Why do we need to shore up our goaltending anyway? Are we going to win next year? Not a fucking chance.. Is Markstrom ever going to be a legitimate #1 goalie???? Personally I don't think so... just go with Markstrom next year from the getgo instead of coddling him and making his confidence go to shit thinking we always need a crutch for him, develop Demko and see what's up 2 seasons from now.
I agree, at some point we need to see what Markstrom can do during a full season. And, does it really matter whether or not our goaltending is good or bad. I mean the team is gonna be shit next season anyways. Fuck the "r"ebuild and lets bring on the "R"ebuild. Management seem to be a bunch of pussies and i'm still not convinced that ownership isn't meddling in hockey ops.
I would rather sign Miller and give this team an opportunity to win, then rely on Markstrom and Bachman and potentially have a disaster of a season. I think regardless we will be bottom 3-5 in the league. Hard to find that fine line between rebuilding while being competitive and trading away all our veterans and expecting 21 year olds to teach themselves to be professionals.
We really do not want to be the next Edmonton for the next 8-9 years.
^ If you think we will be bottom 3-5 regardless of signing Miller or not, then why sign him and what's your point?
Worded that poorly. Meant to say with miller i think the team would have a better chance to win every night rather *but probably still be in the bottom 5* then markstrom/Bachman and potentially being in last place by a long shot. I guess i would rather see the team lose while trying to compete, rather then lose/trade their veterans and just tank for high picks.
I don't get everyone's reluctance for a Markstrom/Bachman combo. Bachman was kind of thrown to the wolves this year and he played perfectly fine for a backup. At some point, the organization needs to give Markstrom the reigns to try and be a #1 goalie, instead of having Miller here and ruining his confidence as a goalie that is only good enough to be in a 1a/1b situation.
Because when markstrom gets injured the team is going to lean on a career AHL'r? I would rather sign Miller or Elliott with markstrom being the 1a option. I just don't see the Canucks running with a markstrom/Bachman tandem. elliott may not be bad, cheap due to his lack lustre past season and will be a good 1b option after markstrom. Also didn't seem like garteig was ready for the AHL last season so there is a hole in the AHL to back up demko.

This is why the Canucks should explore the possibility of bringing on a bad contract (i.e Lehtonen/Niemi) in addition to gaining a pick and young prospect from them as part of the deal..a.k.a pull a Maple Leafs. And, also explore moving Tanev/Edler. I know this is farfetched for the current management, but if a team is serious about doing a proper rebuild then its time to clean the slate.

You discount the season that Bachman had, yet his numbers (though limited) were better than Elliott's. Brian Elliott was an absolute train wreck this season and he's on the wrong side of 30. It's poor cap management to sign a goalie like Elliott to a few mill/season when the performance that he gives will probably be only slightly better than what the Canucks already have in Markstrom/Bachman
Edler is always a no go his no trade clause is iron clad
If management were motivated enough, I'm guessing Edler could be persuaded to submit a list of teams he would be willing to waive his NTC for. However, given the track record of the current management group I would also tend to believe that Edler will stay put. The proper course of action should be to try and get some return by trading him while he still has value. This team has no clue how to properly manage their assets.
Miller was pretty good last year but he's old and Markstrom's new deal kicks in on July 1. At the end of the day, Miller is going to have to take a huge paycut to justify keeping him on. We can't justify $8M+ on goaltending with this roster.
Sonick is a genius. I won't go into detail what's so great about his post. But it's damn good!

If you're implying we did in the past and it was fine, we had two world-class, fan favourite goaltenders who made $9.3M on a Presidents Trophy-winning, Stanley Cup-contending team. If not, I apologize.
This is a team that has finished 28th and 29th over the past 2 seasons. We should be using that cap space to either take on bad contracts for longer-term assets, making offersheets, and/or scoring a suitable free agent in his mid-to-late 20s.

I don't think we have the cap space to take on bad contracts.
Bo and gudbranson going to take up $10 mil. Leaves us with $5-7 I think to sign the rest of the team. Unless aquilini willing to pay them to be in the ahl like the leafs.
Anyone notice a lot of the prospects are in town working out? Boeser, goldolbin, dahlen, juolevi and stetcher.

We currently have $55.6M in cap covering 10 forwards, 6 defensemen, and 1 goaltender. If Las Vegas takes Sbisa off our hands, that's $52M covering 10 forwards, 5 defensemen, and 1 goaltender.
Even if Horvat and Gudbranson combine for $10M (IMO, that's probably on the rich side, but it's Benning, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's that or more), that still leaves us with $11M in cap space to fill in spots for 2 forwards, 2 defensemen, and 1 goaltender.

I hope he does but this is a guy who got cut from 3 separate training camps without a contract offer the past 3 Septembers (Buffalo in 14-15, Detroit in 15-16, and San Jose in 16-17). To go from not even worthy of an ELC/AHL contract to NHL opening roster in 1 year would be extremely impressive. I don't know anything about the kid besides what I've read (didn't watch the Memorial Cup this year), so I hope he's that good.

But you can still take a bad contract and bury it in Utica though right?
