Stamkos is saying that McDavid is better as a rookie than when he first played in the NHL.

-starting a hockey pool draft with buddies soon. It's a keeper league which means all GMs will keep their best players. Each GM must draft a rookie.

If McDavid is available, should I draft him or go after Eichel? :considered:

Stamkos: McDavid better than me - Article - TSN

Steven Stamkos scored 51 goals and netted 95 points as a 19 year old in the NHL. He was a No. 1 overall pick. He practically bathed in lofty expectations - and understands the unique pressure associated better than just about anyone.
But even Stamkos did not hesitate on Tuesday when asked about The Next One in Connor McDavid.

“This guy is a special kid,” the Tampa Bay Lightning star told ESPN.com. “I think he’s better than me right now. I wouldn’t have a second thought on saying that.”

The bar was already sky high for McDavid, Edmonton’s top pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and hockey’s consensus top prospect since Sidney Crosby. Stamkos nudged it a little bit higher at the NHL’s annual media tour in Toronto, where Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask picked Stamkos to be the 2016 Hart Trophy winner.

Stamkos, 25, is the only player in the last seven seasons to reach the 60-goal plateau. He guided the Lightning to the first Stanley Cup final appearance in more than a decade in June.

Where exactly will McDavid fit in among the NHL’s elite in his rookie season? How much of an impact will he make on the league and the Oilers?

Crosby lived up to the hype in 2005-06 with 102 points as an 18 year old. He did not win the Calder Trophy as top rookie - that went to Alex Ovechkin, who had 106 points as a 20 year old - and the Penguins finished last in the Atlantic division with 58 points.

Projections for McDavid’s long anticipated rookie season are varied. TSN’s Top 50 list, as voted on by a panel of media and league executives, will debut on Sept. 30 (TSN, 7:30 pm ET) . This much can be revealed: McDavid made the cut.

McDavid is expected to be in the Oilers' lineup for the Young Stars Classic this week in Penticton, BC, when Edmonton's rookies face off against Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg.

Stamkos is confident McDavid will have a better 18-year-old campaign than he did.

“Oh, he’s way better,” Stamkos said Tuesday. “He is good. The best I’ve seen for a player that age.”

Stamkos collected 23 goals and 23 assists for 46 points in a disastrous 2008-09 for the Lightning, where he didn’t average 15 minutes per night for coaches Barry Melrose or Rick Tocchet. He responded with three consecutive 90-point seasons - and twice broke the 50-goal mark.

At the very least, Stamkos took the heat off his own contract talks on Tuesday. He is entering the final year of a five-year, $37.5-million deal after general manager Steve Yzerman called a Stamkos extension his “No. 1 priority” of the summer. The two sides do not appear to be any closer to a new deal with training camps set to open on Sept. 17 and a season ripe with a contract distraction looming ahead.

“It’s total speculation, because you never know when things can change,” Stamkos later said of his contract talks. “For me, it’s about not letting it be a distraction, which really it hasn’t been for me. You know what? It’s not something that bugs me … I’m the captain of the team. We just had a great year. You have to put that stuff aside … I think there’s going to be ongoing discussions for sure and we’ll see what happens.”

You'd have to be crazy to pick Eichel over McDavid.

6o4__boi 09-08-2015 12:24 PM

I don't know about you but it's crazy enough that it might just be profitable.
Who knows...Oilers have always found new and different ways to fuck things up
Maybe this is the year they fuck up a generational talent.

I'd honestly be tempted to put money on Eichel finishing the season with more points than McDavid

Yeah, I'm going to draft McDavid if he's available by the time it's my turn to draft a player.

These are the players that are in the keeper positions for my team: Stamkos, Hornqvist, Kevin Shattenkirk and Carey Price.

Ch28 09-08-2015 12:34 PM

#1 overall pick in our pool will be McDavid

Ronin 09-08-2015 12:55 PM

I think Edmonton will finally make some progress this year. They won't be amazing but the Penguins and Blackhawks weren't amazing the first year they had Crosby or Toews/Kane either. Firing or demoting the old boys club in Edmonton and bringing in proven guys with front office backgrounds will be a good change for the Oilers.

My keepers: Duchene, Hall, Subban, Okposo, Lundqvist.

Trying to decide on Wheeler, Monahan or Saad as my last keeper player.

I have the #1 pick so I'll be adding McDavid.

Lol Stamkos wasn't that great coming into the NHL..highly touted and huge numbers in junior but he was no where near where mcdavid is now

Blame Barry Melrose

the moment Melrose was fired, his production skyrocketed

While I agree that Edmonton might have a way to fuck things up (I hope not!), I like to use poker analogy.

Sometimes you have a really sick hand like a full house, and there's a shit ton of money in the pot already.
The other guy goes all-in... You just have to make the call because it's the correct play, even if there's a chance you might get a "bad beat."

Sometimes, you just gotta make the correct call, just because.

FWIW, it will psychologically fuck you up less if you lose with McDavid, than to lose with Eichel.
If McDavid didn't pan out, at least a lot of other people will share the feels with you.
While if you lost with Eichel, everyone will be laughing in your face.

Hondaracer 09-09-2015 05:35 AM

Any of you guys buy the NHL gamecenter? If so is there a best time to buy it/best method?

Don't have cable anymore only shaw internet so will either be buying it through shaw or directly from the Game Center site I would imagine?

Jmac 09-09-2015 06:45 AM

I may be mistaken, but I think Shaw only sells Centre Ice. GCL has to go directly through the NHL.

Tim Budong 09-09-2015 06:50 AM

id assume rogers will have some sorta promo again
GCL going throug MLBAM except in Canada

reddit always seems to have coupons n such when season starts

i don't think it'll affect me much if i lost with Eichel...i might be a little sad about losing the money more than anything.

But if I won with Eichel tho... $.$
and the bragging rights and told you so's would be pretty a pretty good risk to take. I wouldn't mind everyone laughing in my face if I lost with Eichel haha.

Or I can just bet on em both on different things.
Can't remember what list it was but do they really project no one getting more than a 100 pts this year? :heckno:

Last year I was able to get it for $75 by using Hola to change my location to somewhere in Russia lol. Going to wait and see if something similar pops up this year.

Even as a Sabres fan and already rocking my Eichel jersey around town, I would pick McDavid over Eichel, the only thing that might work in Eichel's favor at least for their rookie years is that he will have a easier time transitioning to playing against men having played in NCAA and World Championships vs men and having excelled. Eichel has always been a bit of a athletic/gym freak and has even put on 10lbs of muscle since the draft. It could be possible McDavid could have a tougher transition at first adapting to playing against men and physically stronger players as opposed to teenagers in juniors, but I'm sure McDavid will be fine and adapt, so take McDavid, especially in a keeper pool.

With McDavid, you know he will be playing on the top line so he will be getting lots of ice time including PP time.
Edmonton will do everything they can to try to squeeze as much juice from him right away.

I'm not totally convinced Buffalo will do the same with Eichel.

As for Melrose and Stamkos, I remember they wanted to ease him into the league which meant not playing him as much and in certain situations to help him succeed.
Look at Brule. They tried to rush him along and that may have hurt his development. Same goes with Kyle Turris when Arizonia tried to rush him along too soon.
