Damn, that looks awesome! Are those your sets, or your buddy’s son’s?

red kryptonite 09-21-2025 11:21 PM

they're his. some were gifted from me over the years.

Badhobz 09-22-2025 05:54 AM

this is for his son!? how old is the kid? the kid wont appreciate this sort of attention to detail, or display, he just wanna take them down and play with them.

When i was a wee little hobz, i used to take shit apart, rebuild them into my own grand designs.... making mechs and stuff cuz i really wanted to play mechwarrior 2, but didnt have a PC capable of running such a thing.

red kryptonite 09-22-2025 07:25 AM

hes 10, starting to outgrow "playing" with toys. its time to teach him how to appreciate the art of collecting/displaying.

Badhobz 09-22-2025 07:38 AM

oh at 10's hes probably getting into video games more and more. soon these will just collect dust.

68style 09-22-2025 08:15 AM

That's a hell of a lot of work even for 2 people to pull off in 6 hours man wow

GLOW 09-22-2025 08:31 AM

ya my boys are in to minecraft and sort of outgrew lego.
my younger teen still plays with lego.

speaking of mechwarrior, i got a MOC maurader II aka officer battle pod if you watched robotech (in NA, aka macross) growing up, a few months back.

i just got him to build it for me and helped for complex pieces (or if 1 or 2 pieces were missing b/c aliexpress LOL)

waiting for aliexpress soundwave to drop in price lol

It wasn’t too bad. Its not like it was fully disassembled. Just a lot was fell apart from playing and thrown into a bin. But yea a lot of work nonetheless.

Badhobz 09-22-2025 11:03 AM

How the hell is pokey man still around. That shit was from my childhood…. I don’t see the appeal

roastpuff 09-22-2025 11:08 AM

Clearly you don't know the usefulness of a Vaporeon.

To be fair, when I was a kid I built my lego kits once and put them on display immediately. Never messed with them afterwards lol. but then, I recognize that I'm sort of OCD and wasn't like most kids my age.

PS: my cunt of a sister destroyed my entire collection one day by knocking down the shelf on top of my desk where they were all being displayed. she knew how much it meant to me to keep them mint.

Badhobz 09-22-2025 04:22 PM

wow! You were/are/am a pretty special kid. I thought the whole point of building lego was to add stuff and unleash your inner creativity.

When i was a little retard, I only built them up 1 time. I immediately went about taking them apart, adding things, etc. Especially when it came to my pirate ship, I wanted them to float. The old LEGO sets never floated. i was very disappointed when i put my pirate ship into the bathtub and it sank instantly.

Destroyed in faith in humanity.

For the space sets, i had this weird obsession where i had to fill the cockpit with bricks to make them air tight... bothered the shit out of little 7-8 year old me that i could reach in with my finger and touch the minifig.. HOW IS HE SUPPOSED TO FLY IF IT'S NOT SEALED STUPID!??!?!?!?!

I was a weird little boy.

spoon.ek9 09-22-2025 04:26 PM

I remember having a lego boat of some kind too. Pretty sure that didn't float very well either :suspicious:

Literally why I went into engineering!!

We are similar retards. I also took them apart immediately afterwards, messed around with them, and then moved on to free-building something else (usually some kind of spaceship type thing). I liked having to improvise when I didn't have the obvious / enough pieces to meet my needs. I also liked smashing stuff into them, and then reinforcing them for better resilience the next time.

spoon.ek9 09-23-2025 02:35 PM

In grade 4 I built a medieval castle of my own design that could swing open from the middle so you could see inside. Some of my classmates accused me of lying because they didn't believe I built it myself. Slow motherfuckers.

RabidRat 09-23-2025 02:39 PM

Do you guys remember the Lego Digital Designer tool? It let you design your own lego kits and box. The CAD software generated instruction booklets based on your build order.

Then you ordered it and it showed up as a legit looking lego kit!

I threw this together around 2010:

doesnt that get impossible to sort and find the pieces when its time to rebuild it, especially for the big kits?

I would take it apart completely. Makes storing a lot easier than if it was thrown into a bin.

I had/have the same pirate ship, the hull is multiple pieces so it won't float. The one I have that does float is the 4011 Cabin Cruiser from 1991.

The hull is one huge piece and it's hollow (?)

I did that once with my big Tie Fighter, so all the pieces were grey and black. It took a loooooot longer to build it the second time. Ideally you want to disassemble it properly and split the pieces into bags in the same sections that the instructions are split so it's easier.

Oh my fuck. I HAD THIS!! I used it as a base for a ton of armored ship builds, and played with it lots in the bath tub.

Holy shit, that's nostalgic as hell.

And yeah I think it was hollow. It bubbled from those holes when you put it under the water haha.

Badhobz 09-23-2025 07:47 PM

What’s beautiful Lego boat! How come mine wasn’t like that !!!! Fucking parents got me the only boats that would sink and therefore ruined my faith in humanity.

spoon.ek9 09-23-2025 07:52 PM

I think the inner piece comes off so you can have just the hull with no deck.

thats next level crazy too!! just take it apart and throw it into ziplock bags. thats future you's problem.

What a coincidence, I was in Richmond back in August and took a box of Lego my mom said was mine but that my sisters kids had been into… I’ve spent the last month on and off trying to remember what sets I used to have and then finding instructions online to piece them back together. Mostly space sets and a couple of early 80’s city sets.
