Not only that, but trying to fight it created more publicity and more media attention.

Imagine if they wont it a year ago and claimed it right away. Nobody would've cared. Now everyone is talking about it.

Ehh..if it was me I would've waited til I sorted out everything I had here so I can bounce immediately when I get it. Then put it in a bank and hop on a flight and hide for a while to avoid harassment

I think some provinces like Saskatchewan don't take pictures of winners for security reasons.

They have the same rules as here, remember it's a Canada Wide Lottery not Province specific.

A Metro Vancouver man has filed a lawsuit claiming the $50 million lottery jackpot paid out last week actually belongs to him.
The winners of the March 2014 draw were a mystery for 21 months before the B.C. Lottery Corporation handed the prize to Langley residents Friedrich Mayrhofer and his family last Tuesday.
Officials said the reason for the delay was that the Mayrhofers had tried to claim the prize anonymously through a trust, something the BCLC ultimately determined couldn’t be allowed for the sake of transparency.

But now, a Maple Ridge man is alleging the prize is rightfully his, and he’s launched a lawsuit against the lottery corporation in B.C. Supreme Court to get it.
George Wilson-Tagoe said he lost his ticket for that March 2014 draw shortly after purchasing it, possibly by throwing it into the trash by accident, but had scanned the numbers first.
When the winning numbers were drawn, Wilson-Tagoe claims he recognized the immediately.
He said he phoned the BCLC to explain his situation, told them when and where he bought the ticket, but was told it was a loser – and he’s been suspicious ever since.
“Certain employees of BCLC and their cohorts conspired to steal his winning Lotto Max ticket worth $50,000,000 and 21 months of interest,” his suit claims.
Wilson-Tagoe also said he bought the ticket at a gas station. According to lottery officials, the winning ticket claimed by the Mayrhofers was purchased at a Shoppers Drug Mart.
The BCLC said it will be filing a statement of defence in the case, and insists the Mayrhofers only received their cheque following a lengthy and exhaustive investigation.

Sounds like the dude lost his marbles.

So he buys a ticket, throws it away and is claiming it's his?

He buys a ticket, apparently scans it (and magically remembers the numbers), throws it away, and then after a winner was announced, claims and the ticket he threw away is the winner.

This would involve someone from the winning party to actually pick up this lost ticket. But the thing is, if someone throws something away in a garbage can and it is in public property, doesn't that person release all ownership of said item?

Nabatron 12-24-2015 07:44 PM

As my mom says when playing the lottery sign the ticket once you get it! If he didnt sign the ticket and well threw it away well your shit out of luck then!

JackAss 12-24-2015 07:53 PM

Not only that... He claims he got the ticket from gas station while the actual winner got it from SDM...

fliptuner 12-24-2015 09:12 PM

I hope he loses his ass in lawyer fees

MG1 12-24-2015 09:52 PM

I sign my tickets as soon as I have it in my hands. I also buy the tickets from the same place every week.

When did BC become the 51st state?

MG1 12-24-2015 10:10 PM

Yup, we Canadians use Cheque.

In fact, I believe cheque is used everywhere English is used except in 'murica.

"ooooooh............ that was one helluva body cheque"....... hee hee

underscore 12-24-2015 11:19 PM

Depends if he lost it or tossed it out.

Also that article says check in one spot and cheque in another, that's even worse than just getting it wrong.

Like my grandma. She believed in and worshiped as many religions and gods as she could. Her reasoning was, when she dies she's covered.

Reminds me of the story where a Teacher in a public school dropped her Tim Hortons in the trash can And the Garbage Picker went to take it out and check the cup himself....WON A SUV & Teacher took him to court over it...."HEY THATS MINE!"
