Soundy 04-01-2008 10:58 PM

^^Can I come work for you?? :D

So, a buddy who's just getting into photography came down from Yale for a visit this weekend, and we hit the Aquarium to shoot some fish in their barrels :)

Okay, I know it's a three-per-day limit, but it's now tomorrow, and besides I almost never post to this thread, so :P :D ;)

After the Aquarium, we hit Trolls in Horseshoe Bay for lunch (got rained out of taking pics there), then hit Kerrisdale Cameras so buddy could drop about $1600 on new lenses (it's only money, right?), then it was off to the Bloedel Conservatory in QE Park for some more pics. All handheld by available light, which wasn't great because of the overcast day.

Buddy picked himself up a nice new Canon EF-60mm f/2.8 macro lens that day, so I inherited his now-extraneous EF-50mm F/1.8... nice little piece of glass, that! :)

Thanks.. That was shot inside the Vancouver Art Gallery. Nice new toys! I am seriously considering a D300 and a D3...but Sony's upcoming new 24MP full-frame DSLR is intriguing too.

D300 is pretty sweet, all the buttons are reorganized to be alot more convenient. boss added 2 D300 to my collection today :D

Nice camera, but the shot itself shows that nice gear doesn't make the shot :)

Hope you don't mind my criticism.

Setting is nice.

But there's one GLARING item that seems to stick out like a sore thumb: the groom's hair in the face and you can't see his eyes. Could be a rushed shot, could be a detail that was overlooked....I don't know the logistics that went into that shot, but it seems like it is something that could have been easily taken care of at the time.

No it isn't. The photosites of the H3 are much bigger, so you get much better tonal range and dynamic range. I played with a 25MP(?) Phase One back on a Mamiya RZ67 and the difference is noticable on the Eizo monitor we used.

No, I don't mind...that is the groom's stye. The shot wasn't rushed, but I wasn't about to pose them and style them...they're just being themselves. They liked the shot, that's all that matters. I posted the camera & lens combo because I thought people would question why I photoshopped it to get the glow. I didn't...it's a quality of the Leica glass.

So a buddy and I did a little shooting around Prospect Point yesterday... wandered up onto the Lions Gate Bridge for some shots, just in time to watch two separate accidents happen - one quick-stop rear-ender at the south end of the bridge, and another reaction rear-ender up at the crest of the bridge. Ambulance came... and then fire trucks from both sides. After all was confirmed okay, the fire engines each needed to make, oh, about an 8-point turn to get headed back the right direction. It was impressive to watch...

Needless to say traffic was a nightmare for the rest of the afternoon...
