It should be coming

Canada in ‘strategic partnership’ with China, minister says

Quote:
Just three years after Canada called China a “disruptive global power,” Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says Canada now views Beijing as a strategic partner in a dangerous world.

Anand told The Canadian Press on Monday that a strategic partnership with China means going beyond allowing individual irritants to strain the entire relationship and permitting Canada to advance its economic and security interests.

Liberal cutting gov't spending. Canada Posting losing 10-12 M a day.
Stop investing on some parts and doing more elsewhere and cutting some. BOLD statement. Of course it's FLUFF but how will Pierre come back to this? SPEND MORE? LOL ...

Tariff on GM on their vehicles going back into Canada. Good on him on doing that. It's a political decision and would it affect anything.. meh.. but still good to know.

THE TOUGHEST thing Carney has to deal with is - please relax tariffs on canola oil, but we must no tariff E cars... that's a tough talk cause it won't be a win win for canada any way.

any chance of going lax against china on EV tariffs or would that be shooting ourselves in the foot against our own EV manufacturing?

If we relax tariffs on Chinese EVs, we need to take into account the amount of backlash the US will bring, as well as the impact to the existing auto (manufacturing) workers and feeder industries. The impact downstream from the auto manufacturers would probably be pretty big. Without going through the calculations, it would be impossible to tell whether it'd be more painful to continue banning Chinese EVs, or whether it'd hurt more to retrain a large number of workers in the auto manufacturing industries.

If the shift needs to happen, then the shift needs to happen. In that case, the federal gov's role would need to revolve around support and retraining. Would it make sense at all for at least some of the auto workers to get re-trained as auto mechanics?

The biggest problem I see with allowing Chinese EVs into our market is -- who would buy one? Even right now, I believe every single Chinese EV manufacturer is bleeding money badly. Mass consolidation and/or bankruptcies is practically destined to take place. And with an EV, if the manufacturer pulls support on the vehicle, you're pretty much GG-ed.

And then the thing is longer term reliability. VinFast is a really good example here. The N.American market is not easy to crack. Of course it doesn't help that the VinFast cars are at least somewhat problematic, if not badly problematic.

I would be comfortable with buying China-made EVs from known brands like Tesla and Polestar though, assuming the car gets good reviews. (Well, I won't buy Teslas bcos of Elon).

I'd say this is pretty much the biggest risk right now with EVs. Not only are they expensive, but you could easily see yourself in a situation where you're left owning a paperweight Fisker-like, with no support.

It's hard enough getting parts for discontinued model ICE vehicles, imagine the headache with these EVs that are being built to be treated like throwaway consumer products?

The space right now is just too unstable. I still don't think we should restrict Chinese EVs though, let the market decide in that respect, you purchase one, you undertake the burden of risk the manufacturer might not be around in 5 years from now.

You're essentially trading off a cheap entry into a vehicle understanding the potential long-term gamble.

The shift needs to happen because we're buying an inferior product, why should we protect inferior companies, they will fail eventually anyways perfect example of this is Canada post. More competition is always better. It drives growth and development. What difference is there if there's already made in China polestar and Tesla or Vin fast. Why can't we get made in China rolls Royce then. Everything is just a brand label. There's plenty of made in China Toyota, Honda, BMW, Benz, beetle, if it meets our safety standard it should be let in. If vinfast with Indian engineering can pass I don't see why China can't pass. This is 100% political, we're banning based on country not whether it's a quality product or not. How come we can vinfast, lolvo then, they don't have a factory here, shouldn't we protect our workers from Sweden or Vietnam?

With this logic we should ban American brands cus they want to steal the jobs from us.

I spent a few days in China recently, and every car I took was an EV, many with some form of auto drive or assist, including a taxi with no driver at all.

I think the future will have everyone in these things, with some sort of assist, with owning your own car a luxury item, and ICE vehicles being a HEAVILY taxed luxury item. In cities at least

I can picture most people not having cars at all, and just relying on fleets of self driving cars. This is kind of necessary, because self driving doesn't cope with shitty/aggressive drivers very well

BYD might be the biggest Chinese EV player right now, but that doesn't mean they are in good financal health. They are every bit as involved with the 0 kms used car scam that numerous other Chinese EV manufacturers are involved in, and they are losing money on every vehicle they sell, despite the massive amounts of gov subsidies -- out-in-the-open or otherwise -- and preferential treatment they receive. I think it was just a few days ago when they got busted in Oz for stockpiling 1600+ brand new, unsold cars in some theme park there.

In case you didn't get the memo, the Chinese EV industry got to where they are partly because of massive state subsidies. No private business enterprise can compete with state-sponsored businesses, and the solar panel industry is already a historical example of how the Chinese state machine flexed its power to wipe out competition.

Yes but why protect the losers, you think other governments don't support their domestic brands? They all do, that's like not letting Indians in because they also tamper with our elections and to protect our retarded less smart kids. But yet we still let them in.

No one is stopping our government to throw billions into training and industry rather than giving to Ukraine Palestine refugees, but we CHOOSE to. We value Ukraine higher than XYZ priority or our local crack heads.

But we CHOOSE to set up our system and policies to have shit productivity and worse and worse efficiency while we blame others for prioritizing it? Sure we can try to ban them, they will still beat us eventually cuz we're not trying to win, while others are. Loser brokie mentality.

I'm pretty sure I looked up some numbers before, and shared it here on RS as well -- the level of subsidies China funnels into its EV sector is massive compared to what the US has pumped in (and our subsides are nowhere close to what the US has subsidized), and that doesn't include all the non-tangible perks as well. I'm not gonna do it again. Essentially, the losers lost bcos the winner cheated. If that is something you can support, go ahead and be my guest.

We may need to support these "losers" because the cost of not doing so might be greater than the costs to support them. It all depends on how bad the numbers are.

In some cases, there might be a national security interest in retaining those talents. For example, having these "inferior" manufacturers around might be important if we still want to have the mechanical engineers that are capable of working on military equipment. Domestic food production always needs to have some protection bcos no country would want to be reliant on another country -- potentially hostile -- to be our primary food source. The US turning against us is already one of the best examples of why we can't afford to completely give up on having our own production.
