well yea, no one gonna take the time to slice up some chuck and cook to rare i guess for each order. Although the way more people are i'd think they'd prefer well-done to rare anyways :/

funny how in the states it seems to be a common thing to ask how you'd like your burger cooked

Bao Down

7/10

Was interesting.. I liked the texture of the baos though. But its nothing special to me really. I tried YVR, Bao Chicka Bao Bao, kimchi fries and japamayo fries.

Japamayo fries were weird. sauce tasted like really savoury curry. Fries itself were good. Better than most restaurants I've eaten at

Overall it was good but not amazing. Probably won't go back for a while

Mr.Red Cafe

place was hyped big time from what i was told by some people and seeing things on instagram etc.

Damn, what a let down lol.. I know they try to promote northern style viet food but i found it all very bland and odd tasting. Not that i am viet nor an expert on the food but i've probably eaten at 100+ different viet places over my life, and this was a fall flat for sure.

I had the typical pho brisket and rare beef noodles, GF had the beef stew, and i had the meatball sandwhich. My soup was def the low point of the food, GF's beef stew was pretty tasty and the stewing beef was super tender albeit very fatty. Broth was good but nothing exceptional from the seemingly raving reviews i had been told

meatball sandwhich is served just with the french roll and the meatball sitting in a sauce it's presumabely cooked in, was very good but hard to mess up a meatball in a stewing broth and some fresh french bread.

When we showed up we waited about 10 minutes, by the itme we left people were probably waiting about 25-30. I wouldnt wait 5 if i was going to go back, esepcially with the options in the area.

5/10

Sushi Coen on burrard at drake 8.5/10

Recently opened family run sushi place, been a couple times and have been really impressed with the food quality (especially for the price). Good service, more creative than just standard sushi, and good presentation. New favourite go to for non-high end sushi.

Just got back from a foodie trip in San Francisco

The French Laundry 9/10
Lived up to the hype, met chef Keller, really wish I had gotten the wagyu supplement, tried a bite of a friends and it was amazing.

Kusakabe in San Francisco
9/10, blows every sushi joint in Vancouver out of the water.
Tamago still better at Octopus Garden though

Campton Place in San Francisco 9/10
Fine dining Indian food, better than Vijs
Impeccable service and food was amazing.
At $85pp for 5 course lunch, it was great value too.

The Village Pub in Woodside California 7/10
Ambiance and service was great.
Food was good but nothing amazing.
The turnip soup was very good
Duck confit... I've had better else where.

Solbar at the Solage in Calistoga Ca
Great resort, relaxing patio and great service.
Food was just okay, nothing memorable, great presentation.
Wished I had tried their fish Taco though, since that was one of their signature dishes.

Slanted Door, San Francisco Ca 5/10
Place to be seen, and great view of the bay bridge.
Pork belly and rice noodle dish was very good
The rest was not very good at all.
Their signature dish, the shaking beef, tasted like overcooked steak bites.

i wouldn't say 5/10 but for a asian fusion place and the view, it's pretty cute place to hang for San Fran. Is it that bad, not really. Could it be better compared to Van.. sure. but not a 5/10

I've only been once, but the thing is I don't think their pho or banh mi is what they are known for.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, and perhaps spoiled with French laundry and kusakabe the two nights before hand
But their signature dish was over cooked steak bites, I remember having better shaking beef at an Asian fusion resturant at the Ramada hotel SeaTac.
The view was good, but the food for the priced paid wasn't.

Tacofino Hastings location

Me and the GF used to frequent it when it first opened, had great food for the price and somewhat "different/innovative" flavours

Went there on Saturday first time in a few months, place has fallen off big time. Right off the bat the waitress gives a spiel about basically how X ingredient is no longer used and now it's Y ingredient. I believe one change was flank steak tacos are now a grilling steak or some shit, essentially saying we aren't using as good as ingredients as listed in the menu anymore.

Portion size was way down, the key lime vaso which was kind of their calling card dessert was wayyy shittier than before, etc.

Honestly I get you're like a busy hipster place but fuck, increase prices rather than cutting the quality of your food if that's the case. Sure it doesn't make economic sense in the eyes of the business perhaps, but I won't go back he way the food is being served now.

6/10 because the tater tots were still killer lol

6793026 07-20-2015 08:45 AM

^ it's not uncommon. 1st 3 months of opening all the way to the 9 mth mark quality is good but it goes down hill.

where would be a good taco place to go now?

westopher 07-20-2015 10:01 AM

I thought tacofino was a bit of a crock of shit already. Their tacos always tasted good, but value was never there. Now it sounds like it has neither. I'll keep seeing my friends at La taqueria when I want quality. If I feel like fat guy fried shit tacos to drown in hot sauce I'll just go to Chronic.

bcrdukes 07-20-2015 01:56 PM

Has anyone done a back-to-back comparison between the Tacofino in Gastown and the one on Hastings & Nanaimo?

I've only ever had the fish tacos @ the Gastown location. While they hit the spot, I feel that they are a tad too expensive so I won't have it frequently. That and I don't believe they are the greatest either.

Hondaracer 07-20-2015 02:15 PM

I've never been to the burrito bar in gas town but from what I've seen on Instagram their burritos look like far better portions than what's being served at the Hastings location

Take Sushi on Hastings in Burnaby. 3/10

One of the worst experiences I have had with Japanese restaurants. Might be a one-time thing, but I feel the need to rate it.

Came in just before the lunch hour rush, ordered a chopped scallop roll and chicken udon.

The chopped scallop roll came in about 10 minutes (expected). I like waiting for all my food before I start eating, so I sit there waiting for the udon. 25 minutes after I originally ordered, the udon finally comes. Keep in mind that this is just before the lunch hour rush, so the restaurant is pretty much empty, but starting to fill up slowly. It should not take 25 minutes for a bowl of noodles.

Anyways, on to the food. When I looked at the chopped scallop roll again, I noticed that 60% of the roll was AVACADO. Okay... That's a bit unsual considering they did not mention that on the menu. I personally hate avacado, so I did not end up enjoying the roll that much. Udon was average, about what you would expect from a Japanese restaurant.

I go up to pay, the bill comes to just over $12 after taxes (I still decided to tip a decent amount, because I don't believe that the servers should have to suffer for the restaurant's mistakes). I give the cashier a $50 bill. She returns me $32.75. I drop $1.75 for tips and start walking out the door. Then it hit me... Wasn't my meal $12? How did it suddenly jump to $17? I go back and ask them how much it was, and reluctantly, the cashier gave me another $5 bill.

Won't be going back again. Gonna drive a bit further up the street and go to Sushi Town instead.

tldr; Food was extremely slow, tasted "meh", and gave me wrong change.

iPee 07-22-2015 12:21 PM

If you guys are looking for a good taco place, give Sal y Limon a try. It's right off kingsway x Fraser by Ba Le.

Funny, I've had worse experiences than that at Sushi Town. Disclosure: I have not been to Take Sushi.

Brunch at Catch 122:

Had the Eggs Benedict with the braised short rib and was really good.

Eggs benny: 9.5/10
Has browns that came with benny: 9.0/10 as it had the deep fried crunch on the outside but still soft on the inside.
Parking is hard to find but I was able to find parking a block away on Abbott street before 0930am.

Chik-fil-A in Lynnwood, WA. I don't care if it's fast food, but the chicken they have is one of the juciest I've had, even better than dare I say it, LA Chicken. Chicken has strong flavor, but the waffle fries they have do need salt. Best fast food chicken ever.

9.5/10

sonick 07-27-2015 08:58 AM

Save on Meats: 8/10

Great burger, juicy flavourful patty. Would've been better if they were able to serve it a bit undercooked, but still great. Poutine was not bad, fries were solid.
