Yes, the Delta variant is the one first discovered in India. The Alpha is the one first discovered in Britain.

IIRC with one dose of the mRNA vaccine, you're something like 30% protected.

RiceIntegraRS 06-06-2021 05:11 PM

We would be 100% protected if we didnt let people from other countries come in.

twitchyzero 06-06-2021 05:19 PM

i think the 'if we never let them in' argument doesn't work so well anymore as outlined in taiwan

get protected..even trudeau has a point that the pandemic isn't over until it's over everywhere

RiceIntegraRS 06-06-2021 05:45 PM

forgive me for being stupid, but how can a variant that originates from say India, possibly come to Canada without someone from India bringing it into the country...... Which is why i say no one comes in cause i can see someone from India goto USA then come to Canada..... or am i missing something here.

whitev70r 06-06-2021 05:50 PM

^ It's possible that the virus in Canada can mutate and come up with our own new variant ... Epsilon if they go with Greek lettering. I mean the variant in India mutated within India.

westopher 06-06-2021 06:14 PM

If you want to prevent the spread from other countries, you also have to prevent Canadian citizens from reentering the country if they are abroad. Do you really think that we can close the borders indefinitely to anyone, citizen or not, and related to shipping goods as well?
There’s also a very reasonable chance it was here before it was “the India variant” as you don’t test for something before you know it exists.

320icar 06-06-2021 06:21 PM

What westopher said. If I were a Canadian citizen and a global catastrophe was happening (which I think we can agree covid is) I’d like to think my country would be doing everything in its power to get me back home.

Granted that should have been a year ago. Anyone trying to come back in December bringing the mutated strains should have been asked “wtf took you so long”

westopher 06-06-2021 06:33 PM

If my mom was dying in India, I’d sure as shit go see her, whether I was supposed to or not. We are a country built on immigration for better or for worse. When a citizen has to come home, they deserve to under any circumstances. That’s why I think we totally fucked the quarantine.
It should be mandatory (other than the shippers of goods) and have been done more effectively, as we know so much of our population comes and goes for reasons beyond they just want to go have a beer on a beach somewhere.

MG1 06-06-2021 06:40 PM

Everything would be good if we could trust people who, go abroad and come back, to do the right thing.

You are supposed to self isolate and get checked. Not go around shopping at Superstore and have friends "relatives" over.

westopher 06-06-2021 06:51 PM

Unfortunately, even though most people are decent, lots are fucking terrible, or stupid, or both.

There's a few of those "rules apply to everyone but myself" folks even on RS.

inv4zn 06-06-2021 08:52 PM

Just to add to this, to everyone sucking Australia's dick for their lockdown efforts, they blatantly barred their own citizens from returning home from places like India.

Ask yourselves which is the better option here.

Umm it's pretty simple because International travel is still a thing.

Indian Variant is in an Indian person > Someone visits him from say, the UAE and gets it > who in turn is visited by someone from the Europe and they get it > they in turn come to Canada because there's no flight ban and they say fuck it to the quarantine requirements on arrival. Boom Indian Variant is now spreading in Canada.

Doesn't even have to be that many steps even assuming we banned flights from India before the variant was identified it literally just takes one person to fly via a 3rd country before coming here.

MG1 06-07-2021 09:30 AM

Like a walker finding its way into a stadium. All it takes is one of those biters and boom. Zombie apocalypse............... trying to make it simple for people to understand.

That last episode of Fear The Walking Dead......... yikes.

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever walked in with someone getting their dose and gotten a 'drop-in' dose ?

When my dad went in with my mom they asked him if he wanted to get his at the same time even though his reservation was a week or two later.

68style 06-07-2021 11:17 PM

^ They been doing that for a few weeks now... parents with old enough kids etc...

Heck even back in the beginning they were letting spouses my parents age get it at the same time if they were within a couple years of each other.

Stats from the current outbreak in Singapore

667 cases, 129 of them in fully vaccinated people. Asymptomatic infections goes from 91% to 99% with vaccination. Oxygen, intensive care, death are effectively zero.

What's interesting is one dose seems to be about the same as not being dosed at all, but I guess it all depends on the specific timing.

westopher 06-08-2021 07:58 AM

That table reads like that in a way, but there’s a 75% reduction in actual cases in people with one dose.
Could be for both reasons that there is less transmission in partially vaccinated people, and asymptomatic cases aren’t being detected in partially vaccinated people.
It’s hard to get the numbers to paint a super accurate picture based on testing strategy.

sonick 06-08-2021 08:51 AM

for any AZ folks, this was a great summary of the current findings for mixing vaccine doses in context of BC:

Only if you get it, and there are 7.8x more cases in unvaccinated people than partially vaccinated. The way that chart is scaled is misleading.

For the partly vaccinated, there's 1 person who was in ICU and 4 that required oxygen.

Meanwhile for the unvaccinated, there have been 4 deaths, 5 in ICU, and 34 that required oxygen.
