I pulled over and the cop came to me asked me for license and insurance, and told me my car was too loud and it’s too low with illegal modified camber. BTW I drive a 2007 GTI with turboback and pss10 coilover. I was driving 50km/h with 2000rpm, how was my car loud. Any truck or bus drove pass by would make a louder noise than my car. Then the cop asked me to rev my car to 3000rpm, then he went tested it with a sound measure and said I exceeded the sound test (he said he had 96db). He wrote me a ticket for unnecessary noise $109 and another ticket that I have to go to VW for an inspection. I asked the cop I wasn’t even speeding or reving at all, why would you give me the tickets. I had the car for almost 8 years and the mods was done by the previous owner. He said I was disturbing the neighboorhoods and all modified cars shouldn’t have existed because they are illegal. For the whole conversation, I was being as polite and respectful as I could. However, the cop’s attitude was very aggressive, mean and rude. I definitely didn’t do anything disturbing to the neighboorhood, but I felt disturbed by him. I went to VW right after the incident and asked about the inspection. The guy at VW told me about the story behind all these and told me even some stock porsche got VI for no reason. That’s just ridiculous.

Are you going to take your car in for inspection as is?

Pics of your car please, and since you're new here, a stock FRS (with modified exhaust) just passed his inspection as is, without changing his exhaust.

So no, not all modified cars are illegal.
How low is your car and how aggressive is the camber?

I guess at the time, you didn't know what was happening. But this has nothing to do with speeding or how polite you are to the cop. It's kind of personal... or, personal to car enthusiasts and performance cars.

I would love to know more about that stock Porsche story.

I tried to upload a photo of my car but the size is too big.
No his name is not Derek.

Host the images on IMGUR like I did. :) Also I passed with an aftermarket exhaust so it really depends on the sound testing at the licensed facility.

What a joke.

Twi7ch 01-22-2019 06:02 PM

Did the officer say that or a tech from VW about an aftermarket exhaust not passing? Because as long as it's under certain decibel levels it will pass.

Another example of cops being ignorant... Just because the exhaust is aftermarket doesn't mean it will fail. As long as it's not straight pipe, cats still exist for efficient emission, and within db limit, there shouldn't be a reason why it would not pass.

The problem I see here is that Cain & Co. has an understanding that anything and EVERYTHING aftermarket warrants a VI... Which obviously isn't the case, is he a rookie?... This needs to be brought to his superior... File a formal complaint and harrassment report to VPD. Q&A will get us no where.

AzNightmare 01-22-2019 06:23 PM

That's the issue. It's becoming more than just Cain, but Cain & Co.

Combined with that video Reggie posted with one officer (who I assume is Cain?) training this other newbie cop.

I have doubts this is going to blow over. Spring time come, and you got a whole force of ignorant officers running rampant with a vendetta, eagerly awaiting all the modded cars to come out of storage.

Maybe what started all this was a bruised ego, but now you got Cain wondering why the hell didn't he think of this much much sooner? This is fun now, why stop?

RevYouUp 01-22-2019 06:38 PM

There's probably an agenda to reduce exhaust noises by the VPD. This VI situation just allows them to take advantage of it.

But this whole exhaust noise thing is such bull shit. This bus that passes by my house is louder than any car I have. What about these semis too ? What's the DB threshold for these larger vehicles? Do all vehicles have the same threshold ? No shit a v10 lambo would produce louder exhaust notes than a 4 banger civic.

SpeedStars 01-22-2019 07:00 PM

Cracking down on noisy exhausts might not be that far fetched. During the mayoral elections, some of the parties promised outlawing noisy exhausts especially in the west end area (NPA). I'll have to find the source, but with the recent political changes, I actually wouldn't be surprised if this becomes the new "distracted driving" crackdown

I counted 3 or 4 of them, it just Cain, who do it most, or we just lucky to see him more.

