Great thread. I need to rant.

So my kid brother (23) is about to graduate and has been having trouble finding a job or even an internship. I've set him up with my colleagues with industry, one of them being RZD, who said he's cooked. That's fine, standards are diff out in NYC. I've suggested people he should talk to and leverage my network, cause at least they'll give him the time of day, he didn't do that. Any of it.

I set up a volunteer opportunity for him at the upcoming WebSummit Vancouver conference, said to be the "Olympics of Tech" and was previously known as Collision in Toronto. I'm thinking, he'll volunteer one or two days, and he gets the next day to go roam, explore MasterClasses, network, go to after party events, etc. In my opinion - it's a fantastic opportunity to connect with people who can make or suggest hiring decisions, at least to get the foot in the door.

Kid goes like "Is there food?". I say no, and he looks turned off from it. (wtf u think I'm gonna feed you when I need you to volunteer? There's no paid food for me either.) Then I feed in the above opportunities line and his gf that's visiting joins in on the convo - i'm pretty pissed off at this point. Like I'm handing you an opportunity and you don't jump on it? Sit the fuck down. Anyway, he says, idk ask her if it's worth it. And I tell her briefly what it's about and she says "you should do it" (no shit dumb fuck - also why even ask her). And I go like, I'm giving you an opportunity to do all this stuff. It's a $700 ticket, of course you're going to have to work for it. And he's like I could care less if it was $1000. At this point, I'm fucking livid.

I end the conversation at - I'm not going to make connections for you (set up meetings) or hand you a silver platter (I don't have that kind of pull). What I can do is create the opportunities to facilitate it, it's up to you if you want to take or not. If you don't want to do it, fine, whatever. I'm just trying to help you out.

No fucking wonder everyone hates hiring Gen Z's. No wonder everyone else globally think NA's are lazy and entitled. Stupid dumb ass kids.

Razor Ramon HG 05-16-2025 04:03 AM

I have a Gen Z that's been working under me for the last year and a half.

I fucking hate him.

Badhobz 05-16-2025 04:58 AM

Dem girls are hot though…. And stupid…

The problem is your brother and this entire generation hasnt suffered in any meaningful way. Sure covid fucked them up and they’ll never be able to buy a house, but that’s not true suffering. True suffering is working for a despot like me.

Without suffering, you don’t know the value of hard work. Without suffering you don’t need a reason to improve your lot in life.

Since you can’t physically beat your kids anymore. Parents also don’t troll their kids enough. They are too emotionally weak.

bcrdukes 05-16-2025 05:38 AM

Gen Z is trash. Plain and simple.

Interesting how this thread has taken off. :lol

I asked RZD for background of their meet up in NYC. Big s/o to RZD tho, I was worried about my brother's safety and stuff so I asked him to show my brother around (without know he was there with his now gf lol)

Anyway the BG is that my brother wants to go to the US and make money. And RZD suggested some projects that he should do, as my brother is not up to par to US candidates.

FFS doesn't sound like my brother took those suggestions, which is annoying as RZD is a highly qualified individual. Not only does it make me look like shit, it's evident that he's just a dumb kid who is stubborn and refuses to take sound advice (lol describing myself a bit here too runs in the family I guess)

I don't see how he can get a job, let alone a US job, without having internship experience. If he's already having a tough time getting internships, I don't see why he's not willing to jump.

Fucking nepotism eh. I have plenty of other candidates who would jump at an opportunity like this, just to be around and make an impression on attendees, in hopes for something. Hell one actually got a job for a US company recently - my buddy hired this brown guy. He works so damn hard, goes to every event, helps out wherever he can. Feels bad for him because everyone else in his race that immigrated here are low quality individuals so of course, if we can, we'll hook him up with a job.

western kids are weak nowadays

buddy guys and buddy girls will all surpass them because they know suffering. They don't mind shacking up 20 to a room, its still better than making bricks in the backreach of India for 2 cents per brick.

we used to be hungry and willing to do hard labor. now if you so much as make me walk more than 20 paces to a bathroom, I'm going to call HR and have them install a disability washroom closer to my office. how dare you make me walk, IM FAT!

