OTOH, doing deals with other countries, focusing on internal trade barriers and tackling infrastructure projects are things within our control. | Considering how Trump is making made-in-Japan cars cheaper than cars made in US / Canada / Mexico, I don't really expect us to get an actual deal, which is why I put quotes around "deal" in my earlier comment. IMO, the 15% "deal" that Japan got is pretty much as good as it could get, and I don't expect us to get something like that. Somewhere between 20 - 30% would be my guess too, since we are currently at 35%.
And I am also not ruling out how we won't be able to negotiate anything by Aug 1. But as I was saying in the earlier post, in that case, we'd still have another year to negotiate before CUSMA expires.
It is really funny though that Trump gave Japan the 15% tariff on cars. How can he not see this move is directly going against his own policy of bringing manufacturing back to the US? (which is in itself a really stupid idea) And how can he not see the backlash from the US auto industry? Is he gonna TACO on the steel and aluminum tariffs for the auto sector as well as a result?

It's cheap and you can generally get it for <$1/lb when it goes on sale. But I'll probably just stick to Thai jasmine rice in the foreseeable future until Canada-US relations improve.

since you've brought it up, I'm honestly surprised they haven't started using convicts to work in the fields to replace all the people they've deported lol. obviously not something I condone but seems like a "free" source of labour, if you will.

I totally condone prison labour, make license plate or whatever ... they have to compensate to society for whatever the hell they did. Maybe I'm racist against prisoners.

Not too sure on the idea of forced labor, especially at pennies on the hour.
All that does is incentivize certain states to incarcerate people on frivolous and bullshit charges as a means of cheap production/labor, we've seen that happen ever since emancipation.
It's not a simple thing.

Prison labour is definitely just slavery with extra steps.

Drip drip drip... Quote:
A bombshell new report from The Wall Street Journal confirms that President Donald Trump’s name is in the Epstein files — and that he was told as much by his own attorney general in May.
“When Justice Department officials reviewed what Attorney General Pam Bondi called a ‘truckload’ of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein earlier this year, they discovered that Donald Trump’s name appeared multiple times, according to senior administration officials,” began the new story from the Journal. “In May, Bondi and her deputy informed the president at a meeting in the White House that his name was in the Epstein files, the officials said. Many other high-profile figures were also named, Trump was told. Being mentioned in the records isn’t a sign of wrongdoing.”
According to the paper — which Trump is currently suing for publishing a story about a bawdy birthday card he allegedly addressed to the late sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein — Trump was told that the files contained “unverified hearsay about many people, including Trump, who had socialized with Epstein in the past.”
A joint DOJ-FBI memo published by Axios earlier this month set off a firestorm of controversy after it revealed that the Trump administration had concluded Epstein killed himself and had no incriminating client list that he had been using to blackmail associates — including some of the world’s most wealthy, famous, and powerful people.
Many of Trump’s most fervent supporters have been demanding more answers ever since, while the president and his team have sought to quickly move on from the topic.
Trump filed a libel lawsuit against the Journal last Friday for publishing the story about the birthday card he allegedly gave Epstein.
“The Wall Street Journal, and Rupert Murdoch, personally, were warned directly by President Donald J. Trump that the supposed letter they printed by President Trump to Epstein was a FAKE and, if they print it, they will be sued. Mr. Murdoch stated that he would take care of it but, obviously, did not have the power to do so. The Editor of The Wall Street Journal, Emma Tucker, was told directly by Karoline Leavitt, and by President Trump, that the letter was a FAKE, but Emma Tucker didn’t want to hear that. Instead, they are going with a false, malicious, and defamatory story anyway. President Trump will be suing The Wall Street Journal, NewsCorp, and Mr. Murdoch, shortly,” declared Trump on Truth Social last Thursday, shortly after the publication of the story.
“President Trump has already beaten George Stephanopoulos/ABC, 60 Minutes/CBS, and others, and looks forward to suing and holding accountable the once great Wall Street Journal. It has truly turned out to be a ‘Disgusting and Filthy Rag’ and, writing defamatory lies like this, shows their desperation to remain relevant,” he concluded.

Surely Mr. Harvard PhD can do better than that or maybe he is outsmarted by Mr. Wharton School.
Either way, Carney needs to stick to a deadline so the bleeding stops. If he is as good of a negotiator as he claimed to be, then Canada shouldn't be in a worse position than December 2024. We already conceded enough and didn't get anything in return. |

Prisoners who does good work can somehow get their sentences shortened. The thing with prison is that they all sit around and do shit ... it doesn't prepare them to go back into society. They come out worst than before they went in.
I think we're way beyond the point of incarcerating people for light crimes to have cheap labour. Hell, there isn't even enough room to put hardened repeated criminals in jails. Go cry me a river about civil liberties and rights for prisoners.
Stop me when I start sounding like Hondaracer