Traum 01-22-2019 09:37 PM

If you don't mind, please post a picture of your VI ticket (blacking out your personal info). It is useful to know the exact item that an officer is citing you for. IMO, if that is not correct, it shows the officer doesn't know what he is doing / talking about, and is therefore poorly trained. That gives you grounds to file a complaint on him.

You have the officer's name and badge number. If he was spreading mis-information, I recommend you to file a complaint on him as well.

According to the MVA, a vehicle can only be too low if:

1) the headlights are too low (lower than 56cm)
2) any part of your vehicle is lower than the lowest part of your wheels
3) the change in suspension height is more than 10cm

Now, the CVSE vehicle inspection manual does contain an item under the "Steering" section that requires the (front) tires to have at least 1" or 25mm clearance from the body, fender, or other parts. From an inspection's point of view, a lowered vehicle is more likely going to violate this than any vehicle lowering / suspension ride height / ground clearance clauses that the MVA or CVSE inspection manual would contain. If the traffic officer is citing that your vehicle is too low, I think that could potentially serve as something we can file a complaint on.

I will elaborate more on that in a later post. Got some stuff to take care of at home before I can sit down to write properly. (But now I guess I have just given away another tip to Cain & Co. to avoid screwing up.) FailFish

Will it gonna be ok if I modified my car like lowered with non oem parts and have it VIed at one of their suggested facilty and got registered?
I’m planning to have my car lowered and get a new wheels......

Until this whole "VI-apocalypse" quiets down (if it ever), let's make it the best out of it until we can figure this all out (documenting and filing complaint for harassment) - Everyone should download an app called "Waze" and let's report each other where they may be hiding. Basically it's a LIVE "Police spotted" app that allows each user to pin point areas where they are hiding.

I know this isn't much, but it's something rather than nothing... BTW make sure your phone is properly mounted or have a passenger operate the phone when doing this otherwise you will get pulled over and probably get more than just a VI... Lol

We should all get giant dildo shifters, and when Cain approachs your window, just start furiously sucking it while holding your index finger to his face letting him know you need a second.

There's an article about an opportunity to speak up to our new mayor not sure if he'll have any pull but it's a step forward....

and just ignore their different training, tasks assigned, roles, and expertise?

if you were on a waitlist with an opthalmologist for a surgery, do you hit up the neighbourhood optometrist and demand a treatment the next day because a 'doctor is a doctor'? health care is your tax dollars too, right? so they should run exactly the way you expect of them? to better benefit society?

all of the photos besides the GranTurismo and FR-S are visibly not at stock height, I'm not saying that automatically rules them as not legal, but that's how they're able to hit you with a VI

are they targeting enthusiasts? quite likely

should there be recourse/an actual mechanism for an appeal/dispute? absolutely

is VI outdated? could just be

but looking at it objectively, are those VI's not valid? we have learned it doesn't have to conform to the MVA, as long as there's reason to suspect it's not fit for the road, it can be pulled.

RevYouUp 01-23-2019 12:24 AM

Might as well suspect all of us for illegal street racing/speeding and impound/scrap all of our cars while they are at it.

Issuing VIs based on suspicion is just poor practice/training. If you're a cop you should be 100% confident that the car you're issuing a VI to is violating the MVA or w/e.

So looking at your take objectively, and as you seem to be playing contrarian, you're advocating for VPD allowing the systematic death of car culture in Vancouver and the outlawing of a multi billion dollar aftermarket industry? What you're saying is that every car that wants to go into Vancouver proper must be completely stock, even though there are wheels out there that meet OEM standards, yet VPD is profiling people based on what wheels are on their cars.

If that's the case, then why the fuck does a site like Revscene even exist anymore?

If you're sure your car will pass with the exhaust that you have on, go get it inspected and if it passes, I would dispute the unnecessary noise ticket. Also, make sure you ask the inspector the proper way to measure the exhaust noise so you can grill the officer on whether his road side test was done properly or not. You would also have the passed VI to show you were in compliance.

Additionally, if it passes, then I would file a complaint to the VPD as well. His comment that any modification is illegal is BS and he should be called out on it.