INCLUSION MOTHERFUCKERS!!!! INCLUSION !!!!!! i yell this out at every board meeting and then leave and go oppress some minorities

EvoFire 05-16-2025 07:32 AM

I think your brother is just one bad apple. There's lots of hard working kids. On my team at Amazon we had two interns convert to permanent. One ended up leaving for family reasons (mom was hospitalized and needed to provide care, which sucks for her career). The other one is a go getter who's still here, I'm not a fan of some of her work but she's still here and she works hard.

The reality is, in tech, you aren't getting in the door without having done coop during school or willing to put in the time to do an internship. It was like that when I started in 2012, and it's only gotten worst.

It will continue to get worse as projects in general are too complex and budgets too tight for teams/companies to give juniors a chance.
AI has gotten good enough to replace a lot of internship level work, which makes it less likely for companies to hire interns and juniors, most positions are going to be for intermediate or up.

The short sighted-ness of the industry to not bring up the next crop of developers is not lost on me, but that's a whole other can of worms.

so true... why do all brown guys talk on the phone 24/7?? even during work whenever they can get away with it. our office cleaners used to do it, cab drivers do it, it's just part of their culture for some reason.
for me text messaging becoming mainstream was the best thing ever.. you can always get your point across and you can respond when it's convenient. i havent wanted to chat for 6 hours since i was in highschool macking on chicks lol

eyah i don't get this either.. don't really agree with the text but i have seen so many uber drivers / taxi drivers to drive me to the airport and entire time talking... what is there to talk about????

i mean if it was my BFF but danggggg

bcrdukes 05-16-2025 09:17 AM

It's purely a cultural thing.

I remember taking the bus from Montreal to Toronto once and the guy who sat behind me was on the phone the entire duration of the trip. 6 freakin' hours man!

Edit: I just asked an Indian colleague. His reply was, "Time wasting is an art. Indians are good at it."

EvoFire 05-16-2025 09:22 AM

There's that saying in Cantonese 如果你唔講野, 你會口臭 :lol

noclue 05-16-2025 09:57 AM

Anyone grew up in richmond as a non-chinese or a cbc that cant speak mandarin/cantonese? Did you get ostracized in high school or was there enough diversity in the student body to get along. Im wondering whats it like growing up where an ethnic minority is the majority of the population.

My high school + ubc the fobs tend to stick to themselves and the westernized ones mingle with other ethnicities.

bruh, I got a patient right now who has been non-stop talking out loud (to no one in particular) going on 3 hours. Just a jumbled mess of topics including but not limited to: China, Mexicans in Canada getting emergency healthcare, conspiracy theories etc.

I have no idea how anyone can go on talking this long with almost zero breaks in between topics. Just constant, verbal diarrhea that every single one of us has had to tune out all morning

Yes, that sounds about right. I'm finding a lot of Asian aunties and uncles are doing the same with their story telling on WeChat.

This is me. I grew up in Richmond. I'm CBC, but there are white people more Asian than me. Surprisingly, despite there only being a small grouping (think 5 people) in a sea of Chinese people, it wasn't that bad. For ref, I'm describing RHS at at lunch when everyone is in the halls, you can literally see the non-asian folks in the crowd of asian faces.

Never really did got ostracized - I was friends with everybody. Well except for the FOBs, I didn't talk to those people lol.

bcrdukes 05-16-2025 11:49 AM

As a car enthusiast, I care and feel the pain. But that's not the purpose of this thread. :okay:

I find fobs are hard to relate to and to socialize with.

Badhobz 05-16-2025 12:18 PM

I came over from Alberta as banana as they come. Richmond is the reason I even bothered learning Cantonese. To my surprise, there were quite a few Asians I knew who grew up here and didn't speak a word of their own language. I thought that was odd considering the demographics here. Me coming from white af surroundings, there was no reason for me to bother learning my language. But here? I was suddenly surrounded by people who all spoke in their own language so I had to learn or feel left out.
