You think, why would I pay 8500 for a old 3 series. Then you see E30 going for 15k. And what else from the early to mid 2000's is good? Toyota 2ZZ XRS/GTS? A decent Celica GTS would be 6k at least. A RSX? 4-5k for one that's not ratty as hell, minimal rust, more for a Type S. Audi S4? You aren't getting one below 10, Miatas are 10 as well for one that's not already broken into 5 different places or it's a plain jane one that has no LSD and a early 5sp.

JDMDreams 04-10-2025 09:18 AM

Well the thing with BMW is they kept making them. It's not like it was some last of the line car. You can get manual e90, 1 series and the ones after. Same with Miata, there's newer and better ones available. Same with Audi. It's not like they went rsx or Celica where they became discontinued.

headhunt3r 04-10-2025 09:33 AM

New RSX is just around the corner

Sometimes new isn't better. I like the interior of the NC Miata more than the ND, for example. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

AstulzerRZD 04-10-2025 09:33 AM

What really gets me is that you end up dumping 10-15k in maintenance on the older BMWs.
What do you get to show for it?

IMO if you were gonna have to do the fuel, water pumps, cooling system, etc.
Might as well do upgrades on an N54/55 car and get rewarded with 5-800hp.
OR, get the M car and have a special motor.

They kept making the 3 series just like Lexus kept making the IS, but I think there's a pretty big difference in the driving experience between the generations of each that were available in 2004 vs 2010. They're also just crossing into the age where they become classics, where the prices only go up and clean ones only get more rare. I'd love to try an E46 before they get too old but I have too many vehicles as is lol.

E46 does have more flow but IMO E90 still feels very rewarding and mechanical to drive.
F30 and G20 can't be redeemed - even in RWD, sport package, summer tire spec.
Autocrossing G20 M340i on PS4S had close to 0 feel.

If you want the softly sprung, playful feel of E46/90, a Giulia's your best bet.

Sounds like I don't even have to reply. RZD covered most of it haha. Good to see my constant word vomitting about E46s has stuck

Aren't the E90s like 300lbs+ heavier with the same power though?

For me it's kind of a moot point since I don't like the looks of the E90 anyways. At the end of the day it's hard to get excited about a car you find dreary to look at.

AstulzerRZD 04-10-2025 12:28 PM

It’s like 120lbs or so for the enthusiast 2 door spec - e46 ZHP is 3415 or so and the E92 330 w/ sport pack is 3460.

335is with N54 is 3580-3610.

Qmx323 04-10-2025 12:42 PM

Very tempted by that blue 330CI.

I find that ZHP/ZAM is either in the $14-15K+ for that KM/Condition, and you still don't get LSD in ZHP, although the extra 10~ HP is appreciated lol :lawl:

I've read/heard that E46's rattle inside a lot though, that'd be a no-go for me lol

JDMDreams 04-10-2025 12:55 PM

All old German cars rattle, unless you have Lexus

68style 04-10-2025 12:58 PM

Ah the famous German Lexus... wait what?

bcrdukes 04-10-2025 01:11 PM

Error 404. Internet just broke.

The blue one looks super clean—seems like an easy car to enjoy.

The Alcantara, bumpers, and seats on the ZHP cars are nice touches ... whether it's worth the cost is very personal.

But honestly, from a driving perspective, I don’t think the ZHP makes a huge difference anymore. At this point, stuff like worn bushings, tired shocks, or a dry shifter has way more impact than a 300 RPM redline bump or slightly quicker rack.

When I had an S2000, I was shocked how different the same car could feel—some were super tight, others felt totally soggy.

XTC_604_DKNY 04-10-2025 02:51 PM

so out of curiousity....what would a 1 owner 6spd 330ci with 70,000KM and a supercharger go for in this market?

JDMDreams 04-10-2025 03:43 PM

$9000 and a case of beers. Jk depends what charger, too modded ones are kinda hard to sell though.

Qmx323 04-10-2025 04:02 PM

lolol his last post was two years ago almost on the day

but I guess if I ever decide to sell, I'll post it here first

Yeah this one looks like the most desirable spec with hotter cams, higher redline,.
Can tell because of the alcantara interior.

E46 wise, Canada got
1) sport pack (the blue one)
2) M Sport (desirable bumpers and visuals but no cam/exhaust/redline bump)
3) M Sport Performance (which this one is)

The maintenance on this one is super sus.
They replaced ZHP damper with Bilstein B4 daily bullshit, raising the ride height compared to stock.
It should’ve gotten B8 (Performance Plus, lowered); 500 CAD difference.

Probably has another 10k of deferred maintenance:
VANOS & tensioner, all mounts, cooling & water pump, trailing arms, driveshaft stuff, DISA/PCV/subframe

Parts on all of these things would cost far less than 10K (~more like $2K) if you can turn a wrench.

The subframe is a 50/50 gamble for sure, particularly for manual cars.

ZHP dampers are no different than the standard Sachs sport suspension. The ZHP didn't come with better springs or struts/shocks than any other E46 that was equipped with a sport suspension from the factory. Bilstein makes a B4 front strut for cars with stock sport springs.

I replaced my front struts this off-season and the biggest difference was my old strut mount vs new (Sachs OE). The old strut mount was absolutely flattened after 24 years.
