1990's-2013ish cocaine was super safe and nobody I ever knew died or OD'ed from it. Ever.

2014+ people I knew started dying every month. At first nobody tied it to the coke but then it started becoming obvious. Then when my baby's mother told me she was pregnant, I quit cold turkey knowing that coke had become totally too risky. My dealer OD'ed and died 5 days later! Eight people I used to party and drink and socialize with in Gastown died from summer of 2015 to early 2016. All professionals making good money and well-loved on Facebook and such.
