I went once 2 or 3 years ago and had a great experience. For my one time there it was worth it but I haven't gone back since so not sure if they've kept up or not.

Side note I went to June on Cambie st twice in the past few weeks. One of the current hyped places and not bad. First go had highs and lows. Went again last night because of a birthday and tried dishes I didn't get the first time and it was way better. That said, don't get the signature pasta dish though it's a joke.

Everything to do with the monarchy is -gross-

Both can be true. Monarchy represents horrid historical atrocities even though the current occupant did not commit any of them.

The US system is flawed and is not superior to Parliamentary Democracy in any way as it has produced a similar level of carnage around the world and the current wannabe dictator.

Has anyone tried the Michelin star Peking duck one on Cambie, near City Hall? They have a lunch for 2 that I've been wanting to.

Badhobz 05-27-2025 07:46 AM

^Its alright. a bit overrated for 150 bucks a duck. They do come slice it for you and its a nice atmosphere but i find the slices a bit too thick for my liking. Maybe you can ask them to thin it up, but yeah a bit overrated.

whitev70r 05-27-2025 07:47 AM

^ can you go ghetto and ask for the bone of the duck in a bag to take home?

Badhobz 05-27-2025 07:51 AM

probably... they are chinese after all. they'll give you their daughters virginity if you pay enough.

I went before they got their "award" and food wise it was ok at best. The only thing memorable that night was the service. Duck wise I thought Chang An was better.

white70r aka white AudiA3 - Are you inviting any of us to your Peking duck adventure?

Huh mine was the opposite, I thought quanjude was better than chang an. The duck was the closest to my favorite duck place I tried in beijing, da dong.

unit 05-27-2025 11:19 AM

da dong??

bcrdukes 05-27-2025 11:23 AM

Badhobz 05-27-2025 11:27 AM

I've been a few times.
1) it's Peiking duck. it's NOT the typical chinese hong kong style where you ONLY get the skin
b) they freaking slice it with so much meat in it.
2) you will get the neck pieces and you're suppose to dip it with sugar.

The bone part is a bit of a hit or miss. I lvoe it when they deep fry it. Other think it's meh.

The service you get there is really really top notch. From a Chinese place, you are definitely getting the service and decor. Not really ideal for the duck if you're ONLY going / judging that.

spoon.ek9 05-28-2025 06:50 AM

craving some duck now you bastards. it's not even 8am yet.

duck skin/meat, sweet sauce, some cucumber and a sliver of green onion plus the wrapper :sweetjesus:

This should go in the frugal thread but T&T has a ghetto frozen (not the ones in the hot food area, although they have that for like $30) Peking duck kit, good portion of duck (air fry it to get a bit of crisp), sauce, and some wraps. When on sale, it's like $9 !! Worth the $9 and more, might satisfy the late night craving but obviously, it isn't Michelin Star.

Came back from Montreal and everything I heard about it is true

Shit roads
Lots of construction
Shit traffic
Race car like drivers on the highways
Weird traffic configurations
Rude people
Slooooow service at restaurants
HUMIDITY

Now the pros:

Not a sleepy town
Lots to see and do
Old architecture (hence the construction)
Food choices and overall quality (despite the slow service)
Not enough time in the day to explore (I was there for 6 nights)

Also did the drive to Quebec. Other than a huge truck convoy (not sure what it was about), the drive is pretty nice considering the distance.

Old Quebec was fantastic and worth it for first timers. Lots of photo ops and varying cuisine and it was 30 degrees when I was there and it was just perfect (despite the humidity). People were a bit nicer there than Montreal.

Lots of Asians were gathering around some random red door (including my gf). I don't know why till I found it was part of a scene in some K-Slop series. WOW A RED DOOR!

I'd go again but not anytime soon. The Cathedrals are just spectacular inside. We've defiinitely fallen in contemporary design language by comparison.

noclue actually nails it. Da Dong is also my favorite among all the Peking Ducks in Beijing and it's the go-to place for many of my Beijing-native friends.

Quanjude is ok. But the problem with them outside of China is that they tried to become this fine-dining thing that I don't think it goes well with the original Peking duck. Just bring me the damn duck, and the duck fried rice and soup like QJD in Beijing. That's all I ask for when it comes to Peking duck

I have been to QJD Vancouver twice, while the flavour was ok, I think both instances the food came out colder than what I'd have preferred. If I'm doing to guess, it's they took too long to plate everything fancy. But other than that, the service was good and it's like a more pretentious Chinese food experience.

Can't comment on the price though as I was invited there both occasions.

Once you’ve been in one fancy church, they are all the same

Honorable mention to that Sistine chapel though that was prettt incredible

Convoy could be for the ostriches. They are doing the convoy right now.
