One of the worst experiences I have had with Japanese restaurants. Might be a one-time thing, but I feel the need to rate it.

Came in just before the lunch hour rush, ordered a chopped scallop roll and chicken udon.

The chopped scallop roll came in about 10 minutes (expected). I like waiting for all my food before I start eating, so I sit there waiting for the udon. 25 minutes after I originally ordered, the udon finally comes. Keep in mind that this is just before the lunch hour rush, so the restaurant is pretty much empty, but starting to fill up slowly. It should not take 25 minutes for a bowl of noodles.

Anyways, on to the food. When I looked at the chopped scallop roll again, I noticed that 60% of the roll was AVACADO. Okay... That's a bit unsual considering they did not mention that on the menu. I personally hate avacado, so I did not end up enjoying the roll that much. Udon was average, about what you would expect from a Japanese restaurant.

I go up to pay, the bill comes to just over $12 after taxes (I still decided to tip a decent amount, because I don't believe that the servers should have to suffer for the restaurant's mistakes). I give the cashier a $50 bill. She returns me $32.75. I drop $1.75 for tips and start walking out the door. Then it hit me... Wasn't my meal $12? How did it suddenly jump to $17? I go back and ask them how much it was, and reluctantly, the cashier gave me another $5 bill.

Won't be going back again. Gonna drive a bit further up the street and go to Sushi Town instead.

tldr; Food was extremely slow, tasted "meh", and gave me wrong change.

We all tip differently, I ain't calling you cheap but I'm just more curious if you call a sub 10% tip decent then what do you consider a shitty tip?

$1.75 on a $12.25 bill is a 14% tip.

Just had lunch at Royal Dinette, didn't know what to expect since I thought it was just another Donnelly Group restaurant. I was thoroughly impressed and surprised.

Had the lunch special for $25
Heirloom Tomato, Peach, Gazpacho, Goat Feta, Olive Oil
Potato Gnocchi, Spiced Beef Brisket, Shanghai Choy, Maitake

8/10 food is amazing but a bit pricey for lunch but I didn't pay for it so all good.

Le Crocodile

Service 5/10

Food 7.5/10

bcrdukes 08-08-2015 10:59 AM

Ouch. How did they miss on the service side?

Galactic_Phantom 08-08-2015 12:22 PM

Very inattentive server. Didn't bother talking to us much or explaining the menu/specials. The only times I saw him were dropping menu, taking order, dropping food, dropping bill. Scoffed at us when we didn't order dessert when I told him we had cake waiting at home. Asked the hostess to take a picture for us didn't seem like she wanted to and just took a crappy one and sent us on our way.

bcrdukes 08-08-2015 08:26 PM

Maybe it was his very last day. :D

What is considered a good tip? 15%?

I still give 10% but if service was awesome then I give 15%.

One thing I didnt like was my was said I was supposed to give 15% tip, I am like who told you that? Shes like well thats what the interac machines are set to.

On a side note Bamboo Grove in Richmond, I give 3/10, service was bad and food was mediocre. So when we paid the bill we gave 10% but the cashier said it wasn't enough tip and I was pissed. It wasn't even good service and they had the audacity to request for more, they said at least 15% which I don't mind if it was great service but this was not the case.

I've had poor service at Le Crocodile as well. Rude also inattentive server, won't go back.

The Fat Badger.

Service 2/10
Had a surprise birthday for my cousin. Our waitress seem like she couldn't handle a party of 15. She was just all over the place.

Food 6.5/10
Had the scotched egg and poutine. Poutine fries were bigger than any fries I've had. It look like a whole potato was cut up for that dish. Scotched egg was nice and crispy how its supposed to be but egg was over done.

I don't want to paint a bad picture to everyone in the industry, but service in Vancouver (in general) fucking sucks.

If I were you I would've taken the 10% back and if they tried to say anything tell them to call the cops. Just don't underpay them..*cough cough* E-SPEC...

My frugal girlfriend lately has been taking tips off, sometimes entirely if we get shit service. Maybe it'll send them a message, if not, they can have fun making minimum wage

punkwax 08-10-2015 08:12 AM

I tip 15% for normal service, 10% if below standard and 20% for awesome service.

Went to the Keg last night, no water offered, had to ask for cutlery & share plates.. had 3 different servers in the hour or so we were there. The first guy even brought the bottle of wine out only to realize we didn't have wine glasses either. FailFish

They were not very well organized and normally the service (at least in South Surrey) is pretty decent. I was about to leave 10% until my prime rib came out. It was cooked so perfectly and was so delicious that I forgave the service faults and still left 15% :lol

Spoon 08-10-2015 10:28 AM

^ You sure let them know. :ahwow:

When we reward people for shitty service, what's the incentive to improve. If anything, we're giving them positive reinforcement to continue giving out shit service.

Hondaracer 08-10-2015 11:17 AM

I have no problem leaving zero if the situation justifies it.

Zero sends a message, 10% etc you just look like a cheapskate. And odds are a place where I'm tipping zero, I won't be returning anyways.
