If you're not some "broke mother fucker" then how is a 11k car out of your price range? You def don't have enough experience or pocket to handle such a project. You need a reality check. Just because you can afford a 6k car doesn't mean you can afford all the shit that comes with it. That's what everyone here is trying to tell you.

No one here even knows you, why the hell would they care if you went broke. It's funny you try to help someone and then get told you're the idiot. No one here can tell you what to do... You posted on a public DISCUSSION forum and people are giving you feedback. Goodluck

OP, here's some good advice. Whether or not you take it is your choice, but just remember this; the people giving you advice aren't kids like you wanting to look cool in a "BMW", they're adults (mostly :troll:) who've lived and learned when it comes to the entire process of ownership of an automobile.

If your budget is $6,000 i'm making the assumption you're basically broke. Is that me taking a shot at you, is that me being an asshole? Fuck no. You're 16, you're broke. I was 16, i was broke, most people giving you advice were broke at 16. All we're trying to say is for $6,000 there are many cars that are more realistic for you to own.

If you wanted my suggestions, i'd pick up something for $3000-4000 and use the other $2000 to put the car in near perfect operating condition. Perhaps a late 90's or early 2000's Civic, perhaps a Corolla. Will it suck driving a POS? Yes, from experience it does, but it's part of being so young. Deal with it.

This...

I mean if you can't afford the 12k for that nice example then you are going to end up with a ratbagged version for about 6 grand.

Tack on about 3000+ for insurance given that you are a new driver, 2000 for gas the first year.

So that is 11000 before we even start talking about maintenance and parts because you bought such a cheap example of an E38. Even if we say conservatively another 2 grand here. You just blew your budget straight into the shitter.

Go get a reality check, maybe ask your parents to give you one (mine usually came with a healthy smack to the head). Cause you are living in a dream world.

Or maybe we are all wrong, and this one little snot nosed kid who is some sort of nefarious surrey drug dealer has figured out the key to the world and were all gonna look like real idiots soon. :fuckthatshit:

To be fair, *if* you DIY, you can overhaul engine/cooling system for about $2k. $3k if you get the Zionsville setup, so you don't have to deal with the exploding fan.

After that's done, the only thing to worry about is the tranny, which goes at ~175k miles, on average. There's 5HP24s available all over for around $500.

I mean, it's not cheap, but he feasibly could pick up a decent E38 for $5000, throw another 3k into it and have a car that's somewhat reliable. Other than the timing guide issue and a blown rad hose, I had no real issues with mine.

In OP's place, I'd go check out the 2000 740 that's up for sale in Richmond with busted guides (I think it's a blk/blk shorty sport), offer up $1000 cash if the engine hasn't bent a valve or something, fix it up and have a decent E38 for less than $3k. Not counting the entire week of labor taking it apart and putting it back together :)

This was my FIRST car, I took that picture probably within 2 minutes of owning it. I dreamed about having one ever since I was 7 and watched a SL fly past me in Europe. So guess how excited I was 10 years later when I got a AMG for my budget.

https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/...6_191416_n.jpg

I ended up broke as hell, and eventually I switched it for this.

A Tamiya model (not yet done!) someone made for me which was exactly what mine looked like when I got rid of it. Now that it lives on my desk, I don't worry about 2,000-7,420 dollar repairs. I learned a few things, tons of DIY, Mercedes parts catalogs, and that I hated my dream car more than anything in real life as it was always broken.

Oh well, you'll learn, only advice I can give you is buy a model and admire it till you can truly afford it. I'm not talking out of my ass, I have experience.

Like I said, kids will never listen to advice, they just have to fuck it up for themselves. IMO never buy a car you can barely afford to get (since you'll be buying the cheapest, shittiest example of it) and never spend more than 70-75% of your budget on the car itself. And that budget is after you factor in insurance, unless you have a decent job and can do month to month. I know of 3 people right now who blew their entire budget to just barely get the car they wanted, only to have unexpected issues come up that they can't afford to fix so now they're parked. And one of those is a 16 year old hotshot like the OP.

Mad props dude, everyone grows from a money pit

EDub_ 04-02-2014 06:42 PM

I don't think doing an engine swap on an s13 will prepare you for the electronic hell/meltdown you will face owning an e38. Just sayin'

Whos thanking you? What was the point of posting these anime covered bmws?

vitaminG 04-02-2014 08:04 PM

what was the point of reposting them dipshit?

Galactic_Phantom 04-02-2014 08:08 PM

My bad. I'm a noob :(

westopher 04-02-2014 08:28 PM

My good friend who is a machinist that lives in edmonton making a solid 70k sold his e38 because he couldn't handle the maintenance. Granted, he has bills, but his e38 basically eclipsed them all. He's not much of a wrench turner, but on an e38, even bmw techs get pretty angry. Remember to save 80 bucks a month for a bus pass.

this thread is a joke.

My e34 was my first car. I love it. Do I regret it? no.. but as much as I love BMW's I don't recommend them to anyone unless they can pony up the maintenance. My car has cost thousands in maintenance. Gotta pay to play.

Multiply the service costs of an e34 by 63,238x and you will have a good thought of what an e38 costs to run. Then add an exponent of 3 if you want to know how an e65 is.

skylinergtr 04-06-2014 08:37 PM

e65's are stupid.

I may be almost in the E38 games. I know my BMWs... I've had my e34 for over 7 years. Hasn't been best of luck car for me, but I still love it. I have somewhere between $20,000-30,000 in maintenance for it and I do work myself. Its still an old BMW at the end of the car. My craziness increased buying an R129 Mercedes and an E39 540i project that needs a timing chain.

westopher 04-06-2014 08:42 PM

Lol couldn't say it better about e65s. Just stupid, terrible cars.

zyzzz 04-07-2014 10:25 PM

Just an update, Bought one, already put about 800 km's on it driving it on the weekend, not a single problem. absolutely loving it. I am prepared for things to break and im just waiting on em so I can learn more about the car. guess im gonna lean from my mistakes ! Thanks for all the negative feedback everyone!

Gotta sell those horrid rims and put some style 37's on asap

MindBomber 04-07-2014 10:39 PM

I'd stick with those wheels. I think they really suit the rat bagged, whalley rich look of that seven series.
