Fuck yeah love pepinos. Good to see all the support in here for good local spots on this page.

Checked out Per Se Social Corner today. Pizza was great and nice appies/cocktails as well. Our server was super cool as well. Good spot.

Had no idea it was across the street from RS’ resident cherry popsicle enthusiast.

westopher 08-31-2021 04:49 PM

I haven’t been across the street from there for a little over 3 years now.

punkwax 08-31-2021 04:50 PM

Oh well shit. PM me your new digs so I can come support please.

Had dinner at Como Taperia - absolutely delicious. Been there 3x and pretty much every dish is great. When they do their paella outdoors it's also delicious and unique.

LOVE Como Taperia for sure... reminds me of barcelona for sure. location is great, tapas are legit, drinks are decent and decor was exactly what I felt when I was in Spain.

Aside from sardine can (now closed), I love it.

punkwax 09-01-2021 06:20 PM

Took the wife to Como Taperia tonight. Delicious!

Thanks for the recommendation.

The wife and I hit Robson for some shopping today. It started pouring rain so we ducked into Joe Fortes for some oysters and a cocktail. My wife has been craving dumplings recently so we asked our server if he knew of a good spot to check out… well, he did:

It did not disappoint. We haven’t enjoyed an atmosphere like that since our Manhattan trip.

Did you ask for the #7? There's a Speakeasy bar behind the restaurant if you ask for the #7.

punkwax 09-06-2021 10:37 AM

The pic is from the speakeasy. We were seated at the bar.

Ordered two #7’s, yep. It’s a meal donation program which is also very cool IMO.

Never heard of that place, looked it on on google maps. The google reviews for that place are spicy!

Also in one of the owners responses, it seems to imply that they just cook premade dumplings from Chinatown.

Nothing wrong with premade dumplings from Chinatown. Probably taste better than any freshly made dumplings by some rando from the kitchen.

westopher 09-06-2021 07:38 PM

Woah those are some spicy reviews. Some are pretty offensive tbh.

Never said anything was wrong with premade dumplings from Chinatown, heck I regularly go buy bags of premade ones for myself even. Always have them on-hand in the freezer.

I was just curious what their dumplings were like as I've never heard of this dumpling place before, and stumbled upon that response from the alleged owner.

BIC_BAWS 09-06-2021 09:43 PM

I've heard the term a lot but what exactly is a speakeasy?

speak·eas·y
/ˈspēkˌēzē/
Learn to pronounce
nounINFORMAL
(during Prohibition) an illicit liquor store or nightclub.

I.e. hipster bar that everybody knows the password to get in but makes patrons feel like they're particularly cool or hip because they can post cool Instagram photos.

Narrow lounge shoutout one of the og Speakeasys

Obsideon 09-08-2021 07:48 PM

I think in this day in age there will never be any more "real" speakeasy's.
I went to some really cool ones that my friend took me to in Anaheim. You had to push a code into a vending machine. But because I was the only Asian in there I was getting weird stares, kinda awkward.

racerman88 09-11-2021 09:28 PM

Took my mom out to lunch at Wang’s Shanghai Cuisine beside LD at Kingsway & Joyce.
Got Siu Lum bow, potstickers, preserved veggies and pork w/noodles in soup and the steamed white buns with condensed milk.
Food came fast and was flavorful.
$35 incl. tip total

Ate at the Birria YVR taco truck at strange fellows brewing yesterday, they make the Birra tacos (sp) and some with the cheese skirts lol. They were really good. The beef inside isn’t overly seasoned etc but it has an understated deliciousness to them even with the cheese skirt lol

Coincidentally I had the Birra at Port Moody brewery last week. Forgot to get the cheese skirt which I heard is game changing. But it was still good.

That truck is good, although I find their actual consommé somewhat lacking.

Hondaracer 09-14-2021 12:47 PM

^ agreed.

Outside of like travel bloggers etc. I’d never really had the birra tacos. I expected this flavour overload of some crazy slow stewed beef with a hearty/salty consommé but it was more like a boulion cube in water. Didn’t really add much dipping the tacos. I feel like even a dash of seasoning salt or somthing on the beef would have woken up the flavours big time.

Great for a food truck at a brewery but I don’t think id seek it out over a mezcaleria or even tacofino

Expresso 09-14-2021 02:15 PM

Kind of felt the cheese was just too much. Might've been better without the skirt.

mikemhg 09-14-2021 02:19 PM

Tacomio has a pretty decent birria, and their consommé is way better. Only their East Van location has the birria though.

Tried Giovane Bacaro last night for our anniversary.
Food was perfect. Great service.
I will say, that it’s a certain type of food that I think is a specific type of person that will appreciate it most. It’s very simple, ingredient driven food that’s prepared with extreme care. If you don’t get excited about a perfect tomato and angry when you see a shitty tomato, you might not be blown away by it. Not to be snobby, but if you are looking for “fancy” it’s not it.
For those that really appreciate good ingredients, you will definitely be blown away.
