what does the octopus card do?

It's a smartchip-loaded card, which connects to an account which you can load up with money. Basically replaces cash in a lot of instances in Hong Kong with a card that you just pass over a sensor to pay for stuff. Mostly used in public transit, but you can pay for stuff at 7-11s and McD's too.
