khamzhat and maybe weilei vs valentina down the road?

mikemhg 02-12-2025 10:37 AM

Izzy should retire or fight Paulo Costa again, don't really see much else left for him.

He had a great run, but everything ends eventually.

GLOW 02-17-2025 01:43 PM

ya i think it'll be hard/take a lot of time/effort to put together another run.

i think he'd have fun doing karate combat, but i don't think he'd be allowed to.

SkinnyPupp 02-17-2025 02:51 PM

One of the last actual stars of UFC seems to be done Sadge

Soon it'll all be fightbots. Bland tattooed white guys vs bearded Muslims, boring Brazilians, and athletic black Americans. But that works because the promotion is huge, so good for them!

mikemhg 02-17-2025 03:59 PM

Man I was looking at the next few upcoming cards, and I probably recognized 20% of the actual fighters.

Things have certainly changed.

And they still do INSANE business! I get it being a successful niche, but I am still shocked. They're going to get a huge TV deal soon, possibly with Netflix

mikemhg 02-18-2025 10:07 AM

I've become conflicted with UFC as of late.

That last Jones card was so MAGA'd the fucked out that it turned me off. Dana is really trying to ram UFC's political stance onto the viewers now, and its crossed the line, I've heard others make the same comment.

I want my sports to be opaque politically, I don't want to watch Trump carted out to have each fighter kiss the ring and enact performative fellatio on the mic for the damn guy after each fight.

I don't need to watch a state propaganda endeavor when I'm trying to watch dudes punch each other's faces in.

If the UFC continues going in that direction, I'll continue to lost interest.

GLOW 02-23-2025 06:43 PM

such a weird main with cejudo vs song yadong

i thought henry was trying to be strategic but seems like he really had vision issues. dana seemed unhappy with the outcome, not wanting to have anything to do with a rematch even though both were interested

pastarocket 03-08-2025 07:40 PM

What a wheel kick from Ruffy! First round KO!

Looks like there is a new light heavyweight champ. Gaethje also found himself back in the W column.

mikemhg 03-10-2025 10:51 AM

White what happened to our bets, I didn't even know a fight was on last weekend.

Ended up watching it last night, pretty decent card, main event was garbage though.

Instant rematch.

whitev70r 03-10-2025 12:45 PM

I didn't know either ... the PR machine of MMA is quite weak and honestly, couple of times now, I learned about an event afterwards !!

SkinnyPupp 03-15-2025 02:40 PM

Fucking finally, some bad news starts getting out

UFC's success is inexplicable

mikemhg 03-16-2025 11:12 AM

I've been telling you this Skinny, UFC is losing its popularity, you can see it.

Dana even floated the idea recently of getting rid of PPVs entirely, I wouldn't be surprised if we see them sign a contract with a Netflix and become almost DAZN-like.

Their ESPN+ deal ends this year, so we're about to find out how big they are as a TV property. Streamers are looking to add more live/sports content, so they will be highly sought after by default. That would probably be what Dana is talking about yeah. Netflix already works with WWE worldwide, and they stopped doing PPV long ago. (if you didn't know, WWE is merged with UFC)

They recently did a $4 million gate, breaking the Climate Pledge Arena gate record, with a random shitty Fight Night card. So people are still buying these high priced tickets even in non MAGA country.

I dunno man. Maybe they're losing popularity but I don't see it. At least with WWE even if you think the product sucks, they have star power. UFC has boring religious guys with beards and tattoos. Fighters got too good, so only the boring guys make it to the top now.

Manic! 03-16-2025 09:46 PM

PPV views could be down because more people are pirating. I know a bunch of people who have those streaming boxes. A couple of UFC PPV's covers the cost of the box.
