I have to be the only one that doesn't like Rivian.

On every suspension, their steering is hyper active and you feel EVERY bump in the road - they're exhausting to drive for more than 20 minutes.

Do they even want an EV? Almost better off just to get a used ES instead (I'm sounding like Hobz)

That's why I need to test drive. The X3 was good around town as well but can be a little twitchy on the highway

Never had an EV before? Toyota bz4X used.

If they're anything like my parents they'll hate the Tesla and the controls and how they work. Lack of instrument panel, door release button... it's all going to be grounds for complaints from them lol.

Always been intrigued by the Model S, free supercharging, price point is pretty good on those. I wonder why so many Model S has free supercharging, was it something Tesla used to incentivize people to buy?

Eg. this one - $20K for a 2015 85D, clean, 123K kms. https://www.facebook.com/share/16yLXd8MCQ/

Or this - $18.5K, 2015 85D, clean, just over 100K kms - https://www.facebook.com/share/16yLXd8MCQ/

I don't remember when they ran the free SC up to, but I do know they only got rid of it after they released the Model 3 as it was not going to be sustainable moving forward.

I personally won't suggest getting a Model S or really any old Tesla in general as I don't think they are well made cars and not really made to last. Tons of issues on earlier vehicles and you'll just have to keep fixing things.

Yes used to be a Tesla incentive to buy their cars. Model S have a lot of hardware that literally aging out or dying - look up eMMC issues or yellow banding/screen delamination issues, which then disables the car. So be careful with buying one.

What are their driving habits like? i.e. How much do they drive per day on average and can they charge at home (even on 110v)? I drive around 1500km / month and my 50-60km EV range covers 85-95% of my monthly driving needs (I top up at home with a 110v outlet).

That's how my parents ended up with one of the triplets

+1 on the Toyota bz4x - I see a few that'll be slightly over $30k after tax.

If your in-laws want to stick strictly to under $30k and don't care for brand perception, MY2020+ Kia Soul EVs are great everyday cars that hover around low $20k pre-tax now. I loved mine and my parents loved the higher ride height, good visibility, and practicality.

Ultimately the older we get, the less we give a shit about performance and what not.

It has to be quiet, comfortable and reliable. Aka the hallmark of old school lexus. unfortunately that ship has sailed, so i dont even know what brand has those 3 key qualities nowadays.

69style just rode with me in my ES to new west and he can attest to how that garbage can of a car, thats 16 years old, doesnt make a peep even over rough, broken surfaces of new west. Its comfortable too, almost too comfortable as you could easily fall asleep and die. 16 years and not a single issue with anything on the car. It aint worth shit nowadays as you can pick one up for 10-15k, but im going to drive it into the ground.

Isn't bz4x shit cuz they did such a half assed job, no heat pump, slow charge etc, shit interior. Same with kia soul no battery heat management like the leaf so it wears down very quickly.

I would try to get a 17+ Tesla, a lot of owners upgraded stuff and they still have free super charging.

The tech is so easy, even my none tech dad loves it once you get used to it, and even no English China people easily gets used to the tech. They can sit in heat, listen to radio all day, when they sit around in the car running earnings or wait to pick up people. Don't have to pay for gas, save ,$$$, just go home and plug it in. Easy and perfect for cheap Asians.

I think it was the initial version of the bZ4x that made them undesirable. They were no match for the competition (at the time). I'm unsure of how they are today.

My in-laws place is 2 blocks down from a supercharger station, so they were floored when i told them the older model s's offer free charging. Given that they drive from Burnaby to Richmond almost daily, it seems like the free charging alone could account for 4-5k in 'gas savings' per year.

I've test driven a Toyota bZ4X before, and I understand roastpuff's recommendation in this case. Aside from the difference between charging and filling up with gas, the car honestly just feels, drives, and behaves like any other boring a$$ Toyota. For non-car people who are already used to driving Toyotas, and don't plan on taking it out for road trips, it is honestly a fairly solid recommendation.

Of course, the only caveat is -- you gotta have a reliable way of charging the car. If the owners have a garage, then the problem is 90% resolved -- it'll probably work well enough even with just L1 charging -- you just have to remember to charge it every time you come home.

Sorry, it's just odd for roastpuff to recommend a Toyota. It's out of character for him and most people on this forum given the general sentiment towards Toyota.

bz4x i think can be appetizing if it is used & cheap. i've seen dealers list them at like $25k-ish before. at that price could be worth it.

now i see a few for $35k, at that price i wouldn't be interested.
i know a few ppl with it, they seem to like it, but then again i think it was a huge step up from whatever they were driving before (older junky car)

Homophobic labels aside, it's not often too that Honda owners would recommend Toyotas. This is completely out of character.

Are they driving within Vancouver only? If so, BZ4x is so simple and like any Toyota that it's a great choice.

If they're going to leave Vancouver at all or drive >200km in a day, AVOID.

- No preconditioning = terrible fast charging in winter under 10C
- No trip planner = get lost finding good chargers
- No heat pump = 200km range once heat comes on

They refused to sell this thing in most Canadian markets for a reason lol.
Fast charging to get 150km range would legit take 3-4 hours once the weather got even a little bit cold.

It's around 14-20kWh / 100km, so at 10c/ kWh we're looking at $2 to travel 100km or $4 to 200km on the conservative end.

Honda has no EVs to speak of, and like Radeonboy/Astulzer said, if they are not doing major road trips and can charge at home, a bz4X is a perfectly fine vehicle for older parents that won't confuse them and at a cheaper price.
