Hmm... this one seems really good on paper!

2001 Porsche 996 MT

http://images.craigslist.org/00V0V_6...qe_600x450.jpg

- 2001 Porsche 996
- $20k
- 92k km
- new clutch, LN Engineering IMS bearing upgrade and rear main seal at 85k
- water pump replace at most recent service
- no accident
- LSD -- I thought 996 didn't have LSDs from the factory...

Westopher, maybe?

^^ Good price, strange ad. It will be really interesting to see some fresh pics, and I always feel better if they at least show that they are BC plates even if the numbers are shop'd out.

There are some LSD equipped 996's, but I think only C2's. It's hard to tell, but that looks like a C4 on the rear pic. if it's a PSM car (stability control as stated) porsche says you don't need an LSD. You could spec a traction delete, LSD coupe.

I'd go see it to establish what kind of owner they are. Some people just don't know exactly what they have, and the options are confusing. It is however as simple as checking the printed option codes in the front trunk.

IMS, fresh clutch, seals and waterpump is a bunch of expensive work. Figure ~4k at an indy. 20k starts to look pretty good. Finding out which shop did the work will also tell you about the owner's maintenance habits.

These things are down 20% (or lower) than I've ever seen them. It's a great time to pick one up (ask me how I know!)

99's are the last of the "lightweight" 996's.
00 and newer come with the PSM while 99's do not have it. I also believe 99 is the last year of the drive by cable. 00 and newer are drive by wire.
I believe you can get an LSD with the car if you ordered the M030 package.

Traum, Uncle Arnold would be the best person to ask since he has a 99.

The feels of not being able to buy something you want because you don't have enough money :okay:

I don't like this feels.

Fake ad, reverse image searched. That car is from Cali.

Original photo is from a thread about CD changer on Rennlist. lowside67 replied to that thread in 2006! (Maybe it's him lol jk)

The ad does indicate proper photos will follow tomorrow. Perhaps prudent to give the seller another 24-36 hrs before jumping to a conclusion.

The description references Litronics which the ripped (and hopefully temporary) photos do not have.

If PPI is good, $20K is a good price.

That said, I'd be concerned about the chains + tensioners.

Going into this thread gives me such conflicting feelings.

One, I'm happy and excited to see all the good deals and sexy cars I would want to get.

:alonehappy:

Two, I'm sad and depressed that I won't likely be able to get any of them.

:alone:

You can't change the IMS bearing without locking the camshafts, and you can't lock the camshafts if they're deflected too far by a stretched and tired chain.

There are lots of higher mile 996's around. If this one has had open heart surgery within the last 10k kms I'd say it's good to go.

Of course get a PPI - it will tell you lots of things about these cars. They always find enough to negotiate the price down a bit. But if the doomsday engine scenario is scary to anyone as a buyer, get something else. These are not for you if you think they won't cost $$$ to maintain and repair as needed.

I hate fake pics, and the traction control/LSD is dodgy, but there is time for redemption. I don't like wasting legit seller's time, but I'm tempted to go see how this one stacks up to mine to get a market valuation.

swfk 03-10-2015 08:09 AM

The silver 996 ad is way too similar to the black one posted a while back.

- 90k kms similar to the black 996
- it just had to be cheaper, at $20k flat

trollguy 03-10-2015 08:23 AM

2015 - the yr everyone on RS buys a heavily depreciated 996

Came up again a few months later and never got a reply from the seller and now it's back up. It was originally on sale with less mileage... I believe it was 25000-27000 km at the time but same price.

jasonturbo 03-10-2015 09:46 AM

FWIW, that 997 GT3RS sold to an American this morning, I called at 8AM after convincing myself it was a good idea.. but it was too late. It was on the market for less than two business days.

westopher 03-10-2015 09:57 AM

Not surprised. He basically got his RS for 95 fucking thousand dollars. I knew Harper was ruining Canada, but now that he's ruined Canadian citizens prospects of owning porsches he has gone too far!!

Goddamn exchange rate woes are really pissing me off these days. Americans are now driving up the prices of our own cars now. This summer won't be pretty for toy purchases, that's for sure. Fuck.

It was mentioned earlier a few pages back, there's a dent on the pinch weld you might want to worry about. Some other things as well
