Sup RS,

So recently I started to collect diecast models.. It started off with me picking up a few cars when I was shopping at Costco (Maisto). Grabbed a white Nissan GTR today actually.

However, after looking at a few Autoarts's I don't think I can continue with the Maisto quality. I'm really looking to collect all the Japanese sports car from my childhood (NSX, RX-7, Fairlady, Supra, MR2, etc..).
A few questions:

1. Is Autoart the top diecast makers?

2. Any other brands I should consider? I'm familiar with (so far) Maisto, Hot Wheels, Burago, Autoart, Kyosho and Motor Max

3. Autoart and Kyosho seem very similiar.. Is there a definitive answer which one is actually better or is this a personal preference?

4. I'm assuming ebay, amazon are the best places to buy? Can't imagine there being a large enough demand for a local store to sell at decent price

5. Finally, for you guys that are serious collectors, do you take them out of the box?

I'm looking for my XMAS present already.. A NSX-R. Actually, any NSX lol

I used to have a crap ton of these back when I was about 8-13ish. But being young and stupid, I ended up breaking the wheels off a lot of them because I was a dumbass and too young to appreciate them. Now that I'm older and have broken my fair share of wheels, I don't have as much, but I do take better care of the few that I have. I've had everything you listed except Kyosho and Motor Max, and yes Autoart diecasts are the most detailed imo. I got a lot of mine from Hong Kong, and a few from places like Zellers and Toys R Us. I don't have any pictures of my current collection, but this is one of the latest and probably my favourite addition:

I'd say some Kyosho's (such as the r32) are actually better than AutoArt's rendition. Also, you shouldn't stay away from Maisto as some of their models are really good.

1: I would say Autoart would be the upper mid level in. The higher ups would be CMC and BBR

2: With 1/18 prices increasing so much I actually started with 1/43. I find it having a way bigger selection of cars I like more.

4: You can always check out Wilkinson's by Ontario and Broadway. I personally usually buy from Hong Kong and just bring them back myself.

5: I would only take them outta the box if I was to put them on display in a clear box.

That's kind of a difficult question to answer... it was the only option for me to get probably one of my favourite cars ever so yah I felt like it was... that said, I got my friend to buy it for me from Tokyo when she was coming to visit me and it was about $150 when it was all said and done! The details and pop-up spoiler and whatnot are very nice... the Pagani has more features on it for sure though.

Online is definitely the way to go for buying diecasts these days. Much better selection than local and it's not that hard to find the one you want for a decent price. I have tons of cars ranging from 1/64 to 1/18. Some really expensive ones I leave in the package or if I really like the car, I buy another one to open. I used to buy everything back in the day but due to lack of space, I mainly focus on my Mitsubishi collection now:

Model kits are really nice from Tamiya... sometimes they sell ones that are master crafted by Tamiya modellers too but those are pretty damn expensive! This one looks nice... on ebay it's as low as $39 that's cheap for Tamiya...

I used to collect diecast cars for a while. Still have some Hot Wheels, but for the most part I just usually picked up Jada 1:18 from Wal-Mart whenever I'm shopping. They're cheap and still look pretty cool. Most are currently stored but I do have a couple of neat old school VW's out on display still (Dubcity series).

Would like to pick up a couple of Tamiya models at some point, though.

I saw 2 or 3 red s2000 maisto ones at the Costco in downtown Vancouver. Costco had light blue/silverish and blue M5's, Audi RS4/S4 Cabriolet, Beetle, one red R35 Skyline, 1 black Mustang, and one older classic car.

Ebbro 1:24 scale NSX-R is about as good as it can get man... I've got one it's the carpet interior and full suspension done up... steering...

For 1:18 Autoarts there are: black DC5, black 2nd gen Viper roadster, 2 rally cars, and very few others (touring racecar-type) for around $100 each and the rest were repackaged 1:24 Jada muscle cars for $30 each. I think there was also a loose bugeye STI in the front store window displays. I looked over very briefly though.

hot wheels finally released something almost autoart grade detail... although it is autoart price but only slightly cheaper... interior seat had fabric, along with fabric race harness. lots of photo etched screens and various small parts... I was absolutely shocked to find out they made something of this quality! :sweetjesus:

AutoArt is good and probably has the SLS... there's a lot of other highend ones like BBR and LooksSmart and Peako, etc... but they focus on Italian cars mostly. Peako makes some pretty crazy Lexus LF-A models though, but they just started so I've heard of some quality issues on their Pagani line... look beautiful from the pictures I've seen though, real carbon fibre weave and everything.

I like how they came out with multiple styles for the 2002. There was also a tri-color orange one with clear windows and dual colored wheels. The one I have has tinted windows, and the one you have has blue windows, pretty cool.

Take your time choosing your cars... tampo accuracy is hit or miss across different cars (maybe they're are produced on certain assembly machine lines with differently adjusted paint applicators). Doesnt help that the paint process designer chose to apply that much white paint last onto a black painted body.


Well, its a good excuse to drill out the rivets, spray some paint stripping gel, and get painting.

There are plenty of Hot Wheels cars that look great. Good molding, good paint, tampos, etc. The panda AE86 looks really bad, even for a HWs car.

didnt buy this at costco. bought it at another smaller shop in states! the nicer maisto cars are very hard to find at the big chains selling these cars.... usually the smaller shop have the nicer cars.
