I can't believe how inefficient portable AC is.
I have got Danby 14000 BTU, During the heat wave days 41-42c, We had temp set at 17c, but room temp will only go down to 27-29c.

Maybe i am comparing it to the ones my family has back in Taiwan.
During Summer in Taiwan, 34-36c most the days. Those wall hanging ACs are so strong. I remember i even had to turned it off during night time or set it at 21c.
And they are super super super quiet!!!

They are cheap too!!!
Not sure if i can get one and install it here.

Those wall hanging ones aren’t just that unit, it’s a whole compressor/condenser etc. And whatever else outside

also if you're house insulation is terrible its not going to keep the Cold air in so much while blocking whats outside.

i notice installing inside "trailers" that in summer months it feels like a heat box inside and portable is barely passable vs a newer up to date house.

Split type ACs are so good.. My place still has those square ones where the motor is attached and they are so fucking noisy it makes it hard to sleep.

So I ordered a Danby 12,000 BTU Single Hose unit from Costco on the chance I wasn't able to grab the 14,000 BTU in-store one.

If anybody wants/needs the 12,000 BTU one at cost, PM me. If not I'll just return.

Edit: AC gone to a fellow RS member!

Now that temperatures have gone down, the next potential problem area might be water shortage. We are blessed with mountains and glaciers, but if it doesn't rain in the next few weeks, the watersheds and reservoirs may dry up enough to warrant stricter water restrictions. Don't see any rainfall in the forecasts for at least two weeks, and we've been dry at least two weeks before this. At least here in the GVRD.

But did you do a heat load calculation for the amount of BTU required to cool the space

For anyone with a mini-split in Vancouver, what brand do you have and what's your opinion on them? Has anyone gotten any quotes for Mini-Splits recently? I know it probably won't get installed until the end of summer, but if we are going to get an annual heat wave, I think it may be a worthwhile investment.

Currently researching central AC as well. I don't want to deal with storing and setting up portables every year. Too much space, noise and not very effective. Time to bite the bullet.

Yes, i did

It was just in my bed room about 250 SQFT

As I know, 14000 BTU should be good for 4-500 SQFT.

Math aint that simple, but yes, a 14k should cool a 250sqft room no problem.

1: most likely the Unit is broken
2: Your windows or door are open
3: You turn on the unit at 7pm when you get home, needs to operate 24/7, with doors/windows closed.
Turning it on when you get home, and its 40c inside the room, with all the furniture / walls at 40c, will do no help.
Air conditioners are designed to maintain temperature at its rated BTU. "Pulling down" a room at 40C, is a completely different animal

Hand sanitizers will add to that problem (maybe even the major cause of skin irritation)......... gotta love that sting you get when you put hand sanitizer on your cracked fingers.

O'Keefe's Working Hands work for me. Not as greasy and slimy as other hand lotions. When my fingers get really bad, I put Polysporin on and wear gloves overnight to keep it from washing off. Heals the cracks quickly.

I always place the sanitizers on my palm and never let it touch the dry skin or cracks on the fingertips

to be clear, its just 3 fingers having this issue

anyone else experiencing this ?

I’ve had mild eczema for the past ten years or so on a couple fingers. The right pinky, the skin between the pinky and ring finger and the section behind my right thumb. Usually it’s triggered by harsh soaps (i.e. public soap dispensers), chemicals when i worked on my cars and now hand sanitizers. I think the hand washing orientation allows soap to naturally flow downwards towards the pinky and maybe I’m in a rush and don’t rinse it all sometimes? Same with hand sanitizers running down the hand.

I also use glysomed nightly on those spots and if I get lazy and miss a couple nights it usually flares up a little. I had topical steroid cream prescribed in my twenties but I found it made the skin thinner, although it was effective. Now I wear cotton glove liners inside work gloves if I’m doing garden work or working on the car. Helps a little against abrasion and chemicals and also because the sweat inside the glove also seems to trigger it.

For me, its been happening since last year. I am in my early 30s.

Do you think its due to coffee or sleeping late at night etc ?

Any hand lotion you are using now ?

My family doctor suggested glysomed which worked before but it doesn't seem to cure during the hotter days last month.

Thanks for the input !

I am using Vaseline "dry skin repair" (yellow bottle) during the afternoon and glysomed during morning and night times.

I wear those thin rubber gloves for work also and sweat seems to irritate it also.

Strange thing is, my left hand is completely fine though

Which hand do you use for your...late night activities?

I found Glaxal works a lot better than normal moisturizers. The doctor recommended it for my kids and it works great on them too. I find the stuff in the round tub is less greasy than the stuff in the squeeze tube, but the tube spreads easier.

Im too dumb to know the reasons for it, who really knows....

I can say for sure, mine gets worse in winter.
When i was in australia for 5 months, i did not have to use cream at all, once i came back, like clockwork it showed up.
Maybe its raincouver

I just use whatever my doctor prescribes me, im assuming it varies case by case.
Usually covered by bc medical, maybe cost me an extra 5$ or something.
