The team got a dose of reality today. We created enough chances to get a result, but didn't finish. If Canada's lack of finishing continues, it will be the difference between losses and draws.

Davies is a great talent, but he needs to stop trying to do everything himself, particularly when the team needs a goal.

Now I am more convinced than ever that Canada will finish last in Group F.

Why is that?

Davies will definitely play a role in the games. He might not start every game, but I can see him playing 30-45 minutes a game unless his hamstring gives out.

Crepeau was never going to start anyway.

If Lukaku can't play in our game against Belgium, that's going to help a lot. I think Canada has to go for it against Belgium.

I am still rather skeptical that Davies would be ready in 2 weeks for World Cup. Hamstring injuries generally tend to be troublesome, and it also means Davies would not be able to train during this rest and recovery period. At a minimum (to me at least), this means even if he comes back to join the Canadian team in Qatar, he is not going to be on form. At worst, if he is not fully recovered yet and still tries to play for Canada, that would not be good for him nor for Team Canada.

If Davies can't play, I think the emotional impact against Team Canada would be bigger than his actual physical absence.

I agree that Crepeau was very unlikely to play anyway, unless the coach decides that the outcome would not matter at all, and just wanted to give different players some exposure and experience at the WC level. But even that seemed unlikely, and is irrelevant at this point for Crepeau.

I'm surprised you think we'd have a chance against Belgium though. Belgium has a deep squad, and they are ranked #2 in the world for that reason. If anything, I think the game against Croatia is gonna be crucial.

Canada has the best chance of surprising in the first game. Belgium's back line is older, so Canada's pace up front could catch them flat-footed.

Croatia will be a very tough game because of their strong midfield. Also, Canada will no longer be a surprise after the first game.

Canada could get 0 points or make it to the group stage. Obviously, it makes sense to bet against Canada, but it wouldn't be a fluke if they won a game either.

Canada Soccer has put together a well-produced documentary about the team's journey through qualification

Much as I hate to do it since I have enjoyed previous World Cups... I am refusing to watch this one after all the articles I've read about atrocities committed against workers from outside countries building structures for this games and other buildings in the area.

Sucks for the players to end up tied in with it all, but just cannot support the host country at all.

In terms of controversies, the 2014 World Cup in Brazil also had a ton of them. IIRC, it was certainly one of the World Cups in recent memory that has a LOT of issues, from worker and construction safety, to misuse of public funding to enable the games, to humanitarian issues that involved eviction of people from their homes to build venues and stuff for the games.

But the Qatar games are definitely shaping up to be even more controversial. And I find it ironic that one of the goals Qatar had prior to hosting the games was to showcase its country to the rest of the world about how modern the country has become. But instead of doing that, it has only revealed to the rest of the world that they are still very much an outdated society with an outdated mindset.

It was an absolute mistake for FIFA to award this world cup to Qatar.

With that said, I will watch Canada's games because the team qualified the hard way and it's about time that soccer/football in Canada gets the attention that it deserves.

My buds from the Raincity Brigade are going to the WC in Qatar -- they're a bunch of drinkers and coke fiends, it'll be interesting to see how they fare out there

Most of the fans are South Asian and male. Looks like they have been hired.

This is going to be one of the lamest world cups ever.

Ugh... I hope Kone can continue to play well and be there when it counts...

Davies, the team’s best player, is working to shake off a hamstring strain he sustained just over a week ago and Herdman indicated his status will be questionable for Canada’s opening match in Group F against Belgium on Nov. 23.
The next friendly against Japan will be a good final test to gauge where we're at...

Nothing new, unfortunately as neighbouring countries like UAE were built on the backs of mostly Indian slaves err...economically-disenfranchised-employment-seekers and now served by mostly Asian harems.

You couldn't pay me to go there.

TSN is reporting that Davies is not with Team Canada in Qatar. -getting more treatment and rest for his hamstring.

-wonder if Alphonso will even play against Belgium on November 23rd?

He needs to be at 100 percent in order to be effective against the Belgians.

-from what the TSN soccer analysts for the World Cup are saying, soccer at the World Cup level is much different than club level soccer.

Personally, I don't think Davies will be ready for the game against Belgium. And more than anything else, I don't want to see him play despite being hurt.

I am surprised a soccer analyst would say the World Cup is much different than club level soccer. Compared to MLS, of course it is way different and leaps and bounds ahead. But compared to UEFA Champions League, or even just Premier League or LaLiga, I'd say that in some cases, European league play is at a higher level than even the World Cup.

I think a lot of what they’re referring to is the pressure of playing in a WC vs league play. This one amplified a bit due to the ridiculous location and weather

All beer sales have been banned.

but you can still buy bud zero.

Budweiser spent 112 million for the right to sell beer and advertise. I see lawsuits coming.

Is there even any use for Budweiser to try suing anyone though?

I am not at all familiar with the legal system in Qatar, but considering that Qatar has hardly a democracy, it seems unlikely to me that any compensation can be sought as a breach to the sponsorship contracts.

On a different note, I watched parts of the friendly (and not just the highlights) between Canada and Japan, and it was interesting how things turned out. Canada was playing better than I was expecting, and we utilized our advantage in physical size and speed. Japan was playing more poorly than I was expecting them to, but they had better technique and organization.

What is surprising is Belgium's lost against Egypt today. I haven't watched the game yet, but Egypt isn't exactly a soccer powerhouse. So if Belgium is playing poorly, we might just have a chance to eek out a 2nd place group finish, and make it to the elimination round?

Like the article above said, if Canada even scores 1 single goal that's an improvement on anything we've done haha!

Won't be watching, but hope Canada can keep improving its foothold.
