I waited 14 mins for my Uber to show up today but didn't care one bit because it wasn't a cab.

Am I missing something here?

Unless at airport or hotel or train Everytime I've called a cab wait time is always greater than 14 mins

twitchyzero 01-29-2020 07:05 PM

can i refuse Chinese-looking people at the airport???

JSALES 01-29-2020 08:21 PM

This was the lineup for taxis at YVR when we had our snowfall. Imagine arriving, picking up your luggage and having to wait in this shit

Matsuda 01-29-2020 08:44 PM

They fined a driver $500 in Surrey

you think the average uber driver has a snow plow+winters?

even with uber/lyft that line will still be redonkulous

Not sure what the requirements in BC are, but they're required to have snowflake winters in Ontario

twitchyzero 01-30-2020 09:58 AM

it'll be whatever class 4 requires, somehow i doubt there's a stipulation for winter tires in the city

If you're downtown, cabs usually come within 5 -7 mins. BUT that's IF they come at all, and the problem is you just never know.

14 mins to wait for an Uber is especially long for a big city. But at least you know it's coming.

twitchyzero 01-30-2020 11:17 PM

ride hailing in its current from is also getting some resistance from CoB as well
at least they wont swoop down to sting operations for now

And I bet the surge price for that one car that does manage to show up would be just as redonkulous.

This blows me mind about YVR. I travel a lot, and of all the cities around the world that I have visited, I've never consistently waited for cabs the way I do when I arrive back at YVR.

It literally makes no fucking sense.

It gets ridiculous at YVR, especially during the summer when people are arriving for the cruise ships. There’s a holding area for taxis a few minutes away from the airport too and they say YVR is supposed to be a world class airport.

Acura604 01-31-2020 12:35 PM

so the UBER back from YVR to surrey..... went a bit...odd.

waiting at YVR uber zone for 10mins

from YVR, the app directed driver into vancouver along marine towards knight instead of hwy 99.

dude didn't load my luggage lol...

i guess the rain hampered his vision but he ran a 4 way stop and almost collided with a pickup truck. I saw it all happening and told him 'whoa whoa..slooow sloww....wait...' and he caught it a second before impact.

^^ sounds like every taxi I’ve been in

Damn at least they are inside. When I was waiting at YVR Jan. 12th with hundreds of other people we were all lined up outside freezing

sonick 01-31-2020 06:49 PM

Ordered an Uber Friday night, about 5-10mins to get a driver and then another 12 mins or so until they arrived. Not bad, expect it to be better. Very weird experience at home, even though it's so common when I'm travelling.

punkwax 01-31-2020 07:48 PM

I expect Uber experiences will improve quickly. I like the system. If Acura604’s driver doesn’t provide a better experience in future and has garbage ratings, they’ll likely go away eventually because business could suck.

I also like how drivers can rate passengers. If you’re a shitty person to someone getting you from A-B, you may as well call a cab. They deserve each other :lol

twitchyzero 01-31-2020 09:03 PM

how come it takes 10 min just to connect to a driver? it just shows as no drivers or there's like a queuing screen?

and is google maps gonna reintergrate uber? that was super slick

There's a queuing screen that says like "connecting you with a driver" once you decide.

It'll probably be faster in future with more drivers.

Akinari 02-02-2020 02:22 PM

I wonder if it'll ever improve to the level of service I get from Uber in Taipei or HK, or if it's a culture thing and anything in North America will never have the type of service culture most Asian countries have.

6793026 02-02-2020 03:40 PM

Exactly.
HK + China: fast food delivery is epic fast, easy, due to available of small streets yet with bicycles + cars. Same for Uber.

With location + lack of driver in YVR, its extremely difficult to be successful. Look at Car2Go, they are leaving. Owning a car in van is a necessity, hence the need for taxi is extremely incomparable to HK / Toronto/ NY where you can just hail a cab due to density / car ratio.

Razor Ramon HG 02-02-2020 05:20 PM

Took Uber today. Connected to a driver and they showed up all within 5 minutes. Quick and painless.

teggy604 02-07-2020 06:45 AM

So the taxi association lost in court. Should be a clear sign to Surrey mayor to stop ticketing Uber/Lyft drivers. Its a waste of Surrey resources and a waste of tax payers money when the drivers fight the ticket in court.
