The Equalizer 8/10 - Everything you would expect it to be. Denzel delivers as THAT character.

Into The Storm 6/10 - if you go into it thinking that it's a B-movie with pretty special effects you should enjoy it. If you're thinking it's Twister 2 you will be disappointed.

StylinRed 05-12-2015 02:18 AM

Ex Machina 8/10

(other trailers show waaaaaay too much of the film, this does too kind of)

It was a pretty good sci-fi flick, it's not an action movie like some of the trailers try to lead you into thinking

you don't need to see it in theatres as you wouldnt be missing anything from the experience imo

it wasn't bad and it wasn't great, the praise for it makes me think 'overrated'

hmm...as i type im going over it again in my head, and...it was pretty good (knocked it up from 7/10 to 8/10)

heard the Weinsteins were cutting 20mins out to make it less talk and more action

but guess i was wrong

Will Ferrell was epically hilarious. Kevin Hart delivers as well.

Mad Max

pure awesome, missed the first 5 minutes? got in there 1 min before it splashed "MAD MAX" on screen as Tom Hardy was doing a voice over

not much dialogue/story yet what's there is wonderful and works, this has to be seen on a big screen, the visuals are just fantastic

Max takes a backseat really through the movie, it was more Charlize Theron but that's not a knock to the film, it was fantastic!

Marvel & Stallone should take note on how to make a real action film

10/10 don't think it would be a movie that I would watch again and again though

Mad Max
10/10

I saw it on Friday with the wife. It was a non-stop ride of insanity. The post-apocalyptic version of the war drum was the cherry on top. We were completely blown away by it. So, we brought her sister and her sister's husband for a Saturday matinee. Seeing it a second time gave some clarity to scenes that seemed to whip by the first time.

Android = male robot, Gynoid = female. So you want a male robot to dance with? :troll:

Anyway I watched it last night, so Ex Machina = 7/10 it was fine. Highly overrated

Focus 6/10 - It wasn't much more than a pitch movie for that blonde, attempting to make her the next big female star.

MAD MAX 10/10

THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE AN ACTION MOVIE.

For a while I wondered if I was just never going to be able to enjoy action movies ever again. Every time I try, I get more and more jaded by how poorly they're mad. Shit plot lines that do nothing but give an excuse to show shitty CGI for 90 minutes at a time, broken up by dull exposition scenes with poor acting. I rarely care about any of the characters, because it feels like you know they are just going to come out fine in the end, with no threat to interrupt their pre-determined arc. There's no reason to care about Iron Man or Optimus Prime, because they're just going to do what they do - have a bunch of lame CGI fights against stuff that isn't there, in a world that is nothing but a backdrop to more CGI fights.

THIS MOVIE IS NOT LIKE THAT.

I can't believe how well constructed the world is. With no introduction at all (if I ever watched the original, I can't remember), you're thrown into what feels like a developed world that actually exists. There's no opening scroll of text telling you who is who, the characters are all just there. You know who they are just by watching them interact with each other. The plot line is thin, and that is a GOOD thing. We aren't worried about some macguffin that will destroy the world, it's just some evil tyrant that needs to be dealt with. The basic plotline has a very human feel to it, and was plenty to give the characters their motivations.

A thin plot line like this works because the ACTION IS ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD. There were two times where I had to remind myself to breathe. Because everyone is interacting with things that look like real objects - vehicles and weapons - and presumably it uses a lot of practical effects (if not, they're doing a damn good job of disguising CGI) it doesn't just looks like a silly cartoon. You're not watching a fake archer shoot arrows at fake robots flying around a fake skyline around fake buildings. Instead you have a dude fighting another dude on top of a moving truck, and shooting dudes in the face. Blood and guts go flying - not uncanny valley-shattering splashes of red mist.

And the world itself... Every new scene introduces a visual spectacle that brought a smile to my face every time. Each different faction had their own unique look and method of warfare. It has just the right amount of b-movie cheese to give it that fun comic feel, while maintaining an obviously bleak post-apocalyptic feel. Each new boss villain is introduced with his own fanfare, giving a whacky one-liner just to add a bit of flavour.

Finally, the action scenes are long, and chaotic. A lot is happening, but I never once found it difficult to follow. I have NO idea how the director managed this. It's just bat-shit insane, but you know exactly what is happening!

This is easily the best action movie I've seen in a very long time. Edit: I just realized that the last time I felt this way about an action movie was probably The Matrix. This movie was a masterpiece.

Ex Machina- I get what they were trying to do. But, it was boring as shit!!

Thanks for the thorough review. I went straight to Elements to watch it. Doesn't seem like a big hit in HK with minimal marketing but what a crazy ride. Loved it and surprisingly so did my wife.

Nice that's where I went too. I heard cinema 6 with the Atmos sound was amazing and it was! It's really a pain in the ass to get to though, so I'll only be going for big action movies.

I went with my wife and partway through I was wondering if it was too much for her. But she really liked it too! The 3D was not in the way for the most part, with the exception of the opening cave chase scene (way too choppy at 12 fps or whatever it ends up being) and another scene later on.

Mad Max 10/10 - Can't say anything that hasn't already been said. Let me say I've been waiting for this movie for a long time...it's been 10 years coming. I'm glad to say as a film it stands on it's own but has the 80s excess that pays homage to the originals. Charlize Therone does an amazing job with the little dialogue she has and the movie is as much about her as it is for Max. Junkie XL's score suited the movie perfectly. Several of my friends have seen it twice already because it's just that fun of ride. It's one of the few movies I plan on buying in Blue Ray. If you haven't seen it already go now!
