Still, my original idea remain the same. Just because it's one day, a credit, a year... it doesn't matter.

It's not so much about kids outside of the band learning about indigenous, it's about actual indigenous people who can learn about their culture through the curriculum. If we can fund French immersion schools throughout the country, I don't think it's that hard to create an additional layer for kids with native heritage to learn about their culture throughout the years while being outside of the band zoning.

I am not deliberatly trying to argue for argument's sake, and you've provide a good enough reason as to why the Pattullo Bridge should be renamed. But if there isn't really a good reason to ditch a name that already been in use for a long time, then it's just like pandering to the indigenous community and become disingenuous.

The argument I read is that they're saying it's a new piece of infrastructure so it gets a new name - a lot of infrastructure we have is still first generation so there isn't a lot of precedent for whether a name sticks or gets replaced so (except if the name is based on location in which case the name sticks).

I have no strong opinion on renaming infrastructure beyond feeling that it's a nothing burger either ways - there's mostly no harm in keeping a name OR in changing a name. I like that we're bringing back some of the historical names of our land (it's not like we don't use it in some places already like Kits or like how California uses the Spanish names for cities) but I also think it's fine if we use infrastructure to recognise important people (except for the fact it's just a bunch of white dudes - some of questionable histories).

I would say that we seem to have an awfully short list of important people to recognise - Lougheed, Bennett, Patullo - they all have multiple things name after them. Do we really need that? Can't they just get a single thing?

Out of our few Michelin 1 star rated restaurants, 2 of them are in this shit hole neighborhood. I refuse to go pay 500-600 dollars for a meal to only have a crack head yell at me afterwards.

For all those people that died, how many have had chronic substance abuse previously?

The fact so many people are dieing only underlines how disgustingly pathetic our system is at handling addiction and mental health, it’s not just “oh well their an addict so who cares”

The already poorly supported system is strained to the max with these issues.

The DTES crack heads are probably the ones NOT dieing.

For every homeless addict you see on the street there are probably 10 fold in full addiction living “normal” lives in secret. When full blown addicts ODing 20 times a year can’t find recovery spaces when their in the emergency room, you think the blue collar guy who’s stealing tools to feed his addiction has the slightest chance at getting help? lol

We as a culture have accepted where we’re at. We are soooo fucked with this.

I’ll write a bigger post when I’m back but I’ve been gone for a month, and I’ve seen a total of 2 homeless people over 4 countries. The concept of being a strung out addict on the street -does not exist here-

Our system doesn’t work. And in reality, these systems here are not that different, they are just wayyyy better at being effective in their implementation. They also aren’t strung out in endlessssss discussion and review. Remember when Eby and Carney said we’re gonna open up provincial trade barriers? Well that shit ain’t happening for 3+ months now (9 months and counting at that point)

We can’t do -anything- effectively.

It’s fucking hilarious, the friends I have here both in Finland and Sweden now perceive Canada as a dangerous country to visit. Gotta love it. Completely unprovoked with zero input from my side two different family friend groups I’ve known for 30+ years now have the perception that Canada is a dangerous place as a visitor due to crime, addiction, and poverty. I honestly felt embarrassed to hear this coming from them.

Ended up telling them even with homeless everywhere you might as well come because our dollar is so shit you can live like kings anyways.
