Good news for our Canadian military:

Citynews1130

Prime Minister Mark Carney says his government will boost entry-level pay for Canadian Armed Forces privates by 20 per cent for the regular force and 13 per cent for reservists.

Other military members will also receive pay raises, with smaller increases for higher ranks — part of a plan to boost recruitment and operational readiness.

The federal government says the new compensation package is expected to cost around $2 billion annually and is part of a planned $9.3 billion budget boost this year to get to NATO’s defence spending benchmark target of two per cent of GDP.

The government says it’s creating new military allowances and enhancing existing ones to help it retain personnel and drive up recruitment in a competitive job market.

Those allowances include $50,000 in bonuses for people entering and working in what the government calls “stressed occupations” — critical jobs in sectors that are seeing too many vacancies.

The government says staffing levels in 53 of 116 critical occupations, which include vehicle and maritime technicians, are now below 75 per cent.

Good stuff. A bit more detail from Global News (https://globalnews.ca/news/11323701/...-announcement/)

Quote:
For privates, sailors and aviators, a regular force member’s starting salary will increase 20 per cent, from $43,368 annually to $52,044. Reserve force members with those same ranks will see a 13 per cent raise.

...

In addition to the salary raises, military members will get a new annual lump-sum payment based on years of service. The payments range from $2,000 for regular force members who have served between five and 10 years to $6,000 for members with more than two decades of service. The scale for reserve force members is between $400 and $1,200.

A new daily allowance of $45 will also be paid to members deployed to help respond to domestic natural disasters, while members deployed in the Arctic — a top priority for the military — will see a 50 per cent top-up to land duty allowances and a 25 per cent boost in sea duty allowances.

Those will be paid on top of existing environmental allowances that compensate members facing adverse conditions, which will transition from a monthly rate to a flat daily rate of $100 per day under the new payment plan.

...

Instructors will also get an incentivizing bonus of $300 per month when posted to a designated military training school. Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School will receive an additional $35 per day they instruct up to $12,000 annually, while instructors at other institutions will get $20 more per day of instruction up to $8,400 per year.

Finally, the new plan changes the allowances for members required to relocate for postings from one based on pay scale to one based on the number of moves. For example, instead of paying out a month’s salary, members will get $13,500 for each of a member’s first three relocations, with the allowance climbing to $27,000 by the seventh move.

Members will also get new annual food, transportation and incidentals allowances when posted to a new location where they cannot be accompanied by their family.

I'm both surprised and not surprised by how little childcare workers make - most of them seem to make between $20-25/hr for what is a pretty challenging job but, OTOH, the supply of people willing to do them seems fairly high. Many of the ones I've met are new immigrants (Koreans seem really popular for this in my area) and they use the job to level up their English and start their lives here. There's a few who have made it their career - at my kid's former daycare a few teachers had been around for 10+ years.

So, by and large, I see this as a supply and demand problem and not a gov't problem.

Supply side is mitigated pretty easily for staffing when pay goes up. My daycare has great staff, but way more people have left than I’d expect to see in a sustainable career.
If the government is supposedly taking it on with the $10/day part that BC NDP has shit the fucking bed on astronomically, it’s a government problem IMO.
Speaking of NDP, I’m going full Honda at this point. They have introduced a new rule for ISN (insufficient notice shifts) in health care that they need to be approved by the chief of VCH personally. For example there is about 1 ISN shift per unit on an average summer day in a unit with 9 nurses. Making this more difficult guarantees more shortages, more closures, more wait times. They haven’t done shit about fuck for healthcare in this province and I’m over it. I won’t be voting for them again regardless of what morons will stand to replace them.

This is sorely needed. It's been a few years so I don't remember all the details, I had a coworker who's son was going through basic training in the East Coast. The stipends are miserable to the point where he was calling dad and asking for $100 so he can eat for the next 2 weeks during break, because whatever they gave him was only enough to cover rent and cellphone. Dad sent him $500 and told him not to starve.

Canadians are going to fail the Climate Lockdown IQ test just like they failed the COVID IQ test:

Lefties and dough-brained rigthies will come along and say:
