Talked to a friend, so verbal confirmation is enough now with ICBC and you don't need to physically sign anymore. Part 1 of this saga is now over, now I need to find a job first before buying a new car, and also curious and going to keep track of where the car ends up.

We didn't need to sign any forms

I still have the second key. Car got towed to New West this morning, my BMW app notified me of multiple errors with the car when they reconnected the battery and the car re-established it's connection.

I'm curious if it's gonna get rebuilt or gonna get sent to a junk yard. Everytime they connect up the car I'll get notified.

Were you happy with the amount? Was there any negotiation?

EvoFire 12-18-2025 09:05 AM

No negotiations we were happy with their first offer. We basically drove the car for free for 17 months minus the amount I paid for installing the hitch and doing ceramic coat.

Could we have gotten a bit more? Probably could have gotten an extra $1000 for the hitch but wife already agreed to the amount and I'm like let's not open the can of worms. There's always the chance of them lowering the payout.

So what happened with the wheels? What was the estimated cost for repairs?

Badhobz 12-18-2025 10:18 AM

Used cars are taking off as most people cant afford new cars.

Never got the estimate for repairs.

I was at BMW shopping for a new car before I got news that I was getting laid off, and my sales said the car is guaranteed a writeoff because the laser headlights are backordered for over a year. Basically break a headlight and the car is gone.

Officially the car is signed off to them cause we got the payout and everything. We still have the LA 21" wheels as the car has winters on it right now with LA style 20" wheels.

The wheels would be for sale when 1) I am confident ICBC isn't going to come asking for them, and 2) we aren't getting another X5.

Are you telling me that if any X5 owner had simply gotten into an accident where they only broke the headlight, the car would likely need to be written off because there isn't a replacement part available?

That just sounds insane...

JDMDreams 12-18-2025 12:58 PM

Isn't that how new cars are? I was so surprised when icbc said they were willing to import JDM bumpers and headlights from Japan and my car was still clean title:fulloffuck:

Only those with the lasers. BMW later sobered up and discontinued the lasers in for the LCI X5s.

RabidRat 12-18-2025 01:29 PM

What's it like, using laser headlights? Is it just brighter and/or sharper cutoffs, or there's some behavioral component to it?

Nothing, no difference at all it's just a visual gimmick as the headlights have blue accents.

On the BMW lasers, the low beams are still regular ass LEDs, it's the high beams are are lasers, with that being said, the laser lights are SUPPOSED to provide a huge boost in light output and throw (double the range), in Europe. DOT doesn't allow us to have nice things and NA lasers have their power reduced and it's no different from regular LED headlights.

That sounds like the case. Having the car sit around is just a liability for ICBC so they just write it off. A ton of Teslas got written off for that reason a few years ago because they couldn't get parts.

As a consumer, do you want to have no car and your money tied up for 8 months to a year in a car you can't drive? Do you want to be stuck in a Kia rental if you were driving a BMW otherwise? Even if you drove a Rav4, the way the classing works you'd at best get something like a Kona sized midget which is hardly big enough if you need the size of the Rav4.

Night vision also got discontinued for a bit but is making a comeback for 2025+

JDMDreams 12-18-2025 09:39 PM

Is night vision useful? But then you are then looking at the screen instead of the road unless it's hud

yray 12-19-2025 12:14 AM

you can use it to see through clothes

In Seattle and interior BC yea - lots of animals.
You’ll hear a warning and flash if it spots an animal or pedestrian about to cross your path like you would with pre collision braking.
