Holy fuck you could get like 4 5.0 longblocks for that

EDub_ 03-31-2014 07:11 PM

Yea that era of Bmw is showing their age in terms of smaller issues. Vanos, Pixels, ABS module, speed sensors..

Phil@rise 03-31-2014 07:38 PM

that engine is also notorious for burning oil due to separator issues

why would you want a 15 year old navigation system? its going to have a 3" screen and be completely useless

Ha ha, Yeah, we didn't half-ass anything and replaced things like the water pump and oil separator while everything was open so that was a bit extra.

But just the timing chain/ guides kit was $1300 USD + tax + shipping.

I thank god everyday that I have an inline 6

zyzzz 03-31-2014 10:14 PM

My dad used to own one for about 2 years, didn't have a single problem the whole time other than having to replace the pixels and the passenger window motor guess we got lucky and got a good e38, but anyways, I posted here because I want to get one for myself not have a bunch of people tell me not to buy one and I am still not going to change my mind. I have been around cars my whole life and know quite a bit for my age (16). I have done 2 motor swaps, one in a Mazda b2200 and another in a 240sx, I have also done a complete restoration with my neighbor on his Triumph Spitfire and am currently doing one on my dads 1952 dodge regent, its almost done. I love working on cars and fixing them and for my age i am pretty good at it, with time comes knowledge and I am still learning. And yea that V12 Is a really nice car I'd love to own it but sadly it is out of my price range :(

BY THE WAY! I planned on parking the car on my driveway and not driving it until I replaced the timing chain guides no matter how good their condition is.

Haters gonna hate. http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-E38-E39-Z8-Timing-Chain-Rails-Guide-KIT-3pc-GENUINE-OEM-1-year-Warranty-/371023892638?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5662bf509e&vxp=mtr

New to rev scene idk why my link turned into a picture, 300$ shipped OEM BMW Timing chain guide kit lmao 2000$ my ass.

fliptuner 03-31-2014 11:29 PM

Did you even click his link to see what's included?

He also said he replaced other parts while it was apart, to avoid having to take that same things apart twice. These are things that come with experience and taking advice from people who've already been there/done that.

But if you insist....

I think no one has anything against the car itself.

You basically asked for advice on an internet car forum, and several members with experience on that model gave their input and you basically told them they were wrong. A few other people gave you advice on owning a first car and you told them they were wrong.

Of course, you can go ahead and do your own thing, but I hope you realize other people are just telling you from experience what is going to happen.

This doesn't even work here. We are not hating on you, we are trying to inform you that maybe your choice in vehicle is not completely thought out. Were trying to help.

If we wanted to hate there are about 10 other things you have posted that I am sure the members here could have pulled you apart limb by limb for.

Spoiler!

^that would be hating.

I work with a guy who was a BMW tech, and when I said E38 chassis the only way to describe his face was this.
:heckno:

But I get it, I tried to run a R129 Mercedes on a school/part time job situation. I was in love with it, but I didn't have much money to eat or do anything else during the day, however trade off is I learned tons of DIY. I will own one again..........

Typical dumbass kid who won't learn anything until he fucks it up and destroys his wallet. I hope he remembers this thread in 5 years and realizes how stupid he is/was.

even if that's the case...so what? When I purchased my first BMW (an 86 325es) everyone said I was stupid for purchasing a BMW (after years of VW's, Mazdas etc).

Turned out to be one of the best cars I've ever owned. Learned lots about cars and myself (what I do and don't like too).

I agree, fun isn't always sensible

maxx 04-01-2014 03:40 PM

i think its a sick car, especially in white with some alpina or hamann wheels. check out cali and oregon craiglist. maintenance may be a bitch, but fuck it, you'll be rolling in one of the best looking cars BMW ever made inside and out.

It wasn't your first car though, was it? So you already had some idea of maintenance costs and shit like that. How many times have you heard the tale of a kid who buys a high end car as their first vehicle that they can barely afford to purchase, then when the expensive maintenance rolls around they can't afford it so they cheap out and skip maintenance work or buy shoddy parts and end up with a trashed car.

StanleyR 04-01-2014 07:42 PM

I agree with that.

I suppose it'll be a learning experience for OP, with whatever car he buys

zyzzz 04-01-2014 08:46 PM

I never asked for anyones advice, I asked if anyone was selling a bmw 740I. This is too funny, I know the cars are notorious for breaking and I am okay with that, like I said I like to fix cars and I dont mind spending all my money on it because I AM STILL 16 NOT IN MY 20'S LIVING ALONE PAYING BILLS. I don't know why everyone assumes im some broke motherfucker.

fliptuner 04-01-2014 08:53 PM

Why post in a discussion forum then?
