Toyota FT-1, Supra reincarnate?

Now I wonder how the nose will change for production.. doesn't look very pedestrian friendly enough for that.

Toyota FT-1 Concept in Detroit could be the Supra we've been dreaming of

Toyota FT-1 Concept

Toyota has brought its A game to the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, showing off the striking FT-1 Concept. Short for "Future Toyota," the FT-1 is, we're imagining, the supposed Supra Concept we reported on early in December.

Penned by the Calty Design Research team, the FT-1 draws inspirations from the FT-HS and the Lexus LF-LC concepts from 2007 and 2012, respectively. We certainly see a bit of Lexus LF-A in the design, while there's more than a hint of Formula One in the FT-1's pointed nose.

"Our team was heavily influenced by Toyota's sports car past, especially Celica and Supra, and we sought to capture some of that history. It is an aggressive, track-focused sports car concept with a presence that has been amplified for shock and awe," said Alex Shen, Calty's Studio Chief Designer.

The FT-1's interior is what Toyota calls a "place of business," which would be a funny description of a Toyota, if the FT-1 didn't look the way it did. The cabin is snug, while a colored heads-up display adds to the sense that this is more cockpit than cabin.

While it may be a concept, it will be available to drive soon, as Toyota worked with Polyphony Digital to add the FT-1 to Gran Turismo 6. According to the press release, which you can view below, the low-slung concept will be available for download tomorrow. Until then, be sure to peruse our full gallery of live images from the floor of Cobo Hall and the press release below.

are those cooling fans in the nose, or some kind of roadkill cuisinart option?

Mr.Stubbz 01-13-2014 10:51 AM

not a huge fan of the beakish nose i have to say, reminds me of ferrari with the enzo and la ferrari

BoostedBB6 01-13-2014 11:06 AM

Thanks Toyota! Now the MKIV will only increase in value and desirability!

Ever angle but the front looks great...but given the history of Toyota producing killer concepts and production models being so far from the concept I expect disappointment.

I will wait until it's official

Can't wait to drive this car on gt6. The front end looks a lot like an f1 car thanks to the triangle nose.. The rear looks a little viper esque as well..I do hope the production version looks a little more mundane like how the Ft-86 concept turned out

Only thing I'm worried about is the talk of a hybrid system being implemented. Kinda defeats the purpose of bringing the car back unless the car was gas-only because Toyota's hybrid setups are heavy as shit and would earhole the car into some really bad automanual transmission. I'm all game for a high output V8 for something like this, or a scaled back version of the LFA's V10.

Didn't they have a partnership brewing with BMW? Maybe it will have a similar powertrain to the i8?

Up close and personal with the FT-1:

It's nice the F1 nose is a little bit :/ but overall it's nice wonder what the production would look like if it does go that far

doubt this wil be priced like the supra
i'm guessing 90-120K territory to compete with the R8/GT-R

It was around $50k in the States
C-spec was a lot higher for some reason.

As much as it irritates me, I seriously doubt this car is ever going to come out with a manual regardless of what engine/drivetrain system it uses.

FT1 is my new wallpaper... hope they won't change much for the production version... thats if the project make it into production

i agree, if you look at pictures of the interior it doesn't look like it was designed with a stick even slightly in mind. surely they would be hyping the stick shift as well if it was going to be an option

also i cant be the only one who hates the steering wheel in this car, everything else looks great, but the wheel screams rice

NKC ONE 01-13-2014 10:26 PM

Looks like an RX7 / Viper hybrid and made by Toyota...LOVE IT!!!
